Hello! I'll get right to the point - these are the main issues I specialize in: 1. TRAUMA/PTSD. This includes all types of trauma (physical, sexual, emotional, psychological) and residual trauma symptoms (OCD, anxiety, depression). 2. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders. This includes all types of OCD, uncertainty, and doubt. PLEASE NOTE: Talk therapy is NOT a suitable treatment for OCD. I use a combination of Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), as well as Inference-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (I-CBT) to assist me in my work with OCD cases. 3. SELF and RELATIONSHIP ISSUES, including: a. CODEPENDENCY (i.e. people pleasing, inability to say no, fear of upsetting others, lack of assertiveness, chronic feelings of obligation). b. PSYCHOLOGICAL ABUSE (manipulative friends, family, romantic partners, controlling relationships, cults, abusive churches, workplace bullying, hazing, sexual coercion, undue influence, toxic people of all kinds). c. IDENTITY CONCERNS (poor boundaries, lack of purpose/identity, career and higher education concerns, narcissism, former cult members). Do any of these describe you or your situation? If so, I'd love to meet you and talk about how we can work together to overcome your struggles. Feel free to browse through my profile and if you feel so inclined, make an appointment so we can work toward restoring balance to your world again.

Hello and welcome to my practice! If you choose to engage in therapy with me, you can expect a professional experience as well as a well-trained provider. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor, a Nationally Certified Counselor, and a Board-Certified Drug and Alcohol Counselor with over 20 years of addiction training and counseling experience. I have additional training/specialization in grief and trauma issues, (Certified Clinical Trauma Professional). Whether you are coping with anxiety and depression related to normal life stressors, or if you struggle with addiction issues and/or impulsive behaviors, we can identify what may be at the root of these behaviors and develop strategies to manage stress in a healthier manner. As a college professor with over 15 years of teaching experience in psychology, criminal justice, grief and loss, and addiction courses, my counseling includes evidence-based approaches to increasing coping skills and reducing common symptoms such as anxiety and depression. My preferred approach is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, with a strong emphasis on Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy. This is a focus on the present rather than the psychodynamic approach, which reviews (sometimes endlessly) the past. I am a Certified Mindfulness-Informed Clinician and my clients report less anxiety after learning these skills. I believe in establishing a confidential therapeutic relationship to build the trust necessary for sharing intimate thoughts and emotions that promote growth, healing, and self-awareness. If this sounds like a good fit for you, please contact me to schedule an initial evaluation, to develop a comprehensive treatment plan. I look forward to assisting you in your decision to make a positive change in your life! Visit my website: https://sharongough13.wixsite.com/website.

Welcome! Come on in, I’m glad you’re here. The challenges of life can be overwhelming; the past making the present feel like less of a gift. You may feel stuck, like it’s impossible to move forward. Life transitions have a way of stirring up emotions and throwing you off balance. This mounting weight can impact your relationships, work, social life, and everything around you. I want you to know that you don’t have to face all of this alone. Together we can create a plan to help you feel better and achieve the changes you are seeking. Here, you will have a safe place to learn and to grow to overcome the challenges you face. We will work together to establish a genuine connection. I believe this is the most important part of therapy. I value honesty and transparency in our work together, without which movement and authentic change cannot occur. For therapy to work, you have to feel understood and heard by your therapist. I will work with you to alleviate hesitancy about therapy and fear of vulnerability. I will frequently check in with you to ensure the therapy process is working for you and ask how our relationship can be improved. This collaboration will empower you to make the changes you need in your life. You will have more control over your decisions. Regardless of your “why,” whether trauma, marriage or relationship issues, depression, anxiety, grief, loss, or life transitions, I’m honored to be here for you. We will get through this together.

As a warrior, I have dedicated my career to caring for those with broken hearts and spirits. Guiding individuals to reclaim healing & wholeness which is their birth right. I enjoy helping individuals obtain their freedom from oppression, depression, confusion, despair, fear, trauma, and the lack of not foresight on how to live life. My goal is to equip the unequipped with the tools to function abundantly. I plan to help you get out of the cycle life has you in, help you strengthen your internal compass, reflect & identify areas of entrapment, while setting appropriate boundaries so that you gain power & control over your life.

I have worked for years as a clinician in an acute, inpatient psychiatric setting and have learned that I find working with trauma and stress related issues to be particularly rewarding in addition to working with clients to help manage mood, anxiety, OCD and depression so that individuals, couples and families can live an optimally functioning life. I believe clients are the experts on themselves and I work collaboratively to identify and implement strengths, needs and changes (as well as acceptance when change is not possible).

I am a LCSW for over 15 years working in various settings, providing therapy for various populations. I have worked with teenagers/young adults addressing the challenging and struggles associated with managing interpersonal relationships and finding our voice. I have worked with young adults transitioning to young adulthood and finding our voice and independence. I have experience working with adults managing family issues, career and relationships. Symptoms of depression and anxiety can be debilitating, I feel confident in supporting you on this journey of healing where we can work together to not only identify coping techniques but learning our triggers and behavior modifications techniques to help us manage the feelings and experience. my mission is to create a safe, supportive, and non-judgmental space where you can explore their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, and develop the tools they need to thrive. I understand that everyone is unique, with their own set of challenges and goals. That's why I take the time to get to know you, and to understand your unique needs and experiences and together identify what healing looks like for you. I am merely a coach and your cheerleader. I am lucky to love what I do and am humbled that I get to be chosen to walk this journey of self- discovery and healing with you.

Frequently asked questions

Why filter by New York rather than a city like New York City?

When looking for online therapy, you can see anyone that is credentialed in the state. We want you to find the best fit, therefore, Grow Therapy shows available therapists across New York from Buffalo to Rochester! If you’d rather see someone in-person, you can change the filter from virtual and find a therapist near you in New York.

Will my therapist take Harvard Pilgrim/UnitedHealthcare?

Yes! If you use Harvard Pilgrim/UnitedHealthcare you’ll be asked to verify your Member ID at the time you book the appointment. However, if you don’t have Harvard Pilgrim/UnitedHealthcare you can select cash. Our therapists will have their cost of appointment on their profile. Individual session costs will vary.

How does the Specialty Filter work? Can I find a therapist that focuses on a specific issue?

The specialty filter is optional. You don’t need to check any boxes to see a provider. However, fit is very important when selecting an online therapist. If you have knowledge or experience to recognize what specialties you may need.

What are the "Clients say I'm" badges?

Grow Therapy asks patients about their experience with therapists after they have had a certain number of sessions. After enough responses, we add those characteristics to their profiles to help you find the best online therapists for you. We're still working on collecting this information from all our therapists.

Why use Gender, Age, and Identities filters?

Finding a provider with a similar life experience can be beneficial because it can be easier to establish rapport and potentially be understood quicker and clearer.

What to expect during your first session?

Your first therapy session is for you and your therapist to meet each other and to ask any questions that you have about the counseling process. This is where you can expect your therapist to do the same as they will ask questions to gain insight into your specific situation. In this first session the therapist is doing their part to gather as much information so they can better assess if they are able to meet your therapeutic needs.

Depending upon your provider's specialty, you may also discuss the methods the therapist will use. For additional information on therapy methods, please visit the Grow Therapy Help Center. Some people feel nervous before their first appointment, and that is totally normal! Coming prepared with a list of questions for your therapist may help. Remember, you're taking a brave step by seeking therapy, and it is okay to be nervous as you try something new.
