I believe that in order for counseling to be successful we must work equally as a team with forming goals, implementing interventions, and assessing progress. In my view, to make sense of overwhelming issues it is best to break them down. Feelings and thoughts affect our behaviors and how we make sense of the world. Therefore, we must address the impact those feelings and thoughts are having on our symptoms and actions. While also diving into the root of those thoughts and feelings.

Life has a way of nudging us to grow, pause, and ask deeper questions—especially when things feel hard or uncertain. No matter your age or stage, those moments are part of being human. My approach to counseling is eclectic and collaborative, grounded in creating a space where you can show up as you are and feel genuinely supported. Together, we’ll sort through what’s going on, build tools to help you cope, and find ways to move forward that feel meaningful and realistic for you. I work with people navigating burnout, midlife transitions, imposter syndrome, anxiety, depression, and relationship challenges. I bring both clinical insight and a real, human presence to the work (and yes, sometimes that includes a little well-placed profanity). I’m especially passionate about understanding how our early family experiences shape the way we live, love, and work. I truly believe that when the right space is created, therapy can help you reconnect with yourself in powerful, lasting ways.

Hello and welcome! I’m Michelle, a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor with more than 20 years of experience working in the field of behavioral health. I was drawn to counseling by a curiosity about human behavior—how our thoughts, relationships, and life experiences shape the way we see ourselves and the world. I’m licensed in North Carolina (LCMHC), Tennessee (LPC), Kentucky (LPCC-S), and Georgia (LPC). Throughout my career, I’ve learned that there is always more to a person’s story than what we first see. I bring that understanding to each session, listening with compassion, curiosity, and respect. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by anxiety, stress, burnout, or a life transition, you don’t have to sort through it alone. My approach is warm and supportive, with honest conversations and thoughtful challenges. I’ll meet you with understanding while encouraging accountability as you grow. My name is Janet Muta and I am a Licensed Clinician with over 17 years of experience in mental health, behavioral issues and relationships. I treat individuals from diverse backgrounds. My approach is treating the whole person because most of the time our problems are the outcome of more than just one thing and when I get to know you I am able to address different issues that could be contributing to that one specific problem. We all experience some difficulties in our lives sometimes and we all cope differently. What works for one person/couple who are experiencing a similar situation may not work for another and so I personalize your treatment to fit you. Being in therapy is like being on a journey, I make sure you are in the driver’s seat and I become your great working GPS, guiding you to your desired destination. I also hold a degree in finance which sometimes comes handy when helping those who are stressed due to financial needs. Among the treatment modalities I use are: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Positive Parenting, Contingency Management...

On paper, your life may look like it’s together. You show up for work, take care of the people around you, and handle your responsibilities. But underneath that, you may be carrying anxiety, burnout, loneliness, relationship stress, or the constant pressure to keep it all together. If you’ve spent years being “the strong one,” therapy can feel unfamiliar or even uncomfortable. My goal is to create a space where you don’t have to perform, have all the answers, or pretend you’re okay. My style is warm, conversational, and direct. I’ll meet you with compassion while also helping you recognize the patterns that may be keeping you stuck. Together we’ll build practical tools, increase insight, and create meaningful change that extends beyond our sessions. I enjoy working with adults navigating anxiety, depression, self-esteem, boundaries, dating and relationships, family dynamics, burnout, and major life transitions. I serve clients throughout North Carolina and Illinois via secure telehealth.

I come from a first responder family, and it shaped how I understand the people I work with. I built my practice specifically for law enforcement, fire, EMS, dispatchers/911, and veterans — people who carry things most providers have never had to sit with, let alone treat. I'm not interested in being another therapist who nods along without understanding the job. I get it, and that changes what happens in the room. Not all the work is about the job, either. Plenty of clients come to me for personal issues — relationship struggles, childhood stuff, grief, anxiety, things that have nothing to do with the badge or uniform. Being from this world just means I already understand the context you're operating in, whatever you're bringing to the room. I use evidence-based treatments — including EMDR, Brainspotting, and Prolonged Exposure, among others — to help clients process trauma that others may not fully understand. I also draw on Critical Incident Stress Management and Psychological First Aid for cumulative exposure, not just single-incident trauma. Whether it's an officer-involved shooting, years of runs finally catching up with someone, or something from long before the job started, I know how to work with it directly instead of dancing around it. My style is direct and less formal. I'm not going to make you explain your job to me or treat your coping mechanisms as automatically pathological. I'll call things what they are and won't waste your time with fluff. I work entirely via telehealth — meet with me from home, your vehicle between calls, wherever gives you privacy. If you want a therapist who won't flinch and actually understands the world you operate in, I'd like to work with you.

I provide individual and family therapy using a person-centered, collaborative approach that meets you where you are—without judgment and without pressure to be “fixed.” I view therapy as a partnership, and I work alongside clients to support meaningful, sustainable change. My approach focuses on helping clients identify their strengths, increase self-awareness, recognize support systems, and take accountability in ways that promote growth rather than shame. I use an eclectic, evidence-based framework, drawing from Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Motivational Interviewing, Family Systems Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Mindfulness-based practices. Interventions are always tailored to each client’s unique needs, goals, and lived experiences. My work is grounded in a few core beliefs: people are doing the best they can with the skills they have, people are capable of change, and people do get better. I also believe that a strong therapeutic relationship creates the safety necessary for healing and growth. To support progress outside of sessions, I may offer practical, collaborative between-session exercises that help clients apply skills in their daily lives. I am a Christian counselor, and my faith informs my values of compassion, dignity, and respect. I work with individuals from all backgrounds, beliefs, and identities, and faith is incorporated into therapy only when requested by the client. In addition to my professional role, I am a wife, lifelong learner, and mother of three, including a son on the autism spectrum. These experiences deepen my empathy and understanding of caregiving, advocacy, and navigating complex systems.

Hello! Thank you for taking the time to read my biography. I am so happy you went with your instinct to start counseling. I have been a Therapist for over 16 years and my specialization is marriage and family therapy. I have over 30 years experience working with people in one capacity or another. I was a substitute teacher at an alternative high school; I was a silver star rescue diver and an EMT-Intermediate; and, I had worked at a psychiatric hospital for people ages 12 through 80 as well in a private psychiatric office. These few noted experiences have led to my capacity to be an empathetic Therapist while helping others achieve their own goals using their own strengths.
