I began serving through Christian ministry and then realized I was even more fulfilled in working more specifically in the wider field of mental health. After getting both master's and a doctoral degree in mental health, I worked in clinical settings, counseling centers, crisis centers, my own private practice , and university settings. While managing my own counseling center, I also served several years teaching graduate students in the areas of counseling and psychology. My joy comes from helping others regain control of life when cognitions, emotions, and behaviors have caused distress. My counseling style is relaxed, but very direct. I prefer for clients to come to counseling weary of how things are going and prepared to begin changing their life.

I practice solution-oriented and CBT counseling techniques which means that we work hard to ensure you come to as few sessions as possible. Many clients report 6 to 10 sessions are sufficient to provide mastery over the symptoms that brought them to therapy.

Integrity, honesty and decency are keys to success and it is my commitment to bring these characteristics to each session.

I specialize in helping individuals cope with the different kinds of losses: 1) Primary losses - the death of a loved one, friend or pet, break-up, separation, divorce, loss of job, loss of money, the victim of a crime and losses due to Covid19 2)Secondary losses  - moving, illness, changes and success; 3) Limbo losses - Covid 19, waiting for the outcome of a test result, a lawsuit, separation, not knowing the outcome; 4) Complicated losses - primary, secondary and limbo losses going on at the same time.  The reactions to loss could be feeling of anxiety, depression, helpless, fearful, emptiness, despair, pessimistic, irritability, anger, guilty, restlessness, loss of concentration, hope, motivation, energy, change in appetite, sleep pattern and a tendency to be more fatigued and error prone. Are you experiencing any of those feelings? I also work with individuals who desire prayer before our sessions.

My background is in secondary education and school counseling, for 27 years. I have had my counseling license for 13 years.  I am currently a part-time, private counselor, using online with adult clients and in person, for youth, through non-profit, school programs.  

I earned an A.A. in Historical Studies from San Jacinto College, Central Campus, La Porte, Texas, June of 1991. I earned my B.A. in Secondary Social Studies from the University of Houston, Clearlake Campus, in Houston, Texas in June of 1994. And I earned my M.Ed. from University of Texas State in San Marcos, in December of 2010.  I later added my license in Professional Counseling, in April of 2011. I am interested in the ways trauma impacts the individual and plan to be trained in EMDR, within the year. 

I am empathetic to the challenge that real life experiences bring and the need to heal and evolve from the times in our lives when we have lived predominately in our shadow side.
