I am a second career social worker, who graduated with my MSW in 2014 and my Ph.D. in 2019, both from the University of Houston’s Graduate College of Social Work. I am originally from New Orleans, Louisiana, but have lived in the Houston area for 30+ years. I decided to become a social worker because of my personal experiences raising a child with behavioral health issues and experiencing profound loss following the sudden death of my husband. My goals were to help others the way my own family had been helped, but I also hoped to improve the experiences of others with similar lived experiences but less positive outcomes. I have worked in a variety of settings, including West Oaks Hospital (a specialty psychiatric hospital) and its affiliated outpatient settings, where I provided individual, group, and family therapy to adults and adolescents experiencing significant mental health crises. I have also worked in home hospice care, assisting individuals and families with both pre-bereavement and post-bereavement support, and where I facilitated online support groups for caregivers and for individuals experiencing grief and bereavement. In addition to my private practice, I am an adjunct professor at the University of Houston’s Graduate College of Social Work, and I frequently consult with immigration lawyers about the ways in which mental health issues may impact the path to asylum or citizenship. I practice with a trauma-informed style and am always conscious of the ways in which trauma impacts the lives and experiences of individuals in all walks of life. I have experience working with people who live with ADHD, anxiety, autism, depression, and mood disorders generally. My goal is always to support my clients in achieving their own goals for a happier and healthier life.

My philosophy is simple - "There's no way out, but through". I offer a helping hand to my clients through life's disappointments, changes, challenges, and even outright catastrophes. My experience as a service member for over a decade brings a unique perspective to my practice. I see the therapeutic journey as similar to using a GPS. You're the driver, but your clinician is the GPS. You can choose where you want to go, but your clinician guides you to ensure you reach your destination. Together, we will explore your needs, and your perspective and learn more about you. Therapy is an investment you make for yourself, and it will benefit not only you but also your loved ones and the broader community by helping you become your best self.

"It's not the mountain that we conquer, but ourselves." - Sir Edmund Hillary As a mental health professional working with children, adolescents, and their families since 2021, an avid hiker for much longer, and a once at-risk teenager, I find that the quote above to reflects challenges we may face with mental health concerns. Sometimes in life, it can feel like you’re climbing uphill, breathing heavily, and hearing your heart thumping in your ears from the effort you’ve put in so far. The path ahead may look steep and winding, which can leave anyone’s internal compass spinning while navigating the path ahead. Like the different trails we can explore in the world, there are different challenges that we may encounter as individuals and families in life. For some, the mountain in their life may be adjusting to transitions in life, grief, or post-divorce, or the trail may challenge them to develop coping skills to manage the overwhelming feelings of anxiety, depression, or trauma. Other’s journeys may be shorter, needing to identify their strengths they can use to meet their challenges in life. On these varied trails, I have enjoyed walking alongside my clients and/or their families to while charting a path towards their goals in counseling. While my counseling approach is eclectic, drawing from strength-based, attachment theory, and solution-focused modalities, I rely on a foundation of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Dialectical Behavior Therapy in my work with clients.

After graduating, I began working in public education as a middle and high school counselor. I also worked for a tutoring company doing behavioral coaching for youth and for another private practice seeing clients of all ages. The human experience is not something that always works based on logic. Our brains are wonderful tools that can occasionally get stuck in a survival mode that leaves us feeling helpless and terrified. We can become stuck logical loops, anxious cycles, helpless before the fear of the unknown, or in a dark depression that stops us from continuing our previous goals and fun hobbies. Our past can be a reason for this. Sometimes it might be recent events at just the wrong time. It can even be a combination of small things that seemed to always shift never going away. My philosophy of treatment is to teach my clients how mind and body work so that they can make their choice in how they choose to live and interact with others. I am trained in EMDR, hypnosis, and IFS and apply all in working with PTSD, trauma, anxiety, depression and for pain management from physical illness. A person's mind is like a garden, cultivated or left to it's own devices it will always grow. When carefully tended it is a thing of beauty, but if left alone it is a mess of weeds. In understanding the thoughts and beliefs you have about the world and how you can shape them, you can learn to thrive. With a new perspective you can change everything.

Do you fear your relationship with your partner is losing its spark? Maybe you fear you’re losing them or that you’re not loveable, or maybe that you’re not good enough. Getting to the root cause of this can be scary, yet extremely beneficial. Whether its trauma from childhood or an experience as an adult, or perhaps from something you may not remember, our life experiences influence our current wellness and how we interact with others. At times, it can seem as if we’re all alone and that no one understands us. But when you come to therapy, you’ll have a safe space to heal and grow. I look forward to hearing from you to see how I could help you as a person, or the both of you as a couple. So if you’ve read this far, why not click and schedule? Hablo muy bien español.
