After more than 20 years of working with children and families in the school system, I now offer my services virtually in order to reach and support more people. Over the years, my work has expanded to include concerns such as anxiety, ADHD, depression, grief, stress management, life transitions, self-esteem, and other challenges that impact daily life. Navigating family and personal relationships is also a central focus of my therapy. My approach is creative, engaging, and intentionally different from traditional talk therapy. I strive to create a space where clients feel seen, empowered, and gently challenged to grow. Incorporating music, humor, and interactive activities can help reduce stress and make it easier to open up about difficult emotions. Hi, I'm Julie Este-McDonald — a Licensed Professional Counselor, Executive Coach, and doctoral candidate in Industrial/Organizational Psychology who researches burnout. I'm passionate about helping people heal, grow, and reconnect with who they are beneath the weight of everything they've been carrying. I work with adults navigating anxiety, depression, burnout, PTSD, life transitions, and the quiet exhaustion that comes from constantly holding it all together. I have a particular heart for women — and especially Black women — who are managing the layered demands of high achievement, caregiving, leadership, and everything in between. My approach is trauma-informed and attachment-aware, meaning I pay close attention not just to what you're experiencing, but to how your history has shaped the way you move through the world. I integrate Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help you examine the thought patterns influencing how you see yourself and others, and I bring warmth, honesty, and practical tools to every session. For clients who want faith to be part of the conversation, I'm also equipped to hold that space. With a post-graduate certificate in Pastoral Counseling, I support clients integrating spirituality into their healing — as well as those deconstructing or reimagining their relationship with faith altogether, including those navigating religious trauma. Whether you're brand new to therapy or returning to go deeper, my goal is simple: to create a space where you feel safe, genuinely seen, and supported in building a life that feels as good on the inside as it may already look on the outside.

I approach therapy as a relational process, not a place where you come to be fixed. You’re not a problem to solve; you’re a person with a history, patterns that make sense, and a way of being in the world that developed for a reason. In our work together, we slow things down and get curious about what’s underneath the surface. I’m interested in who you are, not just what’s wrong. My goal is to create a space that feels real, thoughtful, and nonjudgmental, where you can begin to understand yourself more deeply and move toward something that feels more connected and meaningful.

I’m passionate about walking with people as they navigate healing, growth, and self-discovery—especially those in communities that have often been overlooked or underserved. My journey to becoming a therapist has been shaped by a variety of roles: school teacher, parole officer, child protective services investigator, state benefits worker, and therapy aide for individuals with brain injuries. Each experience deepened my understanding of resilience, empathy, and the importance of community connection. In our work together, no concern is “too small.” This is your space to feel seen, heard, and supported as you sort through the things that matter most to you. I see therapy as a collaborative process—we’ll work together to explore your strengths, challenges, and goals, at a pace that feels right for you. My counseling style is flexible and eclectic, pulling from different therapeutic approaches to fit your needs. Whether we’re focusing on reflection, problem-solving, or new ways of coping, the goal is to create a plan that feels authentic and useful to you. I consider it an honor to be part of your journey and look forward to supporting you along the way.

As a therapist, I believe therapy should feel like a real conversation, not a lecture, interrogation, or a checklist. My approach is supportive, honest, and focused on helping you understand how your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors are connected so you can start making changes that actually stick. I create a space where you can be open about what you're going through without feeling judged, but I’ll also ask thoughtful questions, point out patterns you may not have noticed, and help you look at situations from new angles so we can figure out what’s actually keeping you stuck. In our work together, some sessions may focus on building coping skills or setting goals, while others may be about processing experiences and gaining clarity. I try to meet clients where they are while still helping them move toward meaningful progress. If you’re looking for a therapist who is supportive but also honest, engaged, and focused on helping you grow, we’ll likely work well together.

I am Dr. Lawana J. Mabry, LCSW-BACS. I earned my undergraduate degree in Sociology with a concentration in Criminology in 2003 from Louisiana State University. I returned to LSU to obtain my Master of Social Work. I later obtained my Doctor of Behavioral Health degree from Arizona State University. I am a Licensed Mental Health Provider with an array of hands-on clinical experience, which includes, but is not limited to the Department of Children and Family Services (foster care and family services), hospital social work, inpatient psychiatric social work, and school social work. I was also the Clinical Director of an outpatient behavioral health agency with locations throughout the state of Louisiana for five years. For the most recent six years, I have been offering individual psychotherapy, family, and couple counseling to clients in Louisiana and Mississippi via my private practice and contract work. I work with children and families starting at age 5. They value the benefit of my flexible work hours because it decreases the amount of time they have to miss from work and/or school to attend their appointments and remain consistent in treatment. The virtual sessions are also beneficial because clients do not have to fight traffic, have access to transportation, find a sitter for the children, etc. in order to attend therapy. Instead, they have the luxury of attending via their device and at their convenience.
