Hi! I'm a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in California. I have been practicing for 23+ years both in the public and private sectors. When I am not providing psychotherapy, I am an educator, and lead or co-lead trainings, workshops and seminars and on the topics Diversity-Equity-Inclusion (DEI) with a focus on race, class and gender, using both clinical and social justice lenses (perspectives) for organizations, communities and public/private institutions.
In our first session, you can expect that I will invite you to be your authentic and genuine self. Because I view myself and my role as your therapist to be in partnership with you, I will meet you where you are rather than you meeting me where I am as your therapist. Establishing trust and rapport with each other is paramount to the quality care that you deserve.
Because I come from humble beginnings, humility is one of my core personal/cultural and professional values. I can only say that my openness and acceptance to differences without judgement of others is my one of my greatest strengths. I also strive to work with my clients to ensure that their treatment goals are clear, specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-bound. I adapt my approach to the clients' styles of problem solving and healing based on their cultural values, attitudes and practices.
I love working diverse young adults, adults and older adults from ALL racial/ethnic, socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. I have a specialty working with youth and adults and their families who are involved in the justice and child welfare systems; adults who struggle with substance use; and who are suffering from racial, historical and inter-generational trauma.
Drawing from various counseling theories, intervention strategies and techniques allows for the unique development of a therapeutic experience for the client/patient that allows me to meet them where they are rather than meeting me where I am as the therapist. This method enables me to practice and foster cultural humility, acceptance of diversity and differences in a non-judgmental way. Equally important, I draw from the clients' strengths rather than deficits to foster and promote self determination and empowerment.
Multicultural therapy takes into consideration many aspects of one’s social classification such as, but not limited to racial/ethnic, gender, spiritual/religious, orientation, disabilities, age and class identities. It is sensitive to the history and unique experiences of the historically disenfranchised or oppressed peoples of our society. In this approach, I work with clients to assess, identify and determine if problems or issues relate to, or are mediated by cultural factors, as not all problems are necessarily related to or best treated by emphasizing culture. If the presenting or underlying issues that the client is experiencing is indeed rooted in some of form(s) of discrimination aka "isms", I employ eclectic treatment methods that will enable the clients to heal from the trauma due to the injustice in order establish and/or maintain a sense of self, self worth/esteem while preserving and honoring their cultural identities, values and practices.
CBT is applied when symptoms of anxiety or depression or both interferes with clients' ability to appropriately function in many parts of daily living such as social relationships, work, school and other activities. Through guiding questions and exploration of alternative ways of perceiving and thinking about problems and solutions, clients can gain healthier perspectives, emotions and attitudes by learning to dismantle/challenge distorted, negative and/or intrusive thoughts which can result in negative emotions, poor decisions and actions.
