Hi! My name is A.K. Parker (They/Them). I am a Black, Queer, Trans-Masc/Non-Binary Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) in California! Sometimes we can start to feel overwhelmed by life. Various triggers such as identity stress, loss, life transitions, traumatic events, anxious feelings, and relational conflict can start to feel unbearable. This can make carrying on day to day activities very challenging. Whether or not you recognize these behaviors in yourself, your children, or your family as a collective, we can work collaboratively towards addressing your unique needs. You are not alone in this. Today you are one step closer to a more authentic you where you feel empowered and on a path to positive growth and well-being. Using various therapeutic models and evidenced based interventions (such as Expressive Art Therapy, CBT, Somatic, and Narrative therapy), I specialize in addressing issues related to gender dysphoria, anxiety, depression, trauma, grief/loss, family conflict, relational issues, behavioral issues with children/ teens, and various other stressors that arise from having a marginalized identity (racial minority, LGBTQIA+, etc.). I know that it's difficult to reach out for help; but it's more difficult to continue to live with symptoms of depression, worry, and daily stress. Take the first step, set up an appointment today and let's begin a journey to a better you in a safe and supporting space. I look forward to meeting you.

My treatment methods

Gender-affirming therapy

As a trans-masc, non-binary individual, my experience with this approach is rooted in creating a supportive and affirming space where clients can explore and express their gender identity without judgment. I focus on understanding each client's unique journey and tailor the therapy to their specific needs, which often includes addressing issues related to gender dysphoria, social transitioning, and advocating for themselves in various settings. I have extensive experience working with trans college students and youth.

Narrative

I integrate narrative therapy based on its core principle: everyone's life story has power and meaning. My experience with this method has shown me how transforming the narrative can significantly empower individuals. I guide clients to reframe their experiences and perceptions, seeing themselves as separate from their problems. This approach helps them rewrite their personal stories in a way that fosters growth and healing, emphasizing their strengths and resilience.

Trauma-Focused CBT

In my practice, I use trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT) to help clients, especially children and adolescents, recover from the effects of trauma. My experience with TF-CBT has been profoundly positive, as it effectively combines cognitive-behavioral techniques with trauma-sensitive interventions. This approach involves helping clients identify and challenge unhelpful thoughts related to their trauma, and gradually expose them to their trauma memory in a controlled and supportive environment. Through this process, I assist clients in processing their emotions and developing healthier coping mechanisms. The ultimate goal is to empower clients, enabling them to integrate their traumatic experiences into their life narrative in a healthy way, reducing the ongoing impact of trauma on their mental health.

Somatic

I incorporate somatic therapy to address the physical symptoms and manifestations of psychological distress. My experience with this therapeutic approach emphasizes the connection between the body and the mind, recognizing how trauma and stress can be stored physically. I guide clients through various body-focused techniques such as deep breathing, relaxation exercises, and gentle movement to help them reconnect with their bodies. By helping clients become more aware of their bodily sensations and teaching them how to manage these sensations, somatic therapy aids in releasing tension, reducing anxiety, and improving overall emotional regulation. This approach has proven especially beneficial for clients who might find traditional talk therapy challenging, offering them an alternative path to healing.

Experiential Therapy

As a certified Expressive Arts therapist, I utilize experiential therapy to engage clients in activities that encourage them to express and explore their emotions. My experience with this approach has shown it to be particularly effective in helping clients access and process feelings that may be difficult to articulate verbally. By using techniques such as role-playing, guided imagery, and creative arts, I facilitate a dynamic therapeutic environment where clients can experience their emotions in real time, rather than simply talking about them.
