As a clinician with ADHD I have experienced firsthand many of the issues that individuals with ADHD face on a daily basis (poor experience with providers, family conflict regarding diagnosis, learning skills to accommodate my specific flavor of neurodiversity, etc). Hi, I’m CJ Backer—a licensed marriage and family therapist who walks alongside people as they navigate the deeper questions of identity, purpose, and emotional well-being. So many of us move through life carrying the weight of expectations—what we should be, how we should feel, who we should become. My work is about helping you gently untangle from all of that, and reconnect with the person you are underneath the roles, pressure, and performance. Whether you’re facing anxiety, depression, trauma, or just that quiet feeling that something’s off—I offer a space where you can slow down, reflect, and begin to heal. In our work together, you’ll find a space that’s compassionate and real—where you’re not just seen through the lens of symptoms or labels, but as a whole person with a story that matters. I integrate evidence-based practices like CBT, DBT, and motivational interviewing, but always with the understanding that tools only work when they’re paired with trust, empathy, and authenticity. Ultimately, my goal is to help you reconnect with who you are—not just who the world told you to be—so you can move through life with more clarity, courage, and self-trust.

I'm passionate about working with adults coping with depression, relationship difficulties, substance use/co-occurring disorders, complicated family dynamics, career or academic challenges, life transitions, and the effects of trauma. In our work together, I'll incorporate reflection, curiosity, and humor alongside therapeutic modalities such as solution-focused therapy, mindfulness, and cognitive-behavioral therapy. I'll hold a safe, shame-free space for us where we can explore new ways to address unhelpful patterns, move through uncomfortable feelings, and be kinder to yourself. Therapy does not need to be scary nor dull. My clients would say I come across as competent and compassionate. No one deserves to do life alone. I look forward to being on your team and tackling challenges together one step at a time.

Because sleep quality is critical to physical and mental health I am passionate about helping people get good sleep. I received my PhD from Duke University and have been a practicing psychologist for many years. I work primarily with behavioral sleep medicine because sleep problems are so widespread and there are not enough specialists to meet the need. I continue working with people with anxiety, depression, and couples issues. The methods I use are evidence-based and trauma-informed. I am also an ordained member of the clergy (rabbi) and consider one's spirituality an important part of treatment for many, though not all people. I’ve practiced telehealth exclusively since early 2020. Most people like working this way because of convenience. Therapy is not adversely affected and I am even able to do hypnosis via telehealth.

Hey, I'm Matt. Life may not offer a lot of certainty, but one thing is for sure: everyone struggles sometimes. You might feel like you struggle MOST of the time. I’d like to counter that notion with the belief that embracing those struggles can be the key to overcoming them. To be clear, embracing our struggles doesn’t mean they simply disappear, but I believe we can learn to acknowledge and manage them in a way that will allow us to feel more empowered and prepared to face them. When we live with anxiety and depression, it makes sense that we would want a permanent fix, but I believe that expectation too often leads to feelings of hopelessness simply because that’s not how anxiety and depression work. What if, instead of waiting for them to magically disappear, we learned to acknowledge those feelings and used our own unique experiences with them to get ourselves through the struggles? If you are struggling, I’d like to offer a safe space for you to talk it out and hopefully come away with a different perspective on your ability to manage your anxiety and/or depression. I might point out a turn here and there, but you’ll do the driving!

Tampa, FL - Accepting clients in FL

Since becoming a counselor, I have worked in a variety of community counseling settings. I have worked with clients from ages 3 through 80 and with individuals, couples, and families. With that breadth of experience, very little shocks or surprises me and I have gotten a pretty good sense of where the types of counseling that play to my strengths as a counselor overlap with the types of counseling that are helpful for my clients. This sense (along with learning about lots and lots of research into what helps people find and maintain mental health) has led to the following guiding principles that shape all the counseling I do: 1) The client is always in charge. I know a lot of things but you will always be the one who decides what you want to get out of counseling, how we work towards that goal, whether or not what we’re doing seems to be working, and when we’re done. 2) Change and health happen through relationships. No matter what you come in for, there are always relational implications of change and relational factors that contribute to whatever it is that you came to counseling to change. 3) Counseling should be efficient. Counseling has significant costs in time and money. I think the benefits far outweigh the costs but if I can give you the benefits while helping you save on the costs then I want to do that.

I'm Karen, and I'm here to help support your journey to wellness. I hold a PhD in Counseling, and I am licensed in both Florida (LMHC) and Maryland (LCPC). I've worked with clients in counseling and have trained counseling graduate students for over 20 years. Early in my career, I specialized in helping clients work through interpersonal trauma, such as sexual abuse and physical abuse. Since then, I have widened my scope of practice to more general needs, such as anxiety and depression, but always with an awareness of trauma-informed practice when applicable. I work with children, adolescents, and adults. I believe there is always room for hope and optimism, and that compassion, empathy, and understanding bring us greater fulfillment in our lives. My passion for travel and photography have taught me how a change of perspective can fundamentally change the way the world looks. Hope I can help YOU get a change of perspective in your life!
