(she/her)
Hi, I'm a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) based in California. I help adults to adjust to changes in their lives impacting their mental health such as pregnancy/parenthood, relocation/displacement, career changes, and loss. I'm culturally sensitive and take a holistic approach to treatment. I know that health and wellbeing happens in community, and thus, I will encourage you to be in relationship with other living beings including nature and pets. We will use all of your strengths in the therapy room to help you accomplish your treatment goal. I offer a sliding scale for cash clients.
During our first session, we will start with brief introductions, discuss the challenges you're facing, review the forms you have completed, identify your strengths, identify the boundaries and expectations of therapy and collect your treatment goals. This will inform the treatment plan to work through in follow-up sessions.
The greatest strengths I have as a provider is compassion and hope. I believe that you have the ability to heal and manage your own humanity. I use simple language to provide psychoeducation and instructions for interventions. I will provide a safe space for you to be your authentic self. Therapy is a collaborative process in which I will be your ally, at times supportive and encouraging, at times confrontative or challenging. My goal is to ensure that every client has the knowledge and skills needed to reach a point where I am no longer needed.
I am positioned to help adults who need appointments outside 8-5 business hours, who are experiencing symptoms that are negatively impacting their body function (eat, sleep, move, learn); those who just experience a major adversity, or are struggling to adapt to changes including natural life transitions (pregnancy, parenthood, empty nesters), relocation, new job, immigration, loneliness, or disconnection from loved ones causing difficulty at home, work, or school.
Vanessa Lopez Asaah offers therapy covered by CalViva Health (Medi-Cal), Community Health Plan of Imperial Valley (Medi-Cal), Gold Coast Health Plan (Medi-Cal), Health Net (Medi-Cal), Health Plan of San Joaquin - Medi-Cal, L.A. Care Health Plan (Medi-Cal), Partnership HealthPlan of California (Medi-Cal), San Francisco Health Plan (Medi-Cal) and Santa Clara Family Health Plan - Medi-Cal in California.
I integrate ACT with clients who are struggling to look inward and see their worth, who fear change and transitions, who experience dissociative symptoms or panic attacks. This treatment method helps see all that impacts your wellbeing both mind and body, internal and external, without having to over identify. It helps you separate from your circumstances so that you can empower yourself to take actions that promotes your health and wellbeing.
As human beings, we are all deserving of dignity and respect. A compassion focused treatment assists the therapeutic relationship by creating a safe and accepting space so you can feel welcome. It assists to access your human skills of kindness and connection so you can face what you have been avoiding that is negatively impacting your wellbeing. The hope is that you gain confidence in applying a compassionate view so that you can make choices that will get you unstuck and active toward the life you want to have.
I have developed a practice that integrates formal treatment approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) with universal wisdom such as cultural indigenous practices and mindfulness. These practices have been integrated to daily living for millennia to create balance and heal. My hope is that you can be open to the wisdom of your roots; culture, faith, ancestry, and your nature so that it can be in relationship with you during treatment.
I integrate Narrative Exposure Therapy to process difficult stressful events and interpersonal wounds from the past impacting your present life. This form of treatment helps you develop the ability to manage painful memories and understand the body response to the trauma lived so that you can free yourself from emotional flooding toward balance.
