Therapy is a journey, whether you are familiar to the process or just beginning, I am so glad you are here. I'm a licensed counselor with a diverse background, I enjoyed working with those who were incarcerated make better choices for their future on the outside, working with those in active addiction trying to do something to make recovery possible, and working in a busy outpatient mental health clinic. With each experience, I learned how to work with various populations and enhance my skills. The most rewarding part of my job is seeing the "light blub" moment occur with a client or helping a client heal when they are struggling.

I am a licensed professional counselor in Pennsylvania. I have nearly twenty-three years of experience as a therapist. My areas of expertise are addictions and couple's counseling. However, over the years I have treated clients who have struggled with anxiety, depression, mood swings, ADD, ADHD, PTSD, OCD, sexual abuse/assault, and eating disorders. I have also worked with a few veterans over the years. When working with couples, I always focus on communication skills and tools, as well as ways to fight nicely first before moving on to what is actually bringing the couple to therapy. Other areas with couples I have treated have been related to infertility, infidelity, parenting issues, financial problems, and family problems. I am married and have been for twenty-one years and also have 2 children, a son age 18 and a daughter who is 15, as well as our rescue dog who will be 4. I do work full time as a clinical auditor for a behavioral health care company and also teach part-time at one of our local universities.

My name is Graham Maxey. I have been a Licensed Professional Counselor since 1983, after graduating from the University of Houston/Clear Lake with a Master of Arts in Behavioral Science. I had noticed for many years that the primary problems people experienced in life were mainly due to living in a space of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that were "too small" to accommodate their well-being or their enjoyment in living. My goal as a counselor has always been to help clients "widen" the spaces they live in and let them have fuller access to all that their lives actually can provide for them.

I believe that a holistic approach to mental health is the most lasting way to approach therapy. I enjoy working with individuals to explore their feelings to come to a place of acceptance and self-compassion. My areas of expertise are anxiety, depression, mood disorders, and trauma. All of us have things in our lives that didn’t cause the trauma but trigger it. I can help you overcome these triggers. I am passionate about educating people about “small t trauma” and “big T trauma,” because so often individuals don’t even recognize traumatic experiences as significant because “they could have had it worse.” "Little t traumas" are experiences that leave someone feeling hopeless. They are distressing events that can be beyond a person’s ability to cope, although they do not necessarily cause life-threatening or bodily-threatening outcomes. Some examples of "little t traumas" can include; infidelity, divorce, legal trouble, grief, interpersonal conflict, bullying, financial difficulty, chronic stress, living in an unsafe environment, or feeling unloved, worthless or unimportant. "Big T traumas" are the types of traumas that are deeply disturbing, life-threatening events or situations. some examples of these are being the witness to or victim of; violent crimes, abuse, war, natural disasters, serious car accidents, or death. Working through trauma is hard, it is often life-long, but it is worth it. I can help you live your best life, regardless of your trauma history. I am honored to work with all types of individuals. I strive to live an examined life and to continue to learn and better myself, to best impact the world around me. I know from my personal and professional experiences that we must have good habits firmly in place or bad habits will take over. I aim to educate and empower my clients within a safe, inclusive and nonjudgmental environment.

I see therapy as a unique opportunity for people to learn more about themselves: their pain, fears, struggles, strengths, hopes, and dreams. In doing so, we can work to overcome past pains and progress towards the life you have always wanted. I am committed to working with individuals as they take this journey of discovery and change. I seek to form authentic relationships with clients in order to create a comfortable and safe environment. I practice from a psychodynamic perspective. This means that I will work with you to understand how your past influences your present. This can only be done in a non-judgmental and welcoming environment in which you feel secure and accepted. I currently offer individual sessions via telehealth. Please do not hesitate to contact me to schedule a free consultation to see if we are a good fit. I have 31 years of experience providing counseling. I use cognitive behavioral therapy, stressing that what we think determines what we feel and what we do. For many reasons, people learn unrealistic or destructive thoughts that cause them problems in their lives. Therapy works towards more realistic thinking, and avoiding old and destructive thinking. As I like to say, "therapy is a conversation with a destination," and realistic thinking is that destination. While I am a Christian, I am not trained as a Christian Counselor. I am a "Counselor who is a Christian." My training is secular, and I regularly see people or all faiths, or none at all. I do not offer court ordered services, nor do I do assessments for custody, or any other legal purpose. Unfortunately, I cannot accept Medicare, or Medicare based plans. The world is changing, and more and more people are reaching out. I am seeing more men that have been in abusive relationships. There are also more people dealing with loss. Coming to my office is not like going to a big mental health clinic where you just another number on a spreadsheet. In my care, you are a person, and you'll be treated like one.

