About me

I’m Dr. Jonathan Spikes, a mental health counselor dedicated to helping individuals and families heal, grow, and build resilience. My practice focuses on creating a safe, supportive space where we address challenges such as trauma, stress, and life transitions while developing tools for lasting emotional wellness. I believe in meeting clients where they are and walking with them toward the healthier, more fulfilling life they deserve. My approach to treatment is collaborative, compassionate, and tailored to each person’s unique journey. I use evidence-based practices—such as cognitive-behavioral techniques, trauma-informed care, and solution-focused strategies—while also focusing on building trust and creating a safe space for open conversation. My ideal clients are individuals and families who may feel overwhelmed by life’s challenges—whether it’s coping with trauma, navigating stress, managing anxiety or depression, or working through difficult transitions. I also work closely with young people who are learning to find their voice and build resilience in the face of adversity.

Get to know me

In our first session together, here's what you can expect

Your first therapy session is an opportunity for us to get to know one another and begin creating a safe, comfortable space where you can speak openly and without judgment. If this is your first experience with therapy, you do not need to arrive knowing exactly what to say or where to begin. We will take the process one step at a time. During our first session, I will spend time learning about you, what brought you to therapy, the challenges you are currently experiencing, and what you hope will be different as a result of treatment. We may discuss your relationships, family experiences, significant life events, current stressors, strengths, coping strategies, and other areas that are important to understanding your needs. You will also have an opportunity to ask questions about therapy, discuss any concerns you may have, and determine whether my approach feels like a good fit for you. Together, we will begin identifying treatment goals and developing a plan that reflects what you want to accomplish. Most importantly, I want you to leave your first session feeling heard, respected, and hopeful. You may not leave with every problem solved, but you should leave with a clearer understanding of where we are going, what we can work on together, and the reassurance that you do not have to navigate the challenges that brought you to therapy alone.

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

One of my greatest strengths as a therapist is my ability to create a safe, authentic, and nonjudgmental environment where clients feel comfortable being honest about what they are experiencing. I bring empathy, active listening, patience, and compassion into each session while also being willing to challenge clients when necessary. I believe meaningful growth requires both support and accountability. My approach stands out because I do not believe in a one-size-fits-all approach to therapy. I take time to understand each client's experiences, culture, relationships, strengths, values, and goals and tailor treatment accordingly. I help clients look beyond their immediate symptoms to understand the patterns, beliefs, experiences, and emotions that may be influencing their current behaviors and relationships. I also bring a practical and solution-focused perspective to therapy. I want clients to leave sessions with more than insight; I want them to have strategies they can apply in their everyday lives. Whether we are working on anxiety, relationships, boundaries, anger, self-esteem, communication, or major life transitions, I help clients translate what we discuss in therapy into meaningful action. Ultimately, I strive to balance empathy with honesty, encouragement with accountability, and reflection with action. My goal is to meet clients where they are while helping them develop the confidence, skills, and self-awareness necessary to move toward where they want to be.

The clients I'm best positioned to serve

My ideal client is someone who may be navigating anxiety, relationship difficulties, life transitions, anger, family conflict, low self-esteem, codependency, or the effects of past experiences that continue to influence their present life. They may feel stuck, overwhelmed, misunderstood, or uncertain about how to move forward, but they recognize that something needs to change. I especially enjoy working with clients who are ready to better understand themselves and the patterns that influence their thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and relationships. They do not have to arrive in therapy with all the answers—or even know exactly where to begin. What matters most is a willingness to be honest, curious, and open to the therapeutic process. My ideal client wants more than temporary relief from symptoms. They want to develop healthier coping skills, strengthen relationships, establish appropriate boundaries, improve communication, build confidence, and address beliefs or behaviors that may be preventing them from becoming the person they want to be. I welcome clients wherever they are in their journey. Together, we can create a space where they feel heard and supported while also being appropriately challenged to grow. The goal is not perfection; it is greater self-awareness, healthier choices, meaningful change, and a life that feels more aligned with their values and goals.

My treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help clients understand the connection between their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Often, the way we interpret a situation influences how we feel and ultimately how we respond. Together, we identify thought patterns and beliefs that may be contributing to anxiety, depression, anger, relationship difficulties, low self-esteem, or other concerns. CBT in my practice is collaborative and practical. Rather than simply telling clients to "think positively," I help them examine whether their thoughts are accurate, balanced, and helpful. We work to recognize cognitive distortions, challenge unhelpful beliefs, consider alternative perspectives, and develop healthier ways of responding to difficult situations. I also incorporate practical skills that clients can use outside of therapy, including coping strategies, problem-solving, emotional regulation, communication skills, behavioral changes, and techniques for managing triggers. At times, clients may be encouraged to practice a skill, track thoughts or emotions, or intentionally try a different response between sessions. My goal with CBT is not to change who you are or tell you how you should think. Instead, it is to help you become more aware of the patterns influencing your life and give you the tools to decide whether those patterns are helping you become the person you want to be. Over time, clients can develop greater self-awareness, emotional control, confidence, and the ability to respond to life's challenges in healthier and more intentional ways.
