I am a licensed therapist with a background in clinical leadership, having served in management and director-level roles overseeing behavioral health programs. I have extensive experience working with individuals with severe mental illness, including those in high-acuity settings, where I’ve been responsible for program development, clinical oversight, and supporting multidisciplinary teams to deliver effective, ethical care. Throughout my career, I’ve worked in a range of settings including community mental health, managed care, and structured treatment programs, where I supported large patient populations and helped implement systems focused on outcomes, stability, and continuity of care. This experience has shaped my ability to work with complex clinical presentations, crisis situations, and individuals navigating significant life disruption. In my clinical work, I help clients who are facing anxiety, depression, trauma, and existential concerns—especially those struggling with questions of meaning, identity, and direction. I integrate evidence-based approaches like ACT, CBT, DBT, and attachment-based therapy to provide both practical tools and deeper, insight-oriented work. My style is direct, collaborative, and grounded. I bring both clinical expertise and real-world leadership experience into the therapy space, helping clients move toward meaningful, sustainable change.

I’m Philip A. Bower, a licensed clinical social worker and founder of Philip A Bower, LICSW, a gay veteran-owned psychotherapy practice. I provide telehealth therapy for adults from early adulthood through later life in Massachusetts, Maine, and Washington. I specialize in anxiety, LGBTQIA+ concerns, men’s mental health, trauma, depression, identity exploration, and life transitions. I also work with clients navigating sexual identity, polyamory, kink, geek culture, spiritual exploration, stress, shame, relationship challenges, and the pressure of living in roles that no longer fit. My approach is evidence-based, holistic, affirming, and human. I draw from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (M-CBT), mindfulness, self-compassion mindfulness, and polyvagal-informed techniques. I tailor therapy to each person’s needs, goals, and lived experience rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach. I believe therapy can help with both symptom relief and deeper change. That may mean reducing anxiety, improving coping skills, processing trauma, building self-understanding, strengthening relationships, or moving toward a life that feels more authentic, self-defined, and whole. I aim to offer therapy that feels grounded, thoughtful, and real. You do not need to have everything figured out before you begin. If you are looking for affirming, trauma-informed therapy that makes room for complexity and helps you move toward the person you want to become, I may be a good fit.

I'm not just a therapist. I'm a coffee enthusiast who starts each day with a pour-over and a quiet moment before the world wakes up. I'm an outdoor lover who believes fresh air and moving my body are non-negotiable whether that's a hike, 4x4ing, hitting the resort/ backcountry, a walk with the family, or just standing in the backyard feeling the sun. And I'm a family man. A partner. A parent. Someone who knows what it's like to be pulled in ten directions and still want to show up fully for the people around me. That life outside the office isn't separate from my work. It's what keeps me refreshed, grounded, and able to come back to this chair with presence and energy. I don't just talk about balance I live it, imperfectly and intentionally. The work I've done reflects that same groundedness. I've been shaped by a wide range of experiences: residential treatment settings where the stakes were high and the progress was hard-won. Outpatient practice where life happens between sessions jobs, kids, marriages, breakdowns and breakthroughs. I've sat with clients across the entire lifespan, from geriatric patients navigating legacy and loss to teens just beginning to ask who they are. That breadth taught me something: suffering doesn't discriminate by age, and neither does healing. Whether you're sixteen or sixty, whether you're processing trauma or just trying to feel less alone, the fundamentals are the same. You want to be seen. You want to be understood. And you want a way forward that actually fits your life. That's what I'm here for.

I am a licensed psychotherapist specializing in supporting my clients out of their distress, unhelpful thinking, and dysfunctional behavior toward healthier beliefs about themselves, others, and the world around them. My eclectic strengths-based approach draws upon the best evidence-based practices of solution-focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. It is an approach that has helped individuals find healing and well-being that leads to a life worth living and celebrating. This is so not only for oneself but for your loved ones, family, friends, work associates and community. A powerful moment in therapy says it best when a client shared, “Working with you is like sculpting a block of marble. Every time I am ready to process with you a past traumatic experience, it is like chipping off a flake of stone. Slowly but surely, the sculpting brings about the best version of me.” Another powerful moment was when a client said, "I was lost in the forest with night approaching, then you appeared and like a sign post, pointed the way out." So whether your mental health recovery work entails healing from past trauma exposure, overcoming unwanted intrusive thinking, taming anxiety, lifting your depression, stabilizing your moods, increasing your distress tolerance, accomplishing emotional regulation, or simply achieving greater personal effectiveness at work or at home, you will learn to shape and form yourself into the person you truly want to be emotionally and psychologically.

I work with clients who are thoughtful, introspective, and motivated to better understand themselves but may feel stuck in patterns of anxiety, self-criticism, or uncertainty about their direction in life. Many people I work with are navigating questions related to identity, relationships, purpose, or major life transitions. My goal is to help clients gain clarity about the patterns influencing their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors so they can move forward with greater confidence and intention. My approach integrates evidence-based therapies including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). These approaches help clients identify unhelpful thought patterns, develop emotional regulation skills, and build practical strategies that improve daily functioning. I also incorporate narrative and reflective techniques that allow clients to explore the personal stories and experiences that shape how they see themselves and the choices they make. An important part of my work involves helping clients move beyond insight and into meaningful action. Therapy often includes identifying automatic thought patterns, practicing grounding and emotional regulation strategies, and experimenting with new behaviors that align with a client’s values and long-term goals. I also use structured check-ins and evidence-based tools to track progress over time. By regularly reviewing mood patterns, emotional changes, and skill development, clients are able to see measurable progress while staying focused on what matters most to them. Clients often describe my approach as collaborative, thoughtful, and practical. Together, we create a space where clients can reflect deeply on their experiences while also developing the tools needed to navigate challenges, build resilience, and create meaningful change in their lives.

I have a Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision from Ohio University, a masters degree in Clinical Rehabilitation and Mental Health counseling from UNC-Chapel Hill, and a bachelors of science degree in psychology from North Carolina State University. I have always found it to be a powerful tool in allowing me to process my thoughts and feelings, both about my past and my future. Frequently asked questions

Why filter by Washington rather than a city like Seattle?

When looking for online therapy, you can see anyone that is credentialed in Washington. We want you to find the best fit, therefore, Grow Therapy shows available therapists across Washington from Spokane to Tacoma! If you’d rather see someone in-person, you can change the filter from virtual and find a therapist near you in Washington.

Will my therapist take insurance?

When booking you’ll be asked to verify with your Member ID. However, if you don’t have any of the insurances available you can select cash. Our therapists will have their cost of appointment on their profile. Individual session costs will vary.

How does the Specialty Filter work? Can I find a therapist that focuses on a specific issue?

The specialty filter is optional. You don’t need to check any boxes to see a provider. However, fit is very important when selecting an online therapist. If you have knowledge or experience to recognize what specialties you may need.

Why use Gender, Age, and Identities filters?

Finding a provider with a similar life experience can be beneficial because it can be easier to establish rapport and potentially be understood quicker and clearer.

What happens during the first therapy session?

Your first therapy session is for you and your therapist to meet each other and to ask any questions that you have about the counseling process. This is where you can expect your therapist to do the same as they will ask questions to gain insight into your specific situation. In this first session the therapist is doing their part to gather as much information so they can better assess if they are able to meet your therapeutic needs. Depending upon your provider's specialty, you may also discuss the methods the therapist will use. For additional information on therapy methods, please visit the Grow Therapy Help Center. Some people feel nervous before their first appointment, and that is totally normal! Coming prepared with a list of questions for your therapist may help. Remember, you're taking a brave step by seeking therapy, and it is okay to be nervous as you try something new.
