Having worked in the field of mental health since 2013 I have been fortunate enough to work in settings that have allowed me to work with a large variety of individuals experiencing a diverse range of symptoms and disorders. I am passionate about helping people improve the qualities of their lives and regain a sense of control. I have been trained in and utilized CBT, DBT, Prolonged Exposure Therapy, Cognitive Processing Therapy, Interpersonal Therapy for Depression, Seeking Safety, and EMDR. Over the years I have built upon my interactional style and am comfortable with working most adult populations. I am most comfortable with trauma focused work but also have a lot of experience in working with substance use disorders, depression, anxiety, panic disorders, grief, and life stage transitions.
Effective therapy is based on trust and good rapport. Our first session will be focused on getting to know each other and establishing a better understanding of what brings you to therapy. I will also provide you with my relevant background and experience in the rapport building process.
Over the past decade I have grown from Veteran's case manager to community based mental health therapist to Clinical Director and Supervisor. These broad experiences have provided me with plethora of experience and trainings to address and work with a wide variety of disorders. Over the years I have learned that a client centered strengths based approach coupled with evidence based practices can make a significant difference in the clients overall adaptive functioning. I have put in years of developing my therapeutic and interpersonal skills that have equipped me to work with diverse populations. My broad understanding on mental health pathologies and interventions make me a great candidate to work with to help you find adaptive resources to decrease your symptoms and restore a sense of balance and interpersonal functioning back into your life.
I have been utilizing CBT for depression, anxiety, and trauma for close to a decade. I was trained through the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health by members of the Beck Institute where CBT was created. In the early phase of CBT the focus is on psychoeducation and enhancing your understanding of how CBT works and evaluating presenting symptoms and the cognitions driving your symptoms. Once established we will then begin to evaluate and challenge the cognitions which should alter your emotional and behavioral reactions to your perceptions. The goal is to create more adaptive ways of thinking that create a healthier emotional and behavioral shift.
I was trained in EMDR though the EMDR institute. Trauma focused work is far from a one size shoe fits all. For many it can be destabilizing to jump right into trauma focused work without the proper emotional regulation skills. For starters I will assess you for the presence of any dissociative traits. If present we will work with mindfulness and grounding based interventions to reduce dissociative traits. We will then work and emotional regulation to ensure that trauma reprocessing is not too emotionally dysregulating. Once emotionally ready we will work on developing internal adaptive resources to emotionally regulate quickly during trauma reprocessing. Once the client has developed to skills to emotionally regulate we will begin the trauma reprocessing beginning with the earliest trauma memories and working our way forward.
