Hi there, I am Joanna Have you ever gone to therapy and found it hard to open up because the sessions appear rigid and impersonal, and maybe you felt judged? In my practice is my goal to lead sessions in a non-judgmental way, with the belief that clients are the experts in their own lives. I like to describe my relationship with clients as a relationship among equals. My role in the session is to help you process some of the challenges you are experiencing and offer skills that can help create the change you want to see in your life. My theoretical orientation is dialectical behavioral therapy and I try to hold the balance between acceptance and change, this means accepting that although things might be difficult at this moment we can learn new behaviors so life can be improved. My goal is to help clients increase their overall satisfaction in life and relationships. I am also trained in trauma work to help clients process traumatic experiences.

I use dialectical behavioral skills which aim at helping people learn effective ways of coping with difficult situations and replace ineffective behaviors with effective ones.

First session

In our first session we will cover general legal things and I will ask you general questions to help me understand your history and what brings you to therapy. I will tell you a bit about my self and you will probably tell me a bit about you so we can get to know each other a little better and start building a therapeutic relationship. We will also discuss your goals for therapy and our work together.

Strengths

My biggest strength is my ability to make clients feel understood, help them gain acceptance of things they have no control over, be okay with setting boundaries when needed, and feel good about the changes they want to make.

Ideal clients

My ideal client is one who can be honest with them selves and open to trying new things. A client who is willing to explore challenges, needs, wants, and what type of behaviors keeps them closer or further away from their goals.

Treatment methods

Dialectical Behavior (DBT)

I have used DBT approach to treat and support patients with a variety of problems for about 11 years. I love to use DBT in my sessions because it allows me to keep my sessions client centered through validation and goal setting and provides many skills and interventions to help patients produce the kind of change they want to see in their lives. DBT helps create behavioral and emotional change through skills building.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

Cognitive behavioral Therapy is useful in helping us understand the relationship between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Through cognitive behavioral therapy we can learn to identify unhelpful thought patterns that may create negative emotions, and learn how to restructure these thought so they are more in sync with reality.

After the first session I can say she is very warm and welcoming. There was no judgment or condescension. She seemed to really want to help me and made an effort in listening and engaging with me. I am looking forward to our next session!