Hello! I appreciate that you’re taking this step toward finding a therapist you feel will be a good fit for you. I am a licensed clinical social worker with 13 years of experience. For most of this time I have worked with people around issues of depression, anxiety, PTSD, grief, and relationship/family issues. I am also passionate about working with LGBTQ folks around issues of coming out and self-acceptance. I know that the decision to look for a therapist isn’t always an easy one but, by doing so, you are taking an important first step toward creating change for yourself! I take a down-to-earth, supportive, conversational approach to therapy. I engage in discussion and don’t hesitate to share my own life experience when appropriate. I find that a more personal approach helps strengthen the relationship between me and the people I meet with which, in turn, will help you feel more comfortable being open in sessions. I take this approach because therapy is most successful when a person feels like their therapist understands them and when there is some level of connection. I focus on ensuring you will feel both seen and heard starting with our first session. You will be approached by me with curiosity, interest, and care at all times. At the start of your sessions with me I will ask how you’d like to start that day’s conversation and, if you’re not sure, will support you in discovering what might be important for you to talk about in the moment. I invite you to schedule a first session to see if I am a good fit for what you’re looking for in therapy!

My goal is to establish a strong rapport with clients through a strengths-based, genuine, and nonjudgmental perspective. Utilizing an eclectic approach with evidence-based practices, I partner with each client to explore symptoms and establish treatment goals tailored to your needs. I'm Melissa, a psychotherapist in private practice for eight years. I love working with adults and teens, and my approach to therapy is collaborative and whole life centered. Areas of specialty include ADHD, relationship issues, trauma, anxiety disorders, gender issues, and PTSD. I became a therapist because therapy changed me, and continues to empower me. I'm honored to help you process traumas or life's everyday stressors, support you in meeting goals we design together, and help you better love the one and only unique you. "The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change." - Dr. Carl Rogers My own ADHD diagnosis at age 30 was life altering, and continues to fuel my compassion for neurodivergent clients struggling to figure themselves out. I also love empowering clients to strengthen their relationships, have more empathy for themselves and others, and discover what calm contentment means to them and how to achieve it.

I am a licensed clinical social worker who desires to see individuals and families of all ages have access to everything they need in order to experience health, safety, belonging and a sense of their purpose. I have experience in a variety of settings, am currently working as a school therapist, and am starting my private practice journey during the evenings. Frequently asked questions

Why filter by Pennsylvania rather than a city like Philadelphia?

When looking for online therapy, you can see anyone that is credentialed in the state. We want you to find the best fit, therefore, Grow Therapy shows available therapists across Pennsylvania from Pittsburgh to Scranton! If you’d rather see someone in-person, you can change the filter from virtual and find a therapist near you in Pennsylvania.

Will my therapist take Blue Cross Blue Shield?

Yes! If you use Blue Cross Blue Shield you’ll be asked to verify your Member ID at the time you book the appointment. However, if you don’t have Blue Cross Blue Shield you can select cash. Our therapists will have their cost of appointment on their profile. Individual session costs will vary.

How does the Specialty Filter work? Can I find a therapist that focuses on a specific issue?

The specialty filter is optional. You don’t need to check any boxes to see a provider. However, fit is very important when selecting an online therapist. If you have knowledge or experience to recognize what specialties you may need.

What are the "Clients say I'm" badges?

Grow Therapy asks patients about their experience with therapists after they have had a certain number of sessions. After enough responses, we add those characteristics to their profiles to help you find the best online therapists for you. We're still working on collecting this information from all our therapists.

Why use Gender, Age, and Identities filters?

Finding a provider with a similar life experience can be beneficial because it can be easier to establish rapport and potentially be understood quicker and clearer.

What to expect during your first session?

Your first therapy session is for you and your therapist to meet each other and to ask any questions that you have about the counseling process. This is where you can expect your therapist to do the same as they will ask questions to gain insight into your specific situation. In this first session the therapist is doing their part to gather as much information so they can better assess if they are able to meet your therapeutic needs.

Depending upon your provider's specialty, you may also discuss the methods the therapist will use. For additional information on therapy methods, please visit the Grow Therapy Help Center. Some people feel nervous before their first appointment, and that is totally normal! Coming prepared with a list of questions for your therapist may help. Remember, you're taking a brave step by seeking therapy, and it is okay to be nervous as you try something new.
