I describe myself as a grounded, authentic, and collaborative therapist who balances a warm heart with a highly practical, real world approach to healing. I’m not the type to just sit back and nod silently; I am right there in the trenches with you, bringing my genuine, slightly nerdy self to every session, and I believe everyone has an inner resilience waiting to be unlocked! My life is full, beautifully chaotic, and deeply rewarding. As a spouse and a mother of four, including a wonderful child who is autistic, I intimately understand what it feels like to manage a million moving parts. I know the exhaustion of a racing mind, the weight of sensory and emotional overload, and the delicate art of balancing family, transitions, and personal growth. Because of these lived experiences, I bring a deeply human, judgment-free perspective to my practice. In sessions, we will use evidence-based tools like CBT and DBT to actively build a practical toolkit for your daily life. We will work as a team to quiet the internal noise, challenge unhelpful thought patterns, and master concrete skills to regulate intense emotions. For clients who desire it, I gladly incorporate a Christ-centered approach, utilizing scripture and prayer as an anchor for our clinical work. However, if you are currently facing a painful crisis of faith or spiritual burnout, I offer a safe harbor to process those doubts without a shred of judgment. Ultimately, I meet you exactly where you are. My goal is to help you calm the chaos, break through emotional blocks, and reclaim your peace.

I firmly believe that every interaction we have in life has an impact on all parties involved, regardless of how insignificant the encounter may seem. Even if the client and I agree or disagree about us being a good fit, we are both changed. We might not notice the change at first, but it's there. I try to bring my 100% to every session, and I hope my clients do the same with the understanding that our 100% changes every day due to life situations. I do share personal experiences with clients if it is appropriate to do so and I feel it would benefit the client. I am a mom of three young children and a wife, so I understand how life can get busy and overwhelming at times. I love to call these times our Life's Storms. We are just getting through the day(s) even if it just barely. By clients choosing to try to continue on even at the hardest points in the Life's Storms, they are braving Life's Storms. This doesn't mean that there aren't times when clients will have thoughts of wanting to just pause life, or run away and start over because that is normal, and coming to counseling to seek help is brave and hard in and of itself.

I try to create a collaborative relationship between myself and the client. I have the belief that our thoughts are directly connected to how we feel. By working with clients to solve present-day problems it helps the client approach a stronger and healthier sense of self by focusing on the actual lived experience of a person. By helping clients gradually face and come to realize that their assumptions, evaluations and beliefs might be unhealthy and unrealistic. Having the client be aware even after they have learned to recognize when and where their mental processes have gone wrong, it can in some cases take considerable time or effort to replace a dysfunctional process or habit with a more reasonable and adaptive one.

I’m a licensed clinical social worker, Veteran, and the founder of Beacon Behavioral Therapy, PLLC, where I provide therapy for adults and students navigating life transitions, work-related or academic stress, burnout, anxiety, ADHD, and trauma. I also specialize in supporting individuals in high-stress roles such as military, law enforcement, first responders, caregivers, and healthcare and helping professionals. As a Veteran myself, I understand what it is like to work in mission focused environments My approach is collaborative and practical, drawing from CBT, EMDR, and trauma-informed care to help clients better understand what they’re experiencing, build effective coping skills, and make meaningful, sustainable changes in their daily lives. I focus on creating a supportive space where clients can slow down, gain clarity, and work at a pace that feels safe and manageable. Before becoming a therapist, I spent many years working in military and government environments, which informs my understanding of high-pressure systems and the challenges faced by professionals in demanding roles I understand what it’s like to work in mission-focused environments where you’re expected to keep going and perform under pressure, even when things are difficult. That perspective informs my work with clients who are used to carrying a lot, pushing through stress, and not always having space to process their own experiences while continuing to show up for others.

I utilize a positive theoretical orientation which assumes that all individuals possess an innate desire for well-balanced emotional/mental health. I believe a person enters therapy with a strong wish, whether conscious or unconscious, to overcome obstacles and free themselves from constraints that are holding them back. I find that everyone needs a slightly different approach to accomplish these goals, so I adjust in technique for each specific challenge. I truly enjoy the experience of guiding my clients through this process and consider it a privilege to play such an important role in a person's life. “Crying does not indicate that you are weak. Hi, my name is Stephen As a Christian do you ever feel like you are letting God down, or like you are not being faithful enough because you have real-life problems? Problems In your relationship, emotionally, behaviorally, or even with substance abuse. Is it hard to be kind to yourself? I help individuals manage their anxiety, depression, or burnout by addressing the needs of your body, mind, and spirit using the bible. I integrate current counseling theories with sound biblical principles to help develop a stronger relationship with God, and a stronger you. Whether you are dealing with being overwhelmed, relationship issues, or cycles of anxiety and depression, I am here to help. Seeking therapy can seem scary and maybe even against some of the teachings you've learned in church, but you are making the right choice. You deserve a safe space to heal and grow. In our sessions together I will meet with you, and your spouse if you want, with compassion and evidence-based techniques while using biblical principles so you can overcome the hang-ups and habits holding you back. The research says that 1 in 4 people in the United States, at any given time, have mental health issues. This does not exclude the church. The average church in Virginia has 250 members attending on any given Sunday. That means that at least fifty people in your church service last Sunday are struggling with some type of mental illness or emotional problem. I work with churches to help them with ministering to the hurting, please let me help you.

For undergrad, I attended the University of Alabama (ROLL TIDE!) and for my graduate education and clinical training I practiced at Valdosta State University. The therapeutic modality I use the most often is Narrative Therapy. Using Narrative Therapy, I help clients change the problem stories in their heads to preferred stories to improve their behaviors, relationships, and life outlook. With this practice, I enjoy using journal prompts, metaphors, and media. I am not a trained Christian therapist, but I do identify as a Christian, and enjoy using all religion and spirituality in my practice, but it is not required. I am LGBTQ-IA+ affirming and believe in honoring and creating space for all identities in session. A personal joy of mine is working with Black clients who are first-timers in therapy to work on destigmatizing mental health and healing the impacts of white supremacy. More specifically, I prioritize supporting Black clients who grew up in predominantly White spaces who did not feel "Black enough." My favorite problem to work with is when someone says "I'm stuck," to help a client not only get moving but move in a healthy direction. In my personal life, I am married, am a mother to a sickle cell warrior son, have a wonderful bonus-daughter and playful Aussiedoodle. That being said, I have an appreciation for working with blended families and exploring dating post-divorce. For self-care I enjoy writing fiction, listening to 90's and 2000s R&B, and watching romcoms. Looking forward to helping your healing journey.

I enjoy working with people to help them build a strong sense of self, encourage their confidence in relationships, and help foster a sense of calm and security in their everyday life. I enjoy helping parents navigate the many challenges that come our way. I believe people seek therapy for many reasons: adjustment to a new city or life situation, feeling overwhelmed or stuck, or problems with relationships. Counseling is a process that most of us could benefit from time to time at different stages in life, as it brings an outsider's perspective to events, we are faced with in day-to-day life in a nonjudgmental way.

Usually, my clients seek therapy and counseling after struggling with challenges for days and sometimes months. Over time, these same challenges create maladaptive behavior patterns that must be corrected to facilitate change. However, my clients tend to dig in while inserting a host of new concerns. Albert Einstien wrote: "We can't solve today's problems with the mentality that created them" With this in mind, it is better to seek professional services and resources: Recognizing you're not alone in this healing process. I understand that therapy cannot solve all things of the past that challenge us, but clients can seek support, understanding, and better days. My passion is to help the world heal through community and humanity. I'm ready to help you define and rewrite your new beginning. This will allow you to sculpt the person you want to be.
