Hi, I am a Marriage and Family Therapist licensed in California for 20 years and I hold a doctorate degree in the Philosophy of Counseling. I am in my second marriage for 30 years now, after my 24-year first marriage failed. We have seven children between the two of us, 31 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren. I have had good success counseling couples who have given up on their relationship, especially those who have experienced infidelity. I don't counsel children until they are 18. I enjoy helping people understand how they became the way they are and therefore find ways to leave dysfunction behind.

I believe therapy can unravel harmful repetitive thought processes and behaviors. Your painful experiences do not have to define you. My approach to therapy always starts with listening to my client's needs. My methods evolve through constant customization and mutual collaboration. My approach integrates Person-Centered Expressive Arts Therapy, Internal Family Systems (IFS), Somatic Experiencing, mindfulness, DBT, CBT, motivational interviewing, active imagination, systems theory, and solution-focused therapy. I believe healing involves more than changing thoughts alone. Research on neuroplasticity shows the brain and nervous system can form new pathways throughout life, creating opportunities for meaningful emotional and behavioral change. Therapy can support not only insight, but also emotional regulation, self-compassion, nervous system balance, creativity, and resilience. I work collaboratively and compassionately, welcoming all parts of you into the therapeutic process. Together, we may explore thoughts, emotions, body awareness, imagination, patterns shaped by past experiences, and practical tools that support lasting growth and healing. You do not need to be “artistic” to benefit from expressive arts therapy.

As an American Family Therapist, I work from a systemic perspective, focusing on the entire family unit rather than just the individual. My goal is to help families uncover and understand deep-rooted patterns and issues that interfere with healthy communication and connection. Through this process, I support each member in developing more effective ways of relating, resolving conflict, and fostering emotional safety with the family system. I primarily use Dialectical Behavior Therapy and view my work through that lens. This means focusing on mindfulness, expanding tolerance for discomfort, increasing effectiveness in relationships and strengthening emotional regulation. When challenges arise in therapy, I often find that the root of the issue can be addressed through one of these core areas. For clients struggling with post-traumatic stress injuries-particularly common in military populations-I also incorporate Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) to help them reframe and work through trauma-related beliefs. My approach is structured, evidence-based, and tailored to the needs of each individual or family.

I have been in the helping professions since 2005 and as a licensed therapist for 16 years. I’ve worked with a variety of clients of different cultures throughout. Early in my training, there was a heavy emphasis on the Western approach to address symptomology, but now as my career and experience have grown, I blend Western approach with Eastern influence, emphasizing the link between the mind and the body, and how trauma lives within the body, not just in our minds.

I have worked in the mental health field for over 20 years- 14 of those as a therapist. I love my work, even when it's hard. I chose to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker because it fits with my own holistic view of treatment. Social Work considers individual mental health through the lens of the person's environment, family situation, social connections, access to resources, financial circumstances, and the like. In addition to whatever our primary need is, our world also affects our mental health. And that needs to be considered in how we approach treatment. I began my career as a therapist at Humboldt County Behavioral Health in Eureka, CA. My years working at the county in outpatient, inpatient, addiction treatment, and crisis service programs provide a depth and breadth of experience that is hard to acquire elsewhere. I view therapy as a team effort, a relationship developed through trust and clear communication. You are the one doing the work, and my job is to support you along the way, offer guidance, education, help you feel safe, and be your cheerleader. Collaboration, discussion, and experimentation with treatment modalities are an essential part of the process. I see therapy as exciting, with lots of opportunity to learn and grow and incorporate new information and experiences. We are all so different, we will work together to make sure you are confident that your therapy is realistic and meaningful to you. Progress is achieved only if both the client and the therapist put in the work and share the load. Your healing journey may be a difficult one, but not impossible. It is an honor to be part of this journey with you.

I specialize in helping teens and young adults better understand themselves, build healthy coping skills, heal from difficult experiences, and gain confidence as they move toward the life they want. My journey to becoming a therapist began in child welfare, where I witnessed firsthand the resilience of young people and the complex challenges many families face. For more than 10 years, I've been committed to serving underserved communities and providing a safe, supportive space where clients feel heard, understood, and empowered. My goal is to walk alongside you, helping you navigate life's challenges while building the tools and confidence needed to reach your personal goals.

Hello, I’m Shimeka Arnold, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and founder of Lovely Day Family Therapy. I believe healing begins in a space where people feel truly seen, heard, and accepted without judgment. If you’re looking for a therapist who is warm, authentic, and compassionate, you may find that we work well together. I enjoy working with children, adolescents, adults, and families from diverse backgrounds and identities. Whether you’re navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship challenges, life transitions, stress or simply feeling overwhelmed, my goal is to provide a safe and supportive environment where you can explore your experiences and discover you strengths. My approach is collaborative, strengths-based, and tailored to your unique needs. I believe that meaningful change happens when people feel empowered, connected, and supported. Together, we’ll work to build healthier patterns, increase self-understanding, and develop practical tools that help you move toward greater balance and emotional well-being . Clients often appreciate my genuine, nonjudgmental style and my ability to create a space where they can be themselves. My hope is that you leave each session feeling supported, encouraged, and reminded that you don’t have to navigate life’s challenges alone. It would be an honor to walk alongside you on your journey toward healing and growth.

Reaching out for help can be a very vulnerable experience, but also a great attribute of strength and resilience. I work with individuals who have experienced trauma in their life. Whether it's from childhood neglect, sexual assault, natural disaster, sudden death or other life circumstances. Trauma often creates patterns and loops that extend into many areas of a person's life, and can be challenging and painful to navigate. Sometimes the way people survive their trauma brings them more pain, adds to the chaos, and reinforces negative beliefs that perpetuate the cycle. I work to empower clients to understand and alter unhealthy cycles to strengthen and better their lives. I am fluent in ASL American Sign Language and have worked with Deaf clients leaving domestic violence in both a shelter and outpatient therapy services. I have spent 2 years in correctional settings working with severely mentally ill patients and supporting their family members navigating having children with mental illness. I have also spent 2 years working with foster youth and foster parents in providing support to their placements, promoting healing and preserving relationships. Note that online scheduling is limited. Broader scheduling options will be available to regularly scheduling clients. Please also note that I do not provide opinions about disability or fitness to return to work or other activities for clients who are not well-established at the time that the request for such opinion is made.
