Life can be difficult, and sometimes we can get overwhelmed or lose our way. As a therapist, I can be a healthy support system to help you achieve emotion regulation by learning ways to control your emotional state and needs in various situations. I provide comfort in processing unresolved grief through psychoeducation about the 6 stages of grief (Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, Acceptance, Meaning). I lend support to you through your past and current traumatic events. I also focus on family and couple conflicts by addressing specific issues and improving communication and conflict resolution. If you find yourself relating to any of these this can be the time to seek additional support. I can help children ages 4 and up individual adults, couples, and families. I offer a safe space of support, empathy, and encouragement as we work together through your healing journey to become your best possible self.

I have a Doctorate in Psychology and am a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW). I have been working as a therapist for over 16 years. I specialize in mood disorders, anxiety, trauma and LGBTQIA issues. I believe that therapy should be a safe place to talk about personal issues without any judgment. We all need someone to talk to and therapy provides that space where you can be yourself. We all go through some things from time to time and should be able allowed to talk with someone who is willing to listen and provide us with the support that we need.

Welcome! I am a Bilingual Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Certified addiction counselor with over 20 years of experience. This is my second career and my passion. I have the honor, and privilege, of providing mental health services to young adults, and adults and provide counseling for a wide range of concerns including, anxiety, depression, substance misuse, processing addictions, anger, relationship difficulties, and life transitions. My counseling style focuses primarily on empowering clients to lead better lives, and in so doing, treat them with respect and dignity in a safe, supportive, encouraging, and warm space. My role as a therapist is to guide, advocate, advise, and educate those in need as they find their voices and healthier lifestyles, meeting them where they are at – believing that clients are the experts of their lives. I strive to establish rapport through understanding, honesty, and positive regard toward the individual while applying person-centered, person-in-environment theoretical orientations, and motivational interviewing. I use an integrated approach, based on the client’s needs through the course of therapy, established on client-therapist collaborative treatment plan development. This plan might integrate a combination of cognitive-behavioral therapy, mindfulness, meditation skills, dialectical behavioral therapy, and acceptance commitment therapy, grounded on the client’s preferences and needs.

I hold a Clinical Psychologist license to practice in Illinois. I completed my doctorate studies at Adler University. My professional experience in treatment spans over 25 years. I believe a person holds the ability to transform their life for the better. I find satisfaction in helping them advance on their path. The following examples show my methods for treating anxiety and depression. The evidence-based treatment method I use for anxiety focuses on individualized symptom-specific approaches that match the client’s needs and personal preferences. The combination of repetitive and irrational thoughts about perceived danger, uncertainty or failure creates distressing mental states which may manifest as negative thought, such as: "I am not good enough" or "something bad will happen" or "I will be fired if I make a mistake." I assist my clients to detect and fight their negative beliefs and thoughts. I guide clients to manage their anxiety symptoms with mindfulness breathing techniques and progressive muscle relaxation methods. With assigned homework including mindfulness exercises, I guide the client to maintain their progress and self-regulation between sessions. My depression treatment approach matches each client's symptoms, their life history, and their social environment. Depression exists on a spectrum from temporary sadness to persistent and severe Major Depressive Disorder. The maintenance of depression relies on negative thoughts such as “I am worthless” or “Nothing will ever get better.” Our focus will be to identify and modify. Through Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), I help clients view their depressive thoughts in a non-judgmental manner to reduce their rumination and emotional distress. By teaching problem solving skills and the practice of mindfulness helps the individual become more aware of their physical tension. Assigning homework guides the individual to improve sleep hygiene, self-care, and build effective coping strategies.

