Jonathan Audu
I am a dual board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC) and Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP-BC). I received a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Post-Master’s Degree with a specialty in Mental Health Practice from Brandman University (University of Massachusetts Global), and a Post-Master’s Degree in Family Practice from Charles Drew University. I have practiced bedside nursing for more than 18 years, giving me a deep understanding of patients’ comprehensive needs. I have training in addiction Medicine through the University of California Irvine.
I have extensive training in Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder through the VA Long Beach Healthcare System and am a certified Trauma-Informed Specialist.
My work includes client-centered care focused on diagnosing and treating mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders through medication management. I provide compassionate, evidence-based mental health services, including medication-assisted treatment. My role is multidimensional, serving as a clinician, educator and advocate for mental health and emotional well-being.
First session
In our first session together, we will begin with brief introductions and an open discussion about the specific needs, concerns, and challenges you are currently facing. This initial appointment is a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation and typically lasts 45–60 minutes. Building a trusting therapeutic relationship is essential, and I strive to create a supportive, welcoming, and non-judgmental environment where you feel heard and understood. During this session, I will ask questions about your mental and physical health history, family history, current symptoms, and any factors that may be affecting your well-being. This information helps guide clinical understanding and supports accurate assessment and diagnosis. When appropriate, baseline labs, an EKG, urine toxicology testing, or relevant medical reports may be requested. Treatment options—including psychotherapy, medication management, or both—will be discussed. Please note that I do not prescribe controlled substances during the initial visit. In cases where controlled medications may be clinically appropriate, they will only be considered after necessary laboratory testing, urine drug screening, and thorough evaluation to ensure safe and appropriate care. Together, we will begin developing a personalized care plan aligned with your goals. You can expect to receive professional mental health care that supports your emotional, psychological, and social well-being. We will also review confidentiality, office policies, and the structure of future sessions, including frequency and expectations. I look forward to meeting you and partnering with you on your journey toward improved wellness.
Strengths
After working in healthcare for many years, I have learned how to care for patients in a comprehensive, specific, and holistic manner. My experience as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner has strengthened my clinical knowledge, communication skills, and ability to collaborate effectively, key elements that support healing for individuals who have experienced trauma, stress, and significant life challenges. I strive to provide care with honesty, efficiency, and transparency. I also value accessibility and open communication. For non-urgent needs, patients are welcome to contact me through email, which I check daily, and I typically respond within 24 hours. Additionally, my front desk team is available to help with scheduling, administrative needs, and general support to ensure a smooth and stress-free experience. My goal is to support you through compassionate, evidence-based care while creating a safe environment where you feel respected, understood, and empowered in your mental health journey.
Ideal clients
I provide treatment for a wide array of mental health conditions, including psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia and drug- or alcohol-induced psychosis; all forms of depressive disorders, including postpartum depression; anxiety disorders such as panic disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), social anxiety, acute stress disorder, and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). I also treat mood disorders including bipolar disorder, as well as personality disorders and many other behavioral and emotional challenges. I support my clients with evidence-based medication management combined with a person-centered therapeutic approach. My practice is rooted in unconditional positive regard, active listening, and supportive reflection to build trust and establish a strong therapeutic alliance. I am deeply influenced by Brené Brown’s philosophy, which guides my work in helping patients navigate the complexities of mental health with authenticity, resilience, and courage. As she states, “Vulnerability sounds like truth and feels like courage. Truth and courage aren’t always comfortable, but they’re never weaknesses.” My goal is to help you not only heal, but thrive.
