47 years of experience

I am a licensed clinical psychologist (PhD) in northern California. I received my doctorate degree from the University of Florida. I have 40+ years of experience as a therapist treating adults. I will only see patients in-person in my office. Phone calls and texting/emails are used for communication as necessary between visits. I initially address what prompted an individual to seek help at this particular time, ie why now? I help people clarify issues--concerns, thoughts, feelings, situations--and explore/develop effective coping strategies and behaviors.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

My first session focuses on what prompted the patient to seek help now as opposed to a few months ago or a few months from now. The first session will include a brief history and review of what coping behaviors have they already tried which have been unsuccessful. It will also include their expectations/goals for treatment. We will discuss treatment frequency, treatment approach and ground rules.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

I am direct but engaging/sincere.. I very quickly "know my audience" and connect easily and quickly with most patients but not all. As a result of my many years of experience and at this stage of my career, I will not be surprised or overwhelmed by any case or situation I will encounter. I set boundaries with patients and am comfortable with my clinical judgment, giving direct feedback and making behavioral recommendations. I learned early in my training that a therapist's influence is limited: a patient will not do what they do not want to do. Knowledge does not automatically lead to behavior change. The timing of particular treatments / recommendations and the therapist's credibility are critical to patient acceptance and success.

Describe the client(s) you are best positioned to serve.

I particularly enjoy working with people who have relationship problems--with romantic partners. family members, work colleagues/supervisors, friends or general social anxiety---which are causing significant distress. We build a mutually trusting therapeutic relationship which promotes their willingness to incrementally get out of their comfort zone to expand their behaviors and improve their self esteem/quality of life.

My treatment methods

Eclectic

My overall approach is direct but engaging/supportive. I assess and then discuss with each patient what I think would be the best/most effective treatment approach or combination of approaches to begin treatment. I initially address what prompted them to seek treatment at this particular time/initial goals. I focus on clarification of thoughts, feelings, concerns then exploration of all options, then facilitation of decision making. Each session concludes with an agreed upon task the patient will perform before next session. In addition the possible role of medication is addressed if warranted by my evaluation.
