If you’re here it’s likely because you find yourself struggling. Perhaps you’re in the midst of a transition - a new job, a new city, graduating college, the end of a relationship, or the loss of a loved one. You’re not sure how to navigate the situation and the feelings associated with it are intense. Maybe you’re like the estimated 21 million U.S. adults living with depression. You can’t find any motivation. You're staying in more instead of meeting up with friends. You’re crying for no apparent reason. Maybe you’re like the estimated 42.5 million U.S. adults who live with anxiety. You can’t find rest. You don't feel safe. Your thoughts race and you feel on edge all the time. I'm here to walk with you. In our work together we will navigate immediate challenges while also finding new insights and a deeper self-awareness that will help you develop a healthier relationship with yourself and others. I often draw from Cognitive Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and most prominently from a Psychodynamic approach to guide you through this process of change. Whether you're new to therapy or have had past experiences it is my hope that our work together will offer you new perceptions that can be used for change and help you feel more comfortable with you.

Hello! I appreciate that you’re taking this step toward finding a therapist you feel will be a good fit for you. I am a licensed clinical social worker with 13 years of experience. For most of this time I have worked with people around issues of depression, anxiety, PTSD, grief, and relationship/family issues. I am also passionate about working with LGBTQ folks around issues of coming out and self-acceptance. I know that the decision to look for a therapist isn’t always an easy one but, by doing so, you are taking an important first step toward creating change for yourself! I take a down-to-earth, supportive, conversational approach to therapy. I engage in discussion and don’t hesitate to share my own life experience when appropriate. I find that a more personal approach helps strengthen the relationship between me and the people I meet with which, in turn, will help you feel more comfortable being open in sessions. I take this approach because therapy is most successful when a person feels like their therapist understands them and when there is some level of connection. I focus on ensuring you will feel both seen and heard starting with our first session. You will be approached by me with curiosity, interest, and care at all times. At the start of your sessions with me I will ask how you’d like to start that day’s conversation and, if you’re not sure, will support you in discovering what might be important for you to talk about in the moment. I invite you to schedule a first session to see if I am a good fit for what you’re looking for in therapy!

My name is Dese’Rae L. Stage (she/her), but you can call me Des. I’m a mom, therapist, licensed clinical social worker (LCSW), suicidologist, artist, and advocate in Philadelphia, PA. I wear a lot of hats. I identify as a queer, white, cisgender single parent and live with depression, anxiety, ADHD, CPTSD, and chronic suicidal thoughts. It’s important to me to be transparent about my positionality, in terms of my identity and lived experiences, as well as being someone who receives mental health services—I know what it’s like to be in the therapy chair and sitting across from it. To that end, I come to my work as a partner and a support, rather than an expert. In past lives, I worked in the service industry and the music industry, and built a career as an award-winning suicide prevention advocate and artist. I live with two small humans, a Bernese Mountain Dog named Dolly Parton, a Basset Hound puppy named Frances Houseman (aka Baby), and a long-haired white Siamese mix with heterochromia named Betty White. I see live music at every available opportunity (and sometimes I still drag my camera along), and when I’m not at a show, I’m probably reading a book, eating something delicious, or building Lego sets. I have a lot of stories. Feel free to ask me what happened when OJ Simpson came into the restaurant I worked at while I was in high school, or about that one time Lou Reed told me to f*ck off.

Being a therapist has seemed like a natural progression for me. I have always been able to easily relate to others and meet them where they are. I have taken my own struggles and used them to help make myself stronger and be able to gain insight into how to help others who may be struggling. I think anyone can benefit through the self-exploration that comes with therapy. I find it rewarding to see the progress people are capable of and to help them see the progress themselves. I have many years of experience working with children and families as well as adults and couples. I have worked with individuals and families with children as young as 3 with a variety of concerns. I am a trauma-informed therapist who is trained in Prolonged Exposure Therapy to treat PTSD symptoms. I am trained in different approaches. I have experiencing with LGBTQIA individuals. I also use TTRPG's in therapy setting. I provide therapy that is non-judgemental and I seek to meet each person individually and see what they are experiencing and then build from there to solve or change. I’m here to provide you with the support you need to feel better than when we first begin.

