About me

Hi, I'm Jamie (Sanders), I'm a board-certified psychiatric nurse practitioner trained in medication evaluations and management for a wide variety of mental health conditions. Generally people see me for medication evaluations and management but my role is not limited to prescribing; I provide psychotherapy services for their unique benefits. My approach is patient-centered, creative, integrating a variety of therapeutic modalities, as well as, medication. My approach to medication management is grounded in neuroscience. Before I became a psychiatric nurse practitioner I worked at Stanford University in the Department of Neurobiology in a lab that studied the neural basis of decision-making and value judgment. I transitioned to clinical work to utilize my education and experience helping people rather than furthering research. I draw from a number of psychotherapy modalities that range from more skills-based and goal-oriented ones, like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), to more abstract, insight oriented ones, like psychodynamic therapy to look at how our unconscious drives and past experiences affect our mental health. I am a proponent of the benefits of nutrition (not dieting!) and moving our bodies for individuals of all shapes and sizes. Physical activity helps our neurons grow! Our brains are organs and need certain nutrients to function well. Moving our bodies is good for our physical and mental health. I am body-positive and work to dismantle current harmful weightcentric approaches in healthcare. Specialized Training: I treat gender diverse individuals and completed training at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) Gender Clinic. I am a WPATH member. This isn't always relevant to treatment for gender diverse folx. It is relevant for anyone on GAHT or hormone suppression medication because these can affect psychiatric medications and psychiatric medications can affect them. I completed a minor in pharmacogenomics at UCSF and utilize pharmacogenomic data for some patients.

Get to know me

In our first session together, here's what you can expect

I like to get to know my patients, gather background information and learn about their goals for treatment. I like to share more about background and answer any questions a patient might have.

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

What I hear from my patients is that I'm easy to talk to, I listen closely and work to understand what they're going through. I like to provide education about medications and some of the scientific background for what they do. I want my patients to understand the rationale for the treatments I recommend. My overarching goal working with people is to facilitate their understanding of themselves. Looking at how and why we experience and show up in the world as we do makes it possible to come to some peace with our past so we can leave it in the past. When we're able to, we're then able to experience the world as it is to develop in ways intrinsic to ourselves with more insight and agency to be ourselves.

The clients I'm best positioned to serve

People who are interested in knowing the rationale and mechanisms of medication options, are reflective, respond to an analytical approach and anyone who is thoughtful and looking to develop a better understanding of themselves tend to be a good fit. In general, I find folx who tolerate some discomfort and are open to being stretched to look at themselves in sometimes challenging ways benefit from my approach. I also implicitly believe in the capacity of everyone to do hard things, discomfort is a touchstone of growth and healing. Folx who are curious, value developing insight and look to develop more insight into themselves are often a good fit. I have an inclination towards the cerebral that resonates more with some folx than others.