Currently I am only accepting new clients who are trans. I am a trans and queer Licensed Clinical Social Worker and artist with 15 years of experience in community mental health. My approach is that all people deserve to have the opportunity to experience a safe, kind, and welcoming space to explore their mental health, and that as a therapist, it is my job to nurture that. I am driven to create therapeutic opportunities for people who want and need them within the LGBTQ2IA+ community. I am open to working with clients that find themselves in need of an understanding, compassionate, and community-oriented therapist who will help to guide them through healing work. My areas of focus are: LGBTQ2IA+ and TGNC youth and emerging adults, major life transitions, trauma, depression, anxiety, grief, ADHD, gender dysphoria, and sexual identity exploration. I completed my Master of Social Work (MSW) and Master of Arts in Gender Studies (MA) degrees concurrently at Loyola University Chicago. Before entering graduate school, I worked in multiple positions focused on reproductive justice, body autonomy, and community care. My life and professional experiences have led me to provide therapy with a focus on community care through an anti oppressive lense. I understand that helping one person can have a positive impact on the greater community surrounding them. I believe that treatment approaches should fit the individual's needs and thus I utilize many modalities, including cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, mindfulness, somatics, and narrative therapy. My approaches of curiosity and kindness create a welcoming space to engage in therapy. Choosing to work with a therapist is a powerful way to help yourself and we all deserve a chance to have focused time to explore, learn, and grow through challenges.

Hi, I’m Mel B! I’m a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) with a Master’s degree in Social Work from Aurora University—and for the past 10 years, I’ve been helping young adults in their 20s quiet the anxiety spiral, build confidence, and start feeling in control of their lives. I specialize in supporting motivated, insightful young adults who are ready to: Navigate big life transitions like college, first jobs, or moving out on your own—without feeling like you’re drowning in “what ifs.” Enter (or re-enter!) the dating world with more confidence and less overthinking. Create a self-care routine that actually feels good—not like another chore on your to-do list. My approach is warm, conversational, and real. I believe therapy should feel like a mix of a safe space and a strategy session—with a few laughs along the way. I use practical tools, mindset shifts, and humor to help you feel understood and supported, while also giving you actionable steps you can actually use outside of sessions. And because therapy is also about connection, here’s a little about me: I’m a wife, a cat mom to three fur babies, and a proud Swiftie. I’m an iced coffee lover, love getting lost in young adult romance books, and am always planning my next trip. Big dreams and goal-setting? Totally my thing. If you’ve been looking for a therapist who truly gets what it’s like to be in your 20s, who will listen without judgment, and who can help you feel more confident navigating life’s transitions—I’d love to connect. Let’s work together to help you feel less anxious, more grounded, and fully ready to take on what’s next.

Search therapists by insurance

Frequently asked questions

Why filter by Illinois rather than a city like Chicago?

When looking for online therapy, you can see anyone that is credentialed in the state. We want you to find the best fit, therefore, Grow Therapy shows available therapists across Illinois from Rockford to Springfield! If you’d rather see someone in-person, you can change the filter from virtual and find a therapist near you in Illinois.

Will my therapist take insurance?

When booking you’ll be asked to verify with your Member ID. However, if you don’t have any of the insurances available you can select cash. Our therapists will have their cost of appointment on their profile. Individual session costs will vary.

How does the Specialty Filter work? Can I find a therapist that focuses on a specific issue?

The specialty filter is optional. You don’t need to check any boxes to see a provider. However, fit is very important when selecting an online therapist. If you have knowledge or experience to recognize what specialties you may need.

What are the "Clients say I'm" badges?

Grow Therapy asks patients about their experience with therapists after they have had a certain number of sessions. After enough responses, we add those characteristics to their profiles to help you find the best online therapists for you. We're still working on collecting this information from all our therapists.

Why use Gender, Age, and Identities filters?

Finding a provider with a similar life experience can be beneficial because it can be easier to establish rapport and potentially be understood quicker and clearer.

What to expect during your first session?

Your first therapy session is for you and your therapist to meet each other and to ask any questions that you have about the counseling process. This is where you can expect your therapist to do the same as they will ask questions to gain insight into your specific situation. In this first session the therapist is doing their part to gather as much information so they can better assess if they are able to meet your therapeutic needs.

Depending upon your provider's specialty, you may also discuss the methods the therapist will use. For additional information on therapy methods, please visit the Grow Therapy Help Center. Some people feel nervous before their first appointment, and that is totally normal! Coming prepared with a list of questions for your therapist may help. Remember, you're taking a brave step by seeking therapy, and it is okay to be nervous as you try something new.
