Life isn’t always sunshine and rainbows; it can be filled with challenges, difficulties, and hardships. I believe that life is all about perspective and the way we react to problems. Our trials and tribulations are opportunities for us to grow into stronger and wiser individuals. When challenges arise, most people ask, "Why?" I encourage my clients to change their mentality by asking, "How?"—how can I use this to grow and learn, make myself smarter and wiser?" I am a firm believer in empowering clients with the tools and knowledge needed to live a more fulfilling and productive life. With 8 years of sobriety and personal experience battling my own challenges, I know how helpful therapy can be in helping a person rebuild their life and become the person they want to be.

Are you struggling to find a therapist that fits your unique needs? Do you feel unheard? If so, we might be a good fit. I work collaboratively with clients to work together toward the treatment goals that you find important. I practice in a non-judgemental manner and embrace starting "where the client is". Connection, rapport, and the ability to feel comfortable are part of our work together. I hope that clients feel my acceptance and connection from the first interaction. Working together, we set up mutually agreed-upon goals to work together on your unique needs. We work day to day to help improve the quality and authenticity of your life's work, relationships, past, and current/future goals. I have a range of "tools in my toolbox" since treatment is not one size fits all. You are the guide to have the ultimate choice for what is working in our treatment together and what can be improved upon. It is my job to listen and to assist in your therapy success.

I received my Masters from Western Kentucky University, and have been practicing for 28 years. My ideal client is scared to reach out right now, is scared of being judged, and is nervous that they will get stuck with a therapist who just keeps asking, "And how does that make you feel?".Are you feeling overwhelmed, feeling like you can't breathe, getting tightness in your chest, or worrying a lot? Do you feel hopeless, as if life is never in your favor? Do people not understand your issues or tell you that you’re overreacting? Everything is just fine. Do you have a relationship that is struggling, thinking about divorce, or possibly an affair? Are you working with your identity (gender, shape, image)? Do you feel like everything has to be perfect, or do you feel angry or upset? Do you get stressed and have poor coping skills? If any of this is what you're going through, I can help you get relief.

My name is Michael Starr, and I am a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker. I believe therapy is more than just problem-solving, it’s a place to rediscover who you are, heal what’s been hidden, and move forward with clarity and strength. I work with individuals, couples, and families facing anxiety, trauma, relationship challenges, identity questions, and emotional overwhelm. My style is honest, grounded, and deeply respectful of the human experience. I use evidence-based approaches like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Trauma-Focused CBT, but I also hold space for what cannot always be explained, your story, your meaning, your growth. Clients often come to me feeling stuck, disconnected, or unsure of how to move forward. Together, we uncover the patterns keeping you there and build the insight, skills, and resilience to move through them. You won’t be rushed or judged. You’ll be heard, supported, and challenged when needed. You don’t have to have all the answers. You just have to be willing to start. Healing begins with one honest conversation, and I’m here to take that step with you.

Frequently asked questions

Why filter by Kentucky rather than a city like Louisville?

When looking for online therapy, you can see anyone that is credentialed in the state. We want you to find the best fit, therefore, Grow Therapy shows available therapists across Kentucky from Bowling Green to Lexington! If you’d rather see someone in-person, you can change the filter from virtual and find a therapist near you in Kentucky.

Will my therapist take insurance?

When booking you’ll be asked to verify with your Member ID. However, if you don’t have any of the insurances available you can select cash. Our therapists will have their cost of appointment on their profile. Individual session costs will vary.

How does the Specialty Filter work? Can I find a therapist that focuses on ADHD?

The specialty filter is optional. You don’t need to check any boxes to see a provider. However, fit is very important when selecting an online therapist. If you have knowledge or experience to recognize what specialties you may need. For example, your selected specialty, ADHD, is filtering therapists in Kentucky that work with patients with similar concerns.

Why use Gender, Age, and Identities filters?

Finding a provider with a similar life experience can be beneficial because it can be easier to establish rapport and potentially be understood quicker and clearer.

What to expect during your first session?

Your first therapy session is for you and your therapist to meet each other and to ask any questions that you have about the counseling process. This is where you can expect your therapist to do the same as they will ask questions to gain insight into your specific situation. In this first session the therapist is doing their part to gather as much information so they can better assess if they are able to meet your therapeutic needs.

Depending upon your provider's specialty, you may also discuss the methods the therapist will use. For additional information on therapy methods, please visit the Grow Therapy Help Center. Some people feel nervous before their first appointment, and that is totally normal! Coming prepared with a list of questions for your therapist may help. Remember, you're taking a brave step by seeking therapy, and it is okay to be nervous as you try something new.
