Hi, I'm Marla. My goal in counseling is to create a safe and affirming space where clients can explore their true selves and needs with openness and support. Personal growth can bring awareness to what parts of ourselves need to be nurtured, accepted, healed, and supported. I saw how using experience, strength, hope, and empathy could bring about significant and insightful changes in a person’s way of life. So, let's work together to change your life! As someone who has lived their life in the gray area, often not fitting into socially created boxes, I’ve learned a lot about the importance of making space for all of my client’s identities, roles, and experiences in counseling. I am a sex-positive therapist skilled in the areas of sexuality and relationship structure minorities including consensual non-monogamy, BDSM/kink, leather, and those who practice alternative spiritualities. My specialization also includes anxiety, depression, trauma, and other mood disorders, as well as addictions including gaming and gambling. I enjoy working with those in recovery, using both my clinical skills and my lived experience. I received my Master of Education in Agency and Community Counseling from Xavier University in Cincinnati, OH, and currently hold an active Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC-S) license and Licensed Independent Chemical Dependency Counselor Supervisor (LICDC-CS) in Ohio. I am in the process of obtaining my endorsement in disordered gambling. To further support my clients, I am also pursuing my certification from the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH). I believe in the power of creating a therapeutic environment where you can feel seen, heard, and understood. You are in charge! Together, we can navigate the complexities of your experiences and work towards meaningful change. If you're ready to take the next step, I'm here to support you on your journey.

I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in the state of Washington and began my education at the University of Washington receiving a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology. I went on to receive a Master of Arts Degree in Clinical Psychology from Argosy University in Seattle, Washington. After spending 8 years in the United States Army, I felt I could continue to serve my community and country by more intimately assisting those in need. I wanted to first understand "why do people do the things they do?" and second, learn how to help those people use their freedom to enjoy the life they want to live. I have worked in the mental health and social services field since 2008 with experiences that range from being a Court Appointed Special Advocate for children, a Behavioral Support Specialist for youth with disabilities and at-risk youth, a Child and Family Therapist, and an Adult Therapist for adults with serious (chronic) mental illness and substance use. I have been in private practice since 2019 continuing to help individuals and families with a variety of mental health needs.

Frequently asked questions

Why filter by Washington rather than a city like Seattle?

When looking for online therapy, you can see anyone that is credentialed in the state. We want you to find the best fit, therefore, Grow Therapy shows available therapists across Washington from Spokane to Tacoma! If you’d rather see someone in-person, you can change the filter from virtual and find a therapist near you in Washington.

Will my therapist take insurance?

When booking you’ll be asked to verify with your Member ID. However, if you don’t have any of the insurances available you can select cash. Our therapists will have their cost of appointment on their profile. Individual session costs will vary.

How does the Specialty Filter work? Can I find a therapist that focuses on a specific issue?

The specialty filter is optional. You don’t need to check any boxes to see a provider. However, fit is very important when selecting an online therapist. If you have knowledge or experience to recognize what specialties you may need.

What are the "Clients say I'm" badges?

Grow Therapy asks patients about their experience with therapists after they have had a certain number of sessions. After enough responses, we add those characteristics to their profiles to help you find the best online therapists for you. We're still working on collecting this information from all our therapists.

Why use Gender, Age, and Identities filters?

Finding a provider with a similar life experience can be beneficial because it can be easier to establish rapport and potentially be understood quicker and clearer.

What to expect during your first session?

Your first therapy session is for you and your therapist to meet each other and to ask any questions that you have about the counseling process. This is where you can expect your therapist to do the same as they will ask questions to gain insight into your specific situation. In this first session the therapist is doing their part to gather as much information so they can better assess if they are able to meet your therapeutic needs.

Depending upon your provider's specialty, you may also discuss the methods the therapist will use. For additional information on therapy methods, please visit the Grow Therapy Help Center. Some people feel nervous before their first appointment, and that is totally normal! Coming prepared with a list of questions for your therapist may help. Remember, you're taking a brave step by seeking therapy, and it is okay to be nervous as you try something new.
