Choosing a therapist is a deeply personal decision, and I honor the courage it takes to begin this process. If we work together, you can expect a therapeutic relationship built on trust, collaboration, and respect. I create a supportive, nonjudgmental space where you can show up as you are—no masks, no pressure—and begin to explore what healing and growth look like for you. My approach is thoughtful and tailored. I draw from evidence-based methods like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Attachment-Based Therapy, and Emotion-Focused Therapy, adapting each session to meet your needs and goals. Whether you are navigating anxiety, self-doubt, relationship challenges, or simply feeling stuck, I help you make sense of your experiences, strengthen emotional awareness, and find new ways to move forward. I believe therapy should not just be about coping—it should be about transformation. That might mean learning how to quiet an inner critic, setting healthier boundaries, deepening relationships, or reconnecting with your sense of purpose. We will work at a pace that feels right for you, and I will walk beside you each step of the way with compassion, curiosity, and care. If you are looking for a therapist who listens deeply, challenges gently, and is committed to helping you build a more grounded and empowered version of your life, I would be honored to work with you.

Hello, I'm John-David Checkett -- the first man in history to earn a master's degree in Women's Studies in Florida! How many times has this happened to you: You've made an innocent remark, and the other person distorts it and blames you for the distortion, not for what you actually said. That's called the Strawman Argument and is a common problem of communication -- communication typically being the single biggest problem couples have. Communication is one of the social sciences, and one of my specialties, along with Women's Studies, Pastoral Psychology and Clinical Social Work. I help high-functioning men and women free themselves from low self-esteem and negative thinking. As a former officer in the Theosophical Society and a former professional psychic, I firmly believe in the value of Spirituality to Mental Health. I can also help with exercise and nutrition, to help create a holistically healthy situation for you. Whether you're dealing with anxiety or depression, relationship problems, or just feel overwhelmed, I'm here to help -- even with time management! You might feel bit nervous about starting therapy, but I'm extremely easy to talk to, knowledgable in a wide variety of subjects, and very media-literate. Most people feel better after a session. In a short time we can get you unstuck and back to living a happy life again.

There’s no denying that life isn’t always a walk in the park. While I’m sure you can relate to this as an adult, the same goes for kids, teens, and college-age students. Don’t forget, they’re going through this life without a manual, just as you are. But life is also spectacularly beautiful. Unfortunately, the trials faced during any phase of life can often dim that beauty and hold your child back from living the life they deserve. Anxiety, depression, and self-doubt can creep into anyone's life at any age. Mental health challenges can rob them of happiness, self-confidence, and life-fulfillment. I get it. I’ve been in their shoes. As an experienced, understanding, and caring counselor for teens, children, and young adults. I can help support your child, whether they are elementary-school-aged, in the turbulent teenage years, or college-aged. And, because I value being an advocate for kids and an ally for parents, I can support you, too.

I have gained a deep understanding of the evidence-based practices that can help you address issues with substance use addiction as well as behavioral addictions including compulsive Internet use, gambling, and compulsive sexual behavior. Addressing the underlying causes of addiction is of equal importance and often involves trauma-focused therapy and Psychotherapy to manage the anxiety and depression that frequently are part of the problem. By tailoring a comprehensive approach to addiction therapy, we will address the unique needs of each individual to produce the best possible results.

Life is not easy. We have all been through at least one event that affected us in a way where it follows us and finds ways to get our attention. For a lot of us this may be depression and anxiety. Lack of a sense of identity. Trying to survive in a world where we are told to live and think a certain way. But at the end of the day, we are all different; built with our own unique energetic and genetic blueprint. So how in any way can each of us follow the same path, the same way of living? My specific focus is working with individuals to break down walls. Understand how past events might be affecting them today in their relationship dynamics, their career, why they make the choices they make. Setting a path to find themselves and be the best versions of themselves. This might involve tapping into their creativity and not being afraid to dream. I highly encourage using one's imagination. A lot of those whom struggle with depression and anxiety have nervous systems that are in constant survival and are not even aware of that. I work with clients on finding modalities to help them break out of survival mode and feel safe in their daily lives. My approach is more holistic: mind/body/spirit. My preferred practice is spiritually based, but I am happy to work with those whom do not prefer that approach. Ultimately, I'm here to guide those looking for their true selves!

My path to becoming a therapist began outside the world of mental health, giving me a broader lens and a deep respect for the complexity of people’s stories and their cultures. With an MBA in International Marketing from George Washington University, I spent years working for major global firms—until I realized my true purpose was helping people heal. Nearly a decade ago, I returned to school to pursue my second master’s degree in mental health counseling, fully committing to this work. Since then, I’ve supported clients in a wide range of settings: residential treatment centers, a psychiatric hospital during the height of COVID, and for over three years, individuals navigating the criminal justice system. For the past few years, I’ve continued that work in private practice. These experiences have shaped not only my clinical skill set, but my unwavering belief in the resilience of the human spirit. No matter where you’ve been, you deserve care that’s grounded in empathy, respect, and a commitment to real change.
