Clifford Porter, MA, MEd Licensed Professional Counselor | Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor, Author With over 18 years of experience in behavioral health and addiction, I specialize in guiding individuals through challenges such as substance use disorders, depression, anxiety, relationship concerns, and sleep disturbances. My career in counseling began in 1990, leading me to earn a master's degree in counseling and gain extensive experience across outpatient and inpatient treatment settings, behavioral health programs, and hospital environments. Throughout my career, I have collaborated with medical teams to support patients facing psychiatric conditions, substance-related disorders, and behavioral health challenges. Additionally, I have worked alongside Pain Management teams to assess and differentiate patients' pain experiences from drug-seeking behaviors. Beyond direct clinical practice, I serve as a professor of counseling-related courses at a local college, where I am dedicated to training and mentoring future professionals in the field. My commitment to multicultural counseling stems from my time in the Air Force, where I had the privilege of working with diverse individuals from various backgrounds. This invaluable experience has shaped my approach, allowing me to provide culturally responsive and insightful care across a broad spectrum of client needs. I view therapy as a collaborative process—one that acknowledges your life experiences, relational dynamics, and personal beliefs that shape your worldview. My goal is to create a safe, supportive space for self-exploration, growth, and meaningful change. Trained in a range of evidence-based treatment models, I tailor my approach to align with your unique needs, ensuring a personalized and effective therapeutic experience. During our initial meeting, we will assess your concerns and determine the best path forward together. Throughout our work, we will periodically evaluate progress and discuss whether continued sessions, adjustments, or outside referrals may be beneficial.

I work with individuals who feel overwhelmed, stuck, or weighed down by anxiety, depression, ADHD, trauma, or life transitions. You may find yourself overthinking, struggling to sleep, feeling disconnected from others, or carrying emotional pain that feels hard to explain or manage alone. I provide a supportive, nonjudgmental space where we can make sense of what you’re going through and begin to create meaningful change. Using evidence-based approaches, I help clients build healthier coping skills, process difficult experiences, and regain a sense of control, clarity, and confidence—so you can start feeling more like yourself again and move forward with greater ease.

Frequently asked questions

Why filter by Texas rather than a city like Dallas?

When looking for online therapy, you can see anyone that is credentialed in Texas. We want you to find the best fit, therefore, Grow Therapy shows available therapists across Texas from Houston to Austin! If you’d rather see someone in-person, you can change the filter from virtual and find a therapist near you in Texas.

Will my therapist take insurance?

When booking you’ll be asked to verify with your Member ID. However, if you don’t have any of the insurances available you can select cash. Our therapists will have their cost of appointment on their profile. Individual session costs will vary.

How does the Specialty Filter work? Can I find a therapist that focuses on a specific issue?

The specialty filter is optional. You don’t need to check any boxes to see a provider. However, fit is very important when selecting an online therapist. If you have knowledge or experience to recognize what specialties you may need.

Why use Gender, Age, and Identities filters?

Finding a provider with a similar life experience can be beneficial because it can be easier to establish rapport and potentially be understood quicker and clearer.

What happens during the first therapy session?

Your first therapy session is for you and your therapist to meet each other and to ask any questions that you have about the counseling process. This is where you can expect your therapist to do the same as they will ask questions to gain insight into your specific situation. In this first session the therapist is doing their part to gather as much information so they can better assess if they are able to meet your therapeutic needs. Depending upon your provider's specialty, you may also discuss the methods the therapist will use. For additional information on therapy methods, please visit the Grow Therapy Help Center. Some people feel nervous before their first appointment, and that is totally normal! Coming prepared with a list of questions for your therapist may help. Remember, you're taking a brave step by seeking therapy, and it is okay to be nervous as you try something new.
