My name is Cody Brumbelow. I have been a counselor now for 5 years, both in schools and with individuals clinically. I graduated from UT in Chattanooga, TN and have been working with clients in Washington State virtually ever since. Clients with any presenting concerns or diagnoses are welcome to work with me. Adults with depression, anxiety, trauma, and problems with self-concept have been the core of my work.

Get to know me

In our first session together, here's what you can expect

The first session simply consists of getting to know each other and gaining some background information. From there, we can set goals and discuss a general plan and expectations. As is the case with all of my sessions, this will be laid back and at your own pace. From the start, I like to be transparent and genuine.

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

My approach is unique in that it could be considered a dying art. Modern counseling can be very clinical and scientific. This has wonderful benefits and should be implemented, but loses the foundational core aspect of counseling. Meeting someone as human and building the right relationship is the key factor for client growth and change. This should be the primary approach of counseling in my opinion and is how I show up for my clients.

The clients I'm best positioned to serve

My ideal client is someone looking to change and grow, someone that wants to be the best version of themselves in a holistic manner. This person can show up as they are, whether it's deep concerns or mostly doing well. Deep at my core, I would like to believe I can work with anyone regarding any potential concern. This is based in my approach to counseling, one that is adapted to each client and relies upon the belief that everyone has the capability to take control of their life and drive towards their own growth and best version of themselves.

My treatment methods

Person-centered (Rogerian)

Person-centered therapy is my baseline theory for how clients grow and change. It focuses on the client as the main source of direction, based upon the concerns they express. Listening intently and reflectively to my clients, I try to understand them and enter their world as closely as possible. While doing so, I show genuine interest and care towards them while also being a real, vulnerable human in my own presentation. This ideally creates an environment maximized for safety and change, allowing clients to grow in their own individual way.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

I use this method as a primary, direct source of interventions and techniques. Reframing and challenging thought patterns can be a very affective way of making quick changes to both behaviors and a person's internal experiencing.

Psychodynamic

The sub-conscious is vast and control much more of our thoughts and behavior than we realize. Finding insights and new connections from this domain can be critical in changing behaviors and thought patterns.

Narrative

As I have gained experience over the last few years, the importance of narratives and scripts that we operate on lives under has grown in significant importance to me. Old narratives can be resilient and hard to discover, much less challenge. In another form, using stories and narratives as descriptors of life can create powerful imagery and solidification of concerns that are hard to nail down.
