My work is directed by a desire to help people experience emotional growth with stronger forms of self-regulation. My goal is to help people establish the foundation(s) that will help them create and maintain greater coping skills. The strengthening of existing personal skills will help a person deal with the difficult events and stressors of their past more successfully. The creation of new skills is life-impacting. These new skills will help guide a person as he/she moves toward positive experiences while leaving the negative past behind. I feel the relationship between a counselor and client is extremely important. My counseling style demonstrates compassion, affirmation, flexibility, and fairness. I personally feel that healing happens best within an environment of kindness, trust, and understanding. I have more than twenty years in the Education fields. My work has consistently been with people with differing backgrounds, histories, and experiences. I have worked with people of different ethnicities, religious beliefs, sexual orientations, and mental health issues. Hello, I was born and raised in Stockton, California. I enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps at the age of 17 and in 1997, after 25 yeas of service, I retired from the Marine Corps as a Master Sergeant. After retiring from the Marine Corps, I worked as a Farrier (Horseshoer), as well as a structural welder (Ironworker), as those were the most marketable skill that I had. I came to a point where old injuries came back to haunt me and I could no longer walk (several years later, thanks to a surgery through the VA, I can walk again; thankful for that). At this point, I changed professions and out of a desire to work with veterans, I returned to school, accomplishing all that was necessary to become a licensed counselor. I spent another career working for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, specifically as a counselor in the Readjustment Counseling Service (Vet Center). I recently retired from the Vet Center and now I work part-time here with Grow Therapy. As a retired Marine senior staff Non-Commissioned Officer (SNCO) and disabled combat veteran myself, the Vet Center was the perfect job. Vet Centers provide readjustment counseling to combat veterans and provide counseling to survivors of military sexual trauma (MST). Vet Centers also provide group counseling, bereavement counseling and couples counseling when this is determined to be of support to the veteran. Readjustment counseling many times consists of treating/addressing symptoms related to post-traumatic stress (PTSD), I.e., anxiety, depression, exaggerated startle response, hypervigilance, sleep disturbance, etc. Many veterans go on to work as first responders and working with many first responders as well as medical personal, has provided me with a great deal of additional experience.

Hello! I am Amanda, counselor of 17 years, wife of 19 years, and mother for 12 years and counting. I have been a resident of the North Austin area for the last five years and am a Texas native, though I did spend some time growing up in the beautiful mountains of Colorado. I am active in my son’s school, my church and my community which I am happy to call home. I have worked in domestic violence shelters, residential programs for children, with Child Protective Services, and in Private Practice. For many years I have had the privilege of joining my clients in the process of change. We go through so much in our lives. Love, loss, stress and anxieties shape who we are. I respect the courage that it takes to look at these things and seek growth and change.

Since the days of pigtails, I’ve been pulled by this strong force to access wisdom and connect with something higher than this tangible world. This gnawing passion has led me to study the power of the mind and how to create what our souls truly desire. I’ve been blessed to study ancient technologies such as yoga and breathwork and am so passionate about sharing simple tools to effect real change. I was trained in counseling at University of North Texas, receiving my Masters in Education. My favorite courses were transpersonal counseling and stress reduction through movement. I am currently a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Texas and have currently been practicing for 4 years. I’m also a certified yoga teacher and trained at the Shri Kali ashram in India. The types of yoga I teach focus on activating the parasympathetic nervous system to release the whole self from the ever vigilant fight or flight mode a lot of us find ourselves in on a constant basis to survive in this modern culture. In the therapy session, my main intent is to be fully present with you, free of judgment; to Become a spacious environment in which you can explore your own truth and start to shed the layers that no longer serve.

Dealing with life struggles can be overwhelming and at times it can be exhausting. Life stressors and impactful situations can greatly affect our mental well-being and as a result, affect our physical health in the process. Having the necessary and proper tools to work through those issues are essential to better one's life. By providing you with a compassionate and nonjudgmental space, I can help you feel safe and provide the support you need as you explore your inner self and work toward healing and growth. I utilize cognitive behavioral therapy models to help individuals change the view of their struggles to obtain favorable changes. Changing your thought process can help you realize and understand you have power in your hands to make great changes and in turn obtain more desirable results.
