Have you been considering therapy? What’s stopping you from engaging in therapy? One of my goals is to destigmatize and normalize therapy, particularly in marginalized communities and expand access to therapy. As a therapist, I hope to provide a safe, supportive, comfortable, judgment-free environment that allows one to feel comfortable enough to open up and share their story and experiences. My focus areas are individuals coping with life stressors, depression, anxiety, family relationships and other diagnoses and stressors that are impacting your daily functioning. It would be a pleasure to walk on this journey of healing and empowerment with you.

My name is Rick Amaral, ACSW, LCSW. Let me begin by fully introducing myself and sharing with you my years of experience as a clinician, manager and director. I have been working with children, teens and adult in many different formats (i.e. individual, family work, group work) for over 30 years in both private practice, as well as with local community mental health agencies. I am also an Adjunct Professor at the local area colleges for the past 20+ years, teaching both psychology and sociology courses (both graduate and undergraduate level courses). In our sessions, I would like to utilize a strengths-based approach that works alongside you to identify areas that you would like to work on. Acknowledging that all cars come with rearview mirrors, I would like to spend some time hearing from you about past life events and journey that you think have contributed to your development (both positively and otherwise). My preferred way of assisting you is to focus on a Life Narrative format. Such narratives allow for many chapters, some written, many left to be written. When warranted, I will provide psycho-educational information on topics of interest (i.e. diagnosis, skill building, coping skills, mindfulness, etc..) and will share with you both local and community supports that you could draw upon after our time together has come to a close.

Hello! I have a particular passion for working with Christian-identifying clients who want their faith and values to be meaningfully incorporated into the counseling process. At the same time, I welcome clients of all backgrounds and beliefs and am committed to providing a respectful, compassionate space for anyone seeking therapy. As a trained marriage and family therapist, I take a systemic view of my clients' lives, assessing the many factors that influence their experience. These include family history, interpersonal relationships, and individual development. It is normal for us to have ups and downs in our lives. Emotions can become difficult to handle; we may feel overwhelmed. Sometimes we develop thought patterns that can make us feel as though there is a battle going on inside of us. We may engage in behaviors that work against us as we strive to meet our goals--goals like having the kinds of relationships we want for ourselves. A competent therapist is someone who can, with genuine curiosity and compassion, help you get yourself back on track. My goal is to help folks rediscover and apply the essential skills they need to stay on track after therapy is over.

From an early age, I discovered a strong passion for helping others. During high school, I was deeply influenced by my favorite teacher, a student of renowned psychologist Lawrence Kohlberg, best known for his theory on the stages of moral development. Her mentorship inspired me to pursue a career in the helping professions, where I could make a meaningful impact on the lives of others. I went on to earn my undergraduate degree in Human Services with a minor in Gerontology, laying the foundation for a career focused on compassion, advocacy, and evidence-based practice. Over the years, I have specialized in working with individuals who have experienced various forms of trauma, including emotional, physical, and sexual abuse. In my clinical work, I draw from a range of therapeutic modalities tailored to meet the unique needs of each client. These include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Multidimensional Family Therapy (MDFT), and supportive counseling. There are lots of ups and downs in life… twists… and turns. Some people choose to navigate difficulties alone. However, you are likely reading this because you are tired of doing it all by yourself. You’re thinking about a little help and support. Reaching for help is a wise thing. It is a sign of health that I value deeply. I am Jim Hughes. I have over 30 years of experience as a Specialty Clinician. I'm a former faculty member of the UMASS STRESS REDUCTION CLINIC that was featured on Bill Moyers' Healing and the Mind. I got my start working with Children at a crisis shelter, Casa De los Ninos, and in the trenches at The Arizona Children’s Home in Tucson Arizona. Moved by the profound transformations I witnessed, I moved east and attended graduate school as I worked at Wellspring, a long-term therapeutic community in Bethlehem Connecticut with mentor Richard Beauvais. Upon graduation, I worked for the renowned UMASS STRESS REDUCTION CLINIC with Jon Kabat-Zinn teaching meditation and stress reduction in the hospital. In all my endeavors, mindfulness-based stress reduction is the key ingredient to help heal through difficult emotional and medical issues, challenging adult relationships, intimacy issues, anxiety, depression, and internet and pornography addiction. In addition, I am particularly interested in helping people with chronic stress and anxiety and medical problems such as panic attacks, stress, anxiety, heart disease, hypertension, A1C issues, diabetes, chronic pain, cancer and other medical issues.

I have lived a long and colorful life. Like everyone else, I've made good and bad choices and learned from each. I have 22+ years experience in the mental health and substance abuse treatment field. I DO NOT JUDGE, AT ALL, PERIOD. I can be both blunt and gentle as appropriate. My role is to offer another perspective, a way to see life more fully and function better, no more, no less. I don't pretend to have all the answers but only one slice of wisdom. I just share what can help someone. Some people are not yet ready to be helped. Yet for those who are feeling lost on life's journey and are willing to listen and learn, I'm here to assist. My life work can be summed up in three words, "offering people hope. " "The wound is where the light enters." - Jeladdin Rumi "A coward dies a thousand deaths, a brave man only once." Martin Luther King Jr. "Wouldn't take nothin' for my journey now." - Maya Angelou "The past is gone, and there is left only a blessing." - Kahlil Gibran "Be true to yourself, and you will be false to no one else." - William Shakespeare "How very lucky are we, for just a moment to be, part of life's eternal rhyme." Charlotte's Web, movie "Not all who wander are lost." J.R.R. Tolkien

Much of my experience has been working with people who are struggling with depression, anxiety, trauma, LGBTQ+ issues, substance abuse issues and self-esteem issues. You can expect me to walk you through whatever difficulties you re facing and help you learn more abut yourself and the way you interact with the world. This way we can be more open and honest with each other.
