Hi there, I am Joanna
Have you ever gone to therapy and found it hard to open up because the sessions appear rigid and impersonal, and maybe you felt judged? In my practice is my goal to lead sessions in a non-judgmental way, with the belief that clients are the experts in their own lives. I like to describe my relationship with clients as a relationship among equals. My role in the session is to help you process some of the challenges you are experiencing and offer skills that can help create the change you want to see in your life. My theoretical orientation is dialectical behavioral therapy and I try to hold the balance between acceptance and change, this means accepting that although things might be difficult at this moment we can learn new behaviors so life can be improved. My goal is to help clients increase their overall satisfaction in life and relationships. I am also trained in trauma work to help clients process traumatic experiences.
Do you feel stuck in some part of your life and want to feel more confident, at ease, and connected? I am here to help you to break through anxiety, symptoms of depression, personal and generational trauma, and other challenges you might be encountering that make it hard to be true to yourself or cause relationship issues.
In therapy, we will work collaboratively to help you reach your goals. Sometimes this can look like developing coping skills to handle stress more easily so you can move forward, learning your limits and setting priorities to maintain strong boundaries, or becoming a great communicator so you can actively practice how to speak, listen, and be heard.
Whatever you are struggling with, I will provide a safe, judgment-free space in which you can comfortably be yourself. I will guide you in finding harmony and fulfillment so that you can feel understood, find a sense of belonging, and have healthy relationships.

Life can be complicated, and sometimes we find ourselves in places we never expected to be. Maybe you're feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or frustrated with patterns in your life or relationships. Maybe you have a pretty good idea of what's not working, but figuring out what to do differently is another story. Or maybe you're not quite sure what's going on, you just know something needs to change.
Whatever brings you to therapy, you don't have to have it all figured out before you start.
I offer online therapy for adults throughout California. We all need and deserve to feel seen, heard, understood, and accepted for who we are. Having a place where you can talk openly, sort through your thoughts and feelings, and explore parts of yourself you may not have had room for before can be incredibly powerful.
Finding the right therapist is personal. Sometimes you just get a feeling that someone is a good fit, and I encourage you to trust that. Whether that's with me or someone else, you deserve to find a connection where you feel comfortable being yourself.
I believe that we all deserve a safe space to process our experiences, and my primary goal is to provide you that space. I provide a person-centered approach that emphasizes helping my clients build self-compassion, as I believe that it is only from a place of self-compassion that we can feel grounded within ourselves enough to develop a compassionate relationship with others around us. My approach is warm, down-to-earth, trauma informed, and practical, and I believe that we are all on a healing journey and see myself as a fellow traveler. It is an honor to walk by your side

Hello,
I was born and raised in Stockton, California. I enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps at the age of 17 and in 1997, after 25 yeas of service, I retired from the Marine Corps as a Master Sergeant. After retiring from the Marine Corps, I worked as a Farrier (Horseshoer), as well as a structural welder (Ironworker), as those were the most marketable skill that I had. I came to a point where old injuries came back to haunt me and I could no longer walk (several years later, thanks to a surgery through the VA, I can walk again; thankful for that).
At this point, I changed professions and out of a desire to work with veterans, I returned to school, accomplishing all that was necessary to become a licensed counselor. I spent another career working for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, specifically as a counselor in the Readjustment Counseling Service (Vet Center). I recently retired from the Vet Center and now I work part-time here with Grow Therapy.
As a retired Marine senior staff Non-Commissioned Officer (SNCO) and disabled combat veteran myself, the Vet Center was the perfect job. Vet Centers provide readjustment counseling to combat veterans and provide counseling to survivors of military sexual trauma (MST). Vet Centers also provide group counseling, bereavement counseling and couples counseling when this is determined to be of support to the veteran.
Readjustment counseling many times consists of treating/addressing symptoms related to post-traumatic stress (PTSD), I.e., anxiety, depression, exaggerated startle response, hypervigilance, sleep disturbance, etc. Many veterans go on to work as first responders and working with many first responders as well as medical personal, has provided me with a great deal of additional experience.
I am authentic genuine, warm, direct and client centered. I have worked in Residential treatment centers, conducted risk assessments in hospital settings , worked in skilled nursing facilities , worked as a Program Director and have experience working with families, couples and individuals. I believe in the field and am excited for every interaction and opportunity when individuals show up for themselves. I am honored to join in the journey to aid with tools to assist with living life from a place of abundance and courage.

I use a variety of approaches in my work, depending on the needs of my clients, including client-centered cognitive behavioral with a psychodynamic perspective and mindfulness.
I believe self-exploration is an investment in you and your future. When we pay attention to our thoughts and feelings with kindness and compassion, we gain insight and understanding of our authentic selves. I work with adults from ages 18 to 100 on a wide range of issues, including anxiety, stress, and life transitions. I am also trained as a transformational life coach.