I've been through a lot in my life. Most of you have too. After all, you find yourself here looking for something. It is my firm belief that each and every one of us has tremendous potential. We all have unique talents and skills, honed and sharpened through our life experiences. These experiences, while crucial to shaping us, can also leave us hurt, confused, numb, or insecure. It is paramount that we stop along our journey to take stock, address our needs, heal, and refocus. Sometimes, we realize we may benefit from having extra support or guidance through these moments. That is where therapy can help. Throughout my counseling career, I have had the privilege of being able to walk beside clients as they process the past, learn to be comfortable in the present, and get excited for the future. I am certified in trauma and treat clients with a wide range of concerns. Whether you feel ready to dive into therapy, or you are just contemplating the idea, I'd love to hear from you. I am currently accepting video clients for individual therapy. If you aren't ready to make contact, I have some resources available for self-reflection. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor with a Master of Science in Counseling Psychology (MSCP) from Chatham University and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Childhood Studies from Rutgers University, where I also minored in Criminal Justice and Gender Studies. My professional background is rooted in advocacy, social justice, and client-centered, trauma-informed care. I specialize in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) and support adolescents, young adults, and adults through deeply human experiences such as interpersonal violence, anxiety, depression, grief, self-doubt, racial identity, complex trauma, and life transitions. My therapeutic work is grounded in evidence-based modalities including CBT, Psychoanalytic, and Psychodynamic therapy—always held within a culturally responsive and client-centered lens. This is more than treatment—it’s connection, truth-telling, and reclamation. I work with you to explore the unconscious roots of your present-day distress—unraveling long-standing relational patterns, internal conflicts, and attachment wounds. Together, we examine how your early experiences have shaped your sense of self and relationships, not to stay in the past, but to understand it with compassion and gain new freedom in the present. I honor the complexity of healing—holding space for ambiguity, contradiction, and growth that unfolds over time. When requested, I integrate Christian counseling techniques—offering faith-based support if you want to explore your relationship with God and see your journey through a Christ-centered lens. Whether your faith is strong or just beginning, I use spiritual reflection, Scripture, and prayer as grounding tools for meaning-making, motivation, and healing. I aim to co-create a space where you can breathe deeper, speak freer, and begin again without shame. This is your space to show up as you are—to be witnessed in your becoming and reclaim your story.

Frequently asked questions

Why filter by Pennsylvania rather than a city like Philadelphia?

When looking for online therapy, you can see anyone that is credentialed in the state. We want you to find the best fit, therefore, Grow Therapy shows available therapists across Pennsylvania from Pittsburgh to Scranton! If you’d rather see someone in-person, you can change the filter from virtual and find a therapist near you in Pennsylvania.

Will my therapist take Oxford?

Yes! If you use Oxford you’ll be asked to verify your Member ID at the time you book the appointment. However, if you don’t have Oxford you can select cash. Our therapists will have their cost of appointment on their profile. Individual session costs will vary.

How does the Specialty Filter work? Can I find a therapist that focuses on a specific issue?

The specialty filter is optional. You don’t need to check any boxes to see a provider. However, fit is very important when selecting an online therapist. If you have knowledge or experience to recognize what specialties you may need.

What are the "Clients say I'm" badges?

Grow Therapy asks patients about their experience with therapists after they have had a certain number of sessions. After enough responses, we add those characteristics to their profiles to help you find the best online therapists for you. We're still working on collecting this information from all our therapists.

Why use Gender, Age, and Identities filters?

Finding a provider with a similar life experience can be beneficial because it can be easier to establish rapport and potentially be understood quicker and clearer.

What to expect during your first session?

Your first therapy session is for you and your therapist to meet each other and to ask any questions that you have about the counseling process. This is where you can expect your therapist to do the same as they will ask questions to gain insight into your specific situation. In this first session the therapist is doing their part to gather as much information so they can better assess if they are able to meet your therapeutic needs.

Depending upon your provider's specialty, you may also discuss the methods the therapist will use. For additional information on therapy methods, please visit the Grow Therapy Help Center. Some people feel nervous before their first appointment, and that is totally normal! Coming prepared with a list of questions for your therapist may help. Remember, you're taking a brave step by seeking therapy, and it is okay to be nervous as you try something new.
