Dr. Zafar is a US educated, trained, and double board certified psychiatrist. Prior to pursuing medicine, he had a successful career in engineering, helping build complicated implantable defibrillators, pacemakers, and deep brain stimulators. Dr. Zafar believes that prescription of medications without an adequate understanding of the brain, often results in frustration and worsening of mental health. His approach to Psychiatry encompasses understanding your mental health and gaining insight into how your brain developed, and currently functions to define who you are as a child, sibling, partner, spouse, parent, grandparent. He understands the importance of your mental health is and its effects on your daily life and your loved ones.
The initial session (or more) will be spent understanding you, your journey, and where you would like to see yourself in the coming years. PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING: 1. WE DO NOT FILL OUT FMLA/SDI/ESA PAPERWORK DUE TO THE POTENTIAL FOR CONFLICT OF INTEREST. 2. UNLESS DR. ZAFAR DECIDES OTHERWISE, WE TEST FOR ADHD BEFORE PRESCRIBING ANY STIMULANT MEDICATION.

Psychodynamic
In the true Freudian tradition, I develop a psychodynamic understanding of my patients over their medication management sessions. I use this understanding to optimize my brief office-visit talk-therapy and facilitate a therapeutic relationship.

After some poor experiences with other doctors in telehealth, Dr. Zafar was a welcome change. He treated me with warmth and had a curiosity to help and ability to explain.
