Chauncey Chatman. Marriage & Family Therapist License # LMFT45560. I have over 10 years of experience providing therapy services to adolescents, couples, families and adults. Much of my approach is a combination of collaborative talk therapy with a strong emphasis on mindfulness practices that foster self-awareness and behavior modification that result in more positive outcomes. My approach: My approach to therapy includes active use of the principles of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Motivational Interviewing and Solution Focused therapy. My focus: Currently my focus is on working with adult individual clients. I have worked with many other populations as well to include adolescents, families and couples. I have provided treatment services to peoples from all over the world to include individuals and families. I currently work regularly with individuals who are challenged by symptoms of depression, anxiety, substance use issues, codependency issues, grief issues, relationship issues and anger management issues. My communication style: I seek to establish a collaborative tone or environment. I often try to gather additional background/historical information from the client in order to help the client identify and process their stated goals. I often seek to introduce what I hope would be helpful ideas, concepts and practices that are conducive to helping the client achieve their stated goals through active involvement in the treatment process. I also seek to provide continued empathy and encouragement. My journey to therapy: I didn't initially plan to become a therapist. The process was more evolutionary: I started working with youth, then families, couples and individuals in various jobs that included job coach and employment and education coach/counselor. I decided to seek a graduate degree when I was working directly with adults as and employment and assessment specialist. In that job, I worked directly with adult individuals who had lost their jobs due to closures/reductions. I was then becoming more familiar with issues that affected their potential for retraining: substance use, relationship/family issues, anger issues, anxiety and depression among others. I decided then that I wanted to learn more as I believed that I needed more knowledge and more understanding about how to help individuals achieve their goals and improve their relationships. Since that time, I have worked as a School Counselor/Case Manager and Marriage and Family Therapist in various hospital and mental health clinic treatment settings in California to include work as a member of mental health treatment service teams that included psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, peer counselors and family service workers. I believe that I am most effective as a therapist with individual clients who are challenged by major life transitions.
