Patty Chao
Hello, and thank you for taking the time to learn more about me. Whether you’re new to therapy or returning to it, finding the right therapist can feel like a daunting task. My goal is to provide a supportive, nonjudgmental space where you can feel understood, respected and heard. I’m a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in New Jersey and a Licensed Master Social Worker in New York, with a Master’s degree from Fordham University and nearly a decade of experience in mental health care. I work with adults facing challenges like depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, grief, and life transitions. Using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), I help clients better understand how their thoughts and behaviors impact their emotions. I will meet you where you are without judgement and together we can work together on your journey to greater clarity, peace of mind, self-understanding and wellness.
First session
Our first session will be an opportunity to get to know one another. We will discuss your reasons for seeking therapy at this time, any prior experiences with therapy, your expectations and you can share your story. We will discuss how I may best be of help to you. This will give me the information I need to create an effective treatment plan to meet your goals. Most importantly, this introduction allows you time to decide if I am the therapist that you would like to accompany you on your path to wellness.
Strengths
One of my greatest strengths as a provider is my ability to create a safe, empathetic space where clients feel heard, respected, and supported. I’m a thoughtful listener with a genuine interest in understanding each person’s unique story and experiences. I believe in the power of a strong, trusting therapeutic relationship—it’s the foundation for meaningful and lasting change. Rather than being overly directive, my approach is collaborative. I aim to offer guidance, introduce new perspectives, and share practical strategies that empower clients to make the changes they seek.
Ideal clients
I specialize in supporting adults navigating challenges such as depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, grief and caregiver stress, major life transitions, and issues related to aging. I also have experience working with adults on the autism spectrum and am certified as a Dementia Care Provider. Whether you're seeking therapy to better understand yourself, cope with a difficult chapter of life, or improve your emotional well-being, I’m here to offer compassionate, individualized support.
Treatment methods
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
Facing life's challenges can often feel exhausting and overwhelming at times, but you don’t have to face them alone! My role is to support you in identifying the obstacles to wellness in your life and developing personalized strategies to move forward. Together, we will create a safe and supportive environment where you can feel comfortable sharing your thoughts and feelings. I primarily use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help you gain insight into the connection between your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors—because we can't change what we don't understand. I also incorporate elements of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), tailoring my approach to meet your unique needs. Building a strong therapeutic relationship is key to meaningful change. My empathetic and attentive listening, combined with practical learning activities, will help you discover the tools that work best for you. No matter where you are in your journey, I’m here to walk alongside you as you work toward healing, growth, and wellness.
