Hello! Taking the first step to seek assistance in getting help with your current situation is a big step. Counseling can be anxiety provoking because sometimes it is hard to know how to express feelings because they have been buried for so long, or so much is going on that it is hard to know what to prioritize. My sessions are intended to be 4-8 sessions and solution focused to focus on gaining life skills to deal with current work-life stresses, interpersonal social skills, and other current issues clients are experiencing. I commend you on taking the first step in looking into getting therapy. If you are experiencing a mental health emergency call 911 or go to your nearest ER. Should you need intensive therapy due to your specific need, consider local in person therapy as the best fit for your counseling needs.

Are you someone who finds yourself feeling unseen or misunderstood in traditional therapy settings? Have you noticed that standard, “one-size-fits-all” approaches don't align with your cultural identities, needs, and experiences? If so, you are in the right place, and I’m so happy you’re here. I’m Kamaria :) I’m an intuitive, decolonized, and depth-oriented therapist who enjoys helping people connect with themselves. My practice is built on anti-oppressive and decolonial values, and centers Black/Brown people, as well as LGBTQ+, neurodiverse, and liberatory-focused individuals across all backgrounds. I combine clinical techniques, social awareness, and ancestral healing wisdoms to create a culturally-attuned and systemically-informed healing space - one which allows you to express authentically, and does not require you to code-switch, mask, or defend/abandon the identities, needs, values, or experiences integral to your existence. I take a humanistic, collaborative approach and pull from a diverse set of modalities that honor where you’re at, and help us move closer to who you truly are and where you want to be. I’m not here to pathologize you or your experiences, or convince you that I have all the answers. I’m here to walk alongside you as you connect further with yourself, develop awareness as the expert of your own life, and define wellness on your own terms.

Welcome my friends. I’m a combat veteran and retired Army officer, a devout Christian, husband, father, grandfather, and experienced clinical psychologist. I want to get into the root causes of your battle and find ways to overcome, change, forgive, accept, and move upward toward the light. It may not seem like it, but the darkness will eventually lift, and the light will surely shine again. Life is a battle in the heart, and I humbly accept that I will be in my own battle or someone else’s battle for the rest of my life. Like the weather, our emotions are powerful. Many days the sun shines, but the rains do come and sometimes a destructive storm hits hard (divorce, the loss of a loved one, cancer, suicidal thoughts, et cetera). It's a battlefield. When it comes to the challenge of relationships, so often, it is ego (pride), self-esteem, and powerful emotions at the root of our conflicts. To understand these forces is the key to peace. Let's work through it! I have been honored to be in the field of psychology for 20 years since 2004. Through the years, more than half of my time was in the Army where I primarily worked with soldiers enduring anxiety, depression, trauma, Traumatic Brain Injury, and all the other usual suspects of psychological distress. It is time well spent to analyze our guilt, fear, worry, shame, pain, heartbreak, addiction, identity conflicts, and sorrow. I’ve also worked in the prisons for many years with some extreme situations (i.e., murder, severe mental illness, rape, child molestation, drug kingpins, gang leaders). So, no matter what your circumstances are, never quit and never give up! Survival is a noble plight!

Frequently asked questions

Why filter by Kentucky rather than a city like Louisville?

When looking for online therapy, you can see anyone that is credentialed in Kentucky. We want you to find the best fit, therefore, Grow Therapy shows available therapists across Kentucky from Bowling Green to Lexington! If you’d rather see someone in-person, you can change the filter from virtual and find a therapist near you in Kentucky.

Will my therapist take insurance?

When booking you’ll be asked to verify with your Member ID. However, if you don’t have any of the insurances available you can select cash. Our therapists will have their cost of appointment on their profile. Individual session costs will vary.

How does the Specialty Filter work? Can I find a therapist that focuses on Spirituality?

The specialty filter is optional. You don’t need to check any boxes to see a provider. However, fit is very important when selecting an online therapist. If you have knowledge or experience to recognize what specialties you may need. For example, your selected specialty, Spirituality, is filtering therapists in Kentucky that work with patients with similar concerns.

Why use Gender, Age, and Identities filters?

Finding a provider with a similar life experience can be beneficial because it can be easier to establish rapport and potentially be understood quicker and clearer.

What happens during the first therapy session?

Your first therapy session is for you and your therapist to meet each other and to ask any questions that you have about the counseling process. This is where you can expect your therapist to do the same as they will ask questions to gain insight into your specific situation. In this first session the therapist is doing their part to gather as much information so they can better assess if they are able to meet your therapeutic needs. Depending upon your provider's specialty, you may also discuss the methods the therapist will use. For additional information on therapy methods, please visit the Grow Therapy Help Center. Some people feel nervous before their first appointment, and that is totally normal! Coming prepared with a list of questions for your therapist may help. Remember, you're taking a brave step by seeking therapy, and it is okay to be nervous as you try something new.
