Hi, I'm Pamela Altemos, Are you experiencing a mind-body disconnection? Perhaps you are feeling emotionally numb and detached from physical sensations and present experiences. Trauma disrupts the foundation of the body as a safe place, affecting survivors’ trust of self needed to establish and maintain healthy relationships with others. As a yoga instructor and therapist specializing in trauma, I help survivors rebuild a sense of trust and safety in the body by incorporating somatic exercises, breathwork, and relational skills. Through this holistic approach, clients are able to tolerate sensory and emotional experiences to cultivate a compassionate relationship with their bodies. In addition to the breathwork and somatic techniques, I incorporate modalities such as Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and Internal Family Systems (IFS). My practice honors an integrative approach that cultivates gentleness, acceptance, and compassion toward ourselves and others.

Often, we all go through difficult times. Times of despair, painful circumstances, and distress; Situations that many times affect our peace of mind and our relationships with ourselves and others. Sometimes, we even question the purpose of our lives because we feel like there is no purpose for what we are going through. As a caring clinician, I allow and encouraged my client to create a space for healing, where they feel in control of choosing their own path to freedom and sense of control.

With all of the challenges that life can throw at us, it is easy to feel overwhelmed or helpless. Life satisfaction and happiness might seem like distant goals with no clear path forward to reach them. You may find that you are spending more and more time stuck in your own head, perseverating on your struggles and acting as your own harshest critic. To me, therapy rooted in compassion and empathy can be a fantastic tool for navigating these challenges and discovering meaning and self-empowerment. Having begun my career at a community mental health clinic, I have experience working with a diverse population of adult clients from many socioeconomic, racial, and cultural backgrounds and with a variety of presenting concerns and challenges. I specialize in treatment for anxiety, depression, and trauma as well as struggles with substance use and always adapt my therapeutic techniques to the individual needs of my clients. My philosophy is that therapy is a partnership between client and therapist to help foster healthy coping skills, personal growth, self-compassion, and understanding of oneself.

I am a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor and I’m a registered supervisor with my board. In my career, I’ve had the opportunity to work in a variety of settings within public health, mental health treatment, substance use treatment, inpatient treatment, and private practice. While I have training in a number of therapeutic models, I primarily utilize existential approaches in therapy since their tenants are relatively universal in nature and relate well to most people's experiences. These tenants focus on an individual’s search for meaning, fears of loss, feelings of isolation, and the foundations of hope we build for ourselves. In terms of other models of treatment, I have certifications in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectic Behavioral Therapy, Critical Incident Stress Management, and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. I have extensive training in culturally-integrated therapy, sexual health therapy, cyberpsychology, and Gottman-based therapies for couples. I have had the privilege to work with a wide range of clients in terms of age, gender, race, social economic status, and acuity of symptoms. While everyone has something unique to bring to therapy I find the most fulfillment working with couples, those dealing with issues regarding their sexuality, first responders (police, firefighters, EMT’s), individuals recovering from trauma, and people dealing with concerns with technology such as video game or online addiction. Regardless of what you are looking for from therapy, my aspiration is to provide an open and welcoming environment where a collaborative relationship can be built to assist you in exploring concerns that you have in your life.

Currently, I provide clinical social work services to individuals involved in the criminal legal system. For the past three years, I have supported clients in addressing both childhood and current traumas, including those arising from interactions with the justice system. I have always naturally liked hearing other people's stories and helping them find a positive way through whatever difficulty they were experiencing. Even as a child, my mom would always ask, "Is the doctor in?," whenever I was on the phone with a friend. When I grew older, I found that I wanted to refine those skills and do even more. I did volunteering with kids in creative organizations and also worked within a hospice organization. I eventually did work in an outpatient community clinic that allowed me to connect with many different types of people from all walks of life and stages of life development. Additionally, I have treated adults with difficulties managing stress, anxiety, mood disorders, and life transitions. My dream clients are those who are open to interventions and really want to understand themselves better. I want to work with those who are willing to try. I believe therapy is not about being a perfect person, but rather developing better ways of looking at yourself and how to navigate the world. The road to healing and self-improvement does not always happen in a straight line, and I believe it takes patience to find the right way through.
