HI my name is Eric Howell, and I am a licensed Marriage Family Therapist. I received my Masters at California State University, Northridge. I have been licensed for over 14 years. I have experience in Non Profit, County Government, and Private Practice. I will enjoy getting to know you, and working together to see how we can help you feel better, and be more of the person you want to be.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

Client can expect in our first session that i will be completing an initial assessment, where i will be asking you questions to get a general picture of how your doing, level of distress you maybe in, and how the problems your dealing with maybe impacting your relationships, work, and school. This will serve as a good starting place to know how to help you.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

It is particularly important in our sessions for you to feel listened to. This is one of my strengths that I will be bringing to our sessions. My ability to put my full attention, and focus on listening to what you have to say, and formulating what it all means. Often growing up, or in our daily lives, the people around us may not have the time or attention to allow us to feel fully understood. My goal is to have you feel fully listened to and understood. The other important ingredient is for for you to feel safe and not judged. For therapy to happen you must be able to open up about the things that are bothering you, You cannot do that unless you feel fully accepted in your therapy session. I work hard to provide a safe environment for you to open up and really explore what is bothering you, without shame or judgment.

My treatment methods

Eclectic

Each person comes in with a unique set of challenges they are facing. I want to get to know you, understand your challenges, and use a variety of treatment methods to best alleviate your discomfort and move you into the direction you see for yourself.

Person-centered (Rogerian)

This is a critical approach that I incorporate into every session. It is necessary for me to bring to each session nonjudgemental listening, and acceptance that you can change and grow.

Cognitive Behavior Therapy for Suicide Prevention (CBT-SP)

I have been utilizing CBT for over 10 years. I use it to provide a quick relief of significant symptoms of anxiety and depression, such as ruminating thoughts, critical thoughts, low self esteem. anger problems, sleep issues, etc.

Interpersonal

I have been using Interpersonal Theory for over 10 years. This theory helps a client understand the interpersonal dynamics that are created when they socialize with others. This is critical because often these dynamics may contribute to some of the challenges they are faced with.

Multicultural

I have been working in a multicultural environment for over 25 years. I believe it is critical in understanding a person, by the understanding the culture in which they identify as. Culture will help me understand how you act towards yourself, towards your family, and towards the outside world. Also, how the society that you live in may influence the person you are and the person you want to be.
