I spent my early childhood in Jamaica before settling in Southern California. My experiences moving between cultures helped shape my appreciation for the many ways people make sense of themselves, their relationships, and the world around them. I earned my Bachelor's degree in Psychology and Creative Writing from the University of California, Riverside, and my Master's in Social Work from the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs, where I specialized in Health and Mental Health Across the Life Span. I have extensive experience working with people of color and LGBTQ+ clients who have struggled to find spaces where they feel safe, understood, and accepted. I also enjoy working with creative and artistic individuals who are looking to overcome self-doubt, navigate creative blocks, and reconnect with their creative potential. My approach is collaborative, compassionate, and insight-oriented. Together, we'll explore the patterns, experiences, and beliefs that shape your life while building a deeper understanding of all parts of yourself, including the parts that may feel difficult to accept. Outside of therapy, I enjoy singing karaoke and immersing myself in stories of all kinds, whether through books, television, film, or video games.

I am a licensed marriage and family therapist. My passion for counseling started in 6th grade where I was nominated to be a peer counselor and I saw the power of how communication, active reflective listening and conflict resolution could shift relationships. I grew up in a chaotic household and studying psychology helped me to develop compassion, empathy and understanding where there was profound pain. My own experience with trauma, depression and anxiety helps me to understand clients from a lived perspective.

Hi, I’m Jessica Shivers, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with 13 years of experience supporting children, teens, adults, and families through life’s challenges. My passion for helping others began in the 11th grade when I took my first psychology class. I became fascinated by how people grow, heal, and overcome difficult experiences. I knew early on that I wanted to help others build the same sense of support, stability, and connection that I was fortunate to experience growing up with loving parents who guided and encouraged me throughout my life. Over the past 13 years, I’ve worked in community mental health, agency social work, intensive treatment foster care, case management, and behavioral health services supporting individuals and families navigating a wide range of life challenges. These experiences have given me a deep understanding of the real-life obstacles people face and the resilience they bring to the healing process. As a wife, mother of two young children, and bonus mom to a preteen, I understand firsthand the joys, stressors, and complexities that come with balancing family, work, relationships, and personal well-being. My goal is to create a warm, judgment-free space where you feel heard, supported, and empowered to make meaningful changes.

My name is Thomas Barhorst, and I started counseling in 2004. In addition to having a small private practice shortly after I received my Missouri license in 2007; I have worked as a K-12 school counselor, in substance use treatment, in a residential treatment setting, in a community mental health agency, helping individuals with disabilities transition into the workforce, and helping graduate students manage stress in their professional programs (i.e. medical school, dental school, etc.). Recently, I have begun providing telehealth therapy after obtaining licensure in Arizona and California. Outside of work, spending time with family and friends is important to me. I also enjoy stories, laughing, listening to stand-up comedy, cooking, playing sports like wallyball and ultimate frisbee on a non-competitive level, watching film noir and psychological thrillers, recently had the opportunity to take my car to a racetrack, and have played bass guitar in a rock band.

I am a 74-year old cisgender white woman who grew up in the midwest. I've entered the field of marriage and family therapy after many other careers. I was drawn to this work through my own personal work with therapists I loved and admired. For me, the process is the very "meat" of life. Seeking to release old stuck patterns, seeking to understand, seeking to become all that we can be! We are born to be connected to others, yet we are taught in many cultures to be fierce individuals. We are born into a gender with expectations for what that means from ourselves and others--and our physical gender may not even match our inner experience! It's no wonder that we struggle to find our way through our biographies. Before becoming a therapist I worked for 25 years as a Waldorf educator. I worked with all ages--Kindergarten through high school. This is a developmental education and an artistic one. I am always informed by our developmental tasks through life, well into our final years. I also enjoy stepping into creative, imaginative when clients are open to it, even if just to think about a problem in a new way. My imagination serves me when I am with someone. I have experienced a great deal of trauma and loss, but my experience is never the same as yours. With your help I can step into your experience through my capacity to imagine.

I have experience working with individuals who have experienced trauma and adults experiencing acute emotional distress or psychiatric episodes. I also understand the Latinx and first-generation experience. I grew up learning the power of strength and resilience, but also how easily we forget to care for ourselves. That's part of what inspired me to become a therapist. I understand that you are carrying a lot, sometimes from past generations. It's okay to reach out for help. I can help you navigate through generational trauma, cultural identity struggles, and the internal tension between honoring family sacrifices and pursuing personal independence. I can also help you navigate life transitions, grief and loss, and family conflict. Through Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), Gestalt Therapy, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), I offer a warm, collaborative space for you to seek deeper understanding and meaningful change. Healing happens in connection with others, and together we can cultivate the path toward growth, resilience, and wholeness. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in California with 40 years of experience in the fields of addiction, domestic violence, and medical social work. In my years of experience, I've worked almost exclusively with adults individually and in groups who had difficulties managing their lives due to substance abuse and the concomitant mental health issues of depression and anxiety. I also facilitated groups of male and female substance abusers and perpetrators of domestic violence. In our groups, we focused on CBT lessons and exercises involving role play, modeling, and demonstrations. Clients were given homework to continue their learning and practice on their own between sessions. As a social worker working in public and private agencies, I worked with clients experiencing relationship issues, trauma, grief and loss, and day to day life problems. I strongly uphold the Social Workers Code of Ethics that includes, respecting the dignity and worth of a person and exercising compassion and a non-judgmental approach with each individual. I endorse and utilize multiple therapeutic techniques that include the following: psychodynamic techniques, cognitive behavioral techniques, motivational interviewing, person-centered techniques, and solution focused techniques. I am sensitive and respectful in using techniques that are agreed upon by the client and suitable to meet each individual's needs. I look forward to the opportunity to assist you in working through challenges that will help promote and maintain a better, happier and more peaceful life. My style is loving, compassionate and direct. If you just want someone to listen and not give you suggestions on how to improve your life, then I am not the right therapist for you! Most of my experience as a psychotherapist has been in treating individuals experiencing depression, anxiety, grief, loss, trauma, and other significant life changes (workplace stress, chronic illness, aging). I have worked in health and human services in different parts of California for the past 30 years. I have been a telehealth psychotherapist since 2021. Just before the pandemic I was working with people who needed support to find housing and provide for their basic needs, as well as people needing substance use treatment. As a social worker I have also worked with people experiencing trauma, chronic health conditions/disabilities, age-related circumstances and grief/loss. (Also, I have a good understanding of social services and mental health resources in the San Francisco Bay Area, especially Contra Costa County. In my free time I enjoy baking, hiking, playing with my Boston Terrier, Bruno, and between the months of March and October, I watch a lot of baseball (Go Giants!).

I believe life is made up of lessons—both good and difficult—and at times those lessons can feel overwhelming, confusing, and exhausting to navigate alone. Healing is a journey, and I recognize that meaningful change takes time. I dedicated myself to this field to remind others that our past does not define us, but is instead made up of experiences that can become opportunities for growth.
