Hello! My name is Ms. Tawanda McPhatter, and I am a Therapist with Engaging Minds Counseling Services, LLC. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in Virginia, South Carolina, Georgia, and Texas, and I am also a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor in North Carolina. I received my master's degree from Virginia Commonwealth University, and I have been providing therapy services for 15 years. I allow my clients a safe space to discuss their issues, concerns, and needs for themselves using behavioral approaches. I am a very avid listener and I feel that listening is very important when assisting my clients and helps identify their feelings and thoughts on things so that I can identify ways that I can be of assistance in helping to work through and/or address these issues and/or concerns.
Feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure what comes next? You don’t have to figure it all out alone. I provide warm, trauma-informed therapy for adults across Virginia, with a little humor and maybe some adorable dogs along the way!
I help adults navigate life transitions, anxiety, depression, stress, and relationship challenges while building healthier boundaries, stronger relationships, and greater confidence. Therapy isn’t just about learning coping skills—it’s about understanding what’s underneath the struggle, recognizing patterns, and creating meaningful change.
My approach is collaborative, practical, compassionate, and tailored to you. I’ll meet you where you are while gently challenging you when it can help you move forward. Together, we’ll explore your emotions, experiences, relationships, and values while building comfort with discomfort so your emotions don’t have to be in the driver’s seat.
You don’t need to have everything figured out before starting therapy. Therapy is about more than feeling better—it’s about understanding yourself differently and creating a life that feels more meaningful, authentic, and your own.
I firmly believe that every interaction we have in life has an impact on all parties involved, regardless of how insignificant the encounter may seem. Even if the client and I agree or disagree about us being a good fit, we are both changed. We might not notice the change at first, but it's there. I try to bring my 100% to every session, and I hope my clients do the same with the understanding that our 100% changes every day due to life situations. I do share personal experiences with clients if it is appropriate to do so and I feel it would benefit the client. I am a mom of three young children and a wife, so I understand how life can get busy and overwhelming at times. I love to call these times our Life's Storms. We are just getting through the day(s) even if it just barely. By clients choosing to try to continue on even at the hardest points in the Life's Storms, they are braving Life's Storms. This doesn't mean that there aren't times when clients will have thoughts of wanting to just pause life, or run away and start over because that is normal, and coming to counseling to seek help is brave and hard in and of itself.
Welcome. Here you are seen, supported, and safe in a serene, culturally attuned, LGBTQIA+2 affirming space.
