I'm Dr. Randy Speyer, and I can help you and your relationships grow, deepen, and thrive. Specializing in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), an attachment-based approach for working with individuals, couples, and families, I find this work to be deeply meaningful and fulfilling. Empowering people to move from pain and distress to healing and wholeness, from disconnection to reconnection, from struggling to thriving, is a transforming experience to be a part of. And it's being part of this kind of growth and change that feeds my soul and brings me joy. In 1998, I graduated from Fuller's Graduate School of Psychology in Pasadena, California with a Ph.D. in Marital & Family Therapy, and have received advanced training directly from Dr. Sue Johnson, the founder of Emotional Focused Therapy, as well as other prominent clinicians in the discipline. In addition to providing individual, couples, and family therapy for over 20 years as a licensed marriage and family therapist in the state of California, I also provide consultation, and conduct workshops and trainings on a wide range of issues related to psychological, emotional, and spiritual health and well-being.

Get to know me

In our first session together, here's what you can expect

I place a high priority in forming a relationship with you that is deeply imbedded in trust and collaboration. Our initial session will provide an opportunity to get to know each other a little better. I welcome questions about my approach, my experience as a therapist, and what you can expect from working with me. I will also ask you more about what brings you to seek therapy and what you hope to gain from our time together. This initial session is an opportunity to see if we are a good fit to move forward together. If we decide to move forward together, we will schedule regular weekly or biweekly appointments, depending on your treatment needs and goals. I base each session on who you are and what you need.

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) can help identify and address the obvious and not-so-obvious patterns in life, such as repeatedly engaging in unsatisfying relationships, finding oneself alienated and alone, or having difficulty following through with life or career goals. For Couples, EFT can help you identify and step out of painful negative cycles and find your way back to your partner to create a strong and secure emotional and intimate bond.

The clients I'm best positioned to serve

Relationships have a profound impact on every area of our lives. A sense of meaningful connection is vital for overall well-being, as it offers support, a sense of belonging, and enhances both mental and physical health. It can reduce stress, increase happiness, and even extend your life. A healthy relationship is a primary source of purpose and fulfillment. On the other hand, distressed relationships can often result in increased anxiety, depression, and stress. Frequent criticism, blame, or feelings of inadequacy stemming from a disconnected relationship can erode confidence and self-esteem. This can often cause individuals to pull back from social interactions, leading to feelings of loneliness, and frequently despair. Working with a wise, skilled, and supportive therapist can help you identify areas in your life and relationships where you seem lost or tend to get stuck, or help you to express and understand the pain or distress you're going through. You don't have to stay in a place of feeling alienated or all alone. Therapy can provide the new experiences, deeper insight, and helpful tools to provide the meaningful changes in your life that will bring you personal growth and renewed hope.

My treatment methods

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)

I have completed all the required training for certification in Emotionally Focused Therapy. I have used this treatment method for over ten years helping individuals, couples, and families improve their relational bonds by identifying, understanding, and transforming their negative interactional patterns. This evidence-based approach will help you learn to regulate your emotions, strengthen your relational connections, and enhance your overall sense of well-being.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

The way you think significantly impacts your feelings, behaviors, and well-being. I utilize this treatment method to help you identify and change negative or unhelpful patterns of thinking that can significantly contribute to stress, anxiety, depression, and addictive behaviors inhibiting your resilience, healthy coping skills, and overall happiness and success in life.

Motivational Interviewing

Motivational Interviewing is a person-centered, non-confrontational approach that helps you identify barriers that hinder positive change. I have successfully utilized this approach for over 20 years in helping clients address addictive or maladaptive behaviors, as well as assisting them in managing physical conditions.
