I am Dr. Paul Fernandez. I have been a licensed therapist and psychologist for more than 30+ years. I have spent my career concentrating on providing mental health services to the Latino/Hispanic community in Southern California, with a special emphasis in substance abuse, addiction recovery, anxiety/stress, depression, and anger management. I bring a unique, spiritual, Latino/Hispanic perspective to mental health counseling that focuses on the needs of our community.
In our first session, I concentrate on introducing myself, listening to you and understanding what your needs are, providing you an opportunity to ask questions and address any issues that you may have, and I try to give an outline of what therapy with me would be like.
I provide a very non-judgmental, safe environment where you can feel secure in discussing any issues that you feel are most important to be addressed in your life. Proporciono un ambiente seguro y sin prejuicios donde usted puede sentirse seguro al discutir cualquier tema que considere más importante abordar en su vida.
I am best positioned to work with individuals from the Latino/Hispanic community who are seeking support for substance use and addiction recovery, anxiety, stress, depression, anger management, and life transitions. Many of my clients feel overwhelmed, stuck, or unsure of how to move forward, but are open to self-reflection and meaningful change. I work especially well with clients who value a culturally informed and spiritually grounded approach to therapy. This includes individuals navigating family dynamics, cultural identity, generational expectations, and the unique stressors that can arise within our community. I also support those who may be entering therapy for the first time, as well as those returning to therapy and looking for a more personalized, understanding approach. My ideal client is someone who is willing—even if hesitant—to explore their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors in a safe, non-judgmental environment. Together, we focus on building healthier coping strategies, improving communication and relationships, and creating a greater sense of balance, purpose, and emotional well-being.
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
I incorporate Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) into my practice by helping clients identify and challenge unhelpful thought patterns, while also integrating a Christian perspective when it aligns with their beliefs. CBT focuses on the connection between thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, and I often guide clients in examining how their internal dialogue may be contributing to distress. For clients who value their faith, this process can include comparing negative or distorted thoughts with truth-based, faith-informed perspectives—encouraging a shift toward thoughts that reflect hope, purpose, and a more grounded sense of identity. From a Christian lens, this approach often parallels the idea of “renewing the mind,” where clients learn to replace harmful thinking patterns with beliefs that are both psychologically sound and spiritually meaningful. This may involve reinforcing themes such as grace over shame, responsibility paired with compassion, and developing a stable sense of worth that is not solely dependent on external validation. Throughout this process, I maintain a balanced, evidence-based approach while allowing space for clients to draw on their faith as a source of strength, clarity, and long-term emotional resilience.
Christian Counseling
I integrate Christian counseling into my practice by thoughtfully combining evidence-based therapeutic approaches with faith-informed principles, when it is meaningful and appropriate for the client. My work is grounded in well-established methods such as cognitive and behavioral strategies, while also incorporating themes such as identity, purpose, forgiveness, grace, and personal responsibility. For clients who value their Christian faith, this may include exploring how their beliefs can support emotional healing, guide decision-making, and strengthen resilience during difficult seasons. At the same time, I approach this integration with respect, sensitivity, and clinical integrity. Faith-based elements—such as discussing spiritual values or incorporating prayer—are always guided by the client’s comfort level and personal beliefs. My goal is to create a supportive space where clients can explore both their mental health and their faith in a way that feels authentic, empowering, and aligned with their values, while still receiving high-quality, evidence-based care.
Solution Focused Brief Treatment
I incorporate a solutions-focused approach in my therapy practice by helping clients identify their strengths, clarify their goals, and focus on practical steps toward meaningful change. Rather than remaining solely focused on problems, I guide clients in recognizing what is already working in their lives and how they can build on those successes. This approach emphasizes forward movement, encouraging clients to develop clear, achievable goals and to take small, intentional steps that lead to measurable progress and increased confidence. When appropriate, I also integrate this approach with a values-based and faith-informed perspective. For clients who hold Christian beliefs, this may include exploring how their faith can support hope, resilience, and a sense of direction, while reinforcing the idea that growth is possible even in difficult circumstances. By combining a solutions-focused framework with a supportive and structured process, I aim to help clients feel empowered, capable, and equipped with practical tools they can apply in their daily lives.

Dr. Paul has been outstanding — warm, attentive, and genuinely supportive. He creates a safe, comfortable space and offer insights that are both compassionate and useful. Even in a short time, I’ve noticed real improvements and feel truly understood and encouraged. Highly recommended.

Our session was good. There were some important things that he noted which I absolutely need work on, and there were also things that I felt we didn’t address much which I thought needed to be addressed more. Overall the session was a good experience and his advice will prove to be a helpful reminder of the things I need to stick to in order to improve. I wanted to schedule a follow up appointment but, unfortunately, his schedule and mine don’t seem to coincide well.
