My name is Jennifer. I live in Birmingham, Alabama. I obtained my Masters of Science in Counseling in 2007 and Education Specialist degree in Community Agency Counseling in 2009 from Jacksonville State University. In 2021, I completed by PhD from Walden University in Counselor Education and Supervision. My dissertation was on Emotional Support Animals and their utilization.
I have over 17 years experience in the counseling field ranging from residential settings, agency counseling, online counseling, in-office counseling, acute settings, and outpatient settings. I have worked with a vast variety of clients ranging from children (age 4) to older adults. I have experience working with individuals experiencing issues with depression, anxiety, self-esteem, family issues, relationship issues, career issues, mood disorders, substance abuse, anger management, and other serious mental illnesses.
I utilize techniques from the CBT, ACT, reality-based, psychodynamic, and motivational interviewing perspectives. I utilize a person-centered approach which allows each individual to experience personalized counseling experiences that works best for them.
I am a clinical social worker who provides individual therapy for adults. Over the course of my 20 plus year career, I have worked in various settings with a variety of client populations and concerns (anxiety, depression, Bipolar Disorder, self-esteem, assertive communication, adjustment to major life changes, and relationship concerns). As a therapist my role is to provide a non-judgmental, safe environment for individuals to explore their life issues and support them in their personal growth. I find that a lot of us struggle with listening to our inner critic and often beat ourselves up for past regrets, as well as spending a lot of valuable time worrying about the past and the "what if's" in the future. I hope we can work together to quiet this critic and find a way to enjoy the present.
Please note that my education and experience does not include working with clients presenting with eating disorders, complex PTSD/trauma, or OCD.

Something feels off, and you've been carrying it longer than you'd like to admit. I work with people who are ready to stop running from the hard stuff and start building something better, grounded, real, and rooted in what you actually need, not a one-size-fits-all plan. I'm a Licensed Professional Counselor with over 10 years of experience helping people move from surviving to actually living. I founded New Peaks Counseling because therapy should be collaborative and built around the person in front of me, not a script. I work best with people who look like they have it together but are quietly exhausted from holding it all. My approach blends clinical expertise with real talk. No jargon, no judgment, just a space to figure out what's actually going on and what to do about it.

Whether you're a new parent, going through a divorce, struggling with a medical diagnosis, or changing careers, I'm here to help you work through those feelings. I won't just hear your words, but I'll listen to the underlying message and meaning to what you share. You are the expert of your own life and already have the answers; my goal is to simply help you uncover them! We'll collaboratively build your treatment plan and work towards the goals you've set for yourself. You direct the course of treatment, and I'll be your guide to keep us on track.
Throughout my experience working with adolescents and young adults experiencing depression and anxiety, I have focused on creating a safe, supportive, and nonjudgmental environment where clients feel comfortable expressing their thoughts and emotions. I recognize that symptoms often present differently across developmental stages and may include changes in mood, social withdrawal, academic difficulties, low self-esteem, irritability, excessive worry, or challenges with emotional regulation.
As a licensed psychologist with a background in yoga and aerial arts I bring a unique and creative approach to therapy. I believe strongly in mindfulness-based interventions as a path to healing, while also honoring each client's individual path. As such I am very integrative and may incorporate several approaches such as MBCT, ACT, interpersonal, and solution-focused. I have been practicing for over 20 years but consider myself a seeker and constant learner which I believe is important to keep the therapy process from becoming stale.
