Tara Metcalf-Gonzales
I am an empathetic creative arts mental health counselor, with experience in high need areas, particularly in working with children/adolescents and the important adults in their lives. I utilize a trauma-informed flexible model in individual, dyadic, and family sessions. Although I am completely comfortable with a "talk only" approach to therapy, I also value and gently offer options from exercises in theatre, dance/movement, mindfulness practices, and diverse ability-informed exercises. My primary experience has been working with youth and their families with anxiety, depression, and challenges related to life transitions. However, across the spectrum of clinical work, my focus has always been on post-traumatic growth and healing. Trauma, particularly in our early lives, is a deeply shifting experience and continues to impact our lives in many complex ways. Through an attachment lens, I want to support clients in co-regulating the ways these experiences might still live in the body and present current-day challenges, acknowledging their own resilience, and finding personal growth after these events. For the last few years, I have worked primarily with families who have experienced extremely challenging life events. I believe it is incredibly difficult to raise humans in even the most ideal circumstances and am passionate about supporting caregivers in the process. I provide counseling to all types of families.
First session
During our first session, we will focus on getting to know each other and discussing generally what brings you to treatment. You do not need to know all your goals and be ready to share everything right away. I do not expect you to immediately open up about everything you will eventually want to share, if you do not feel ready. I am comfortable moving at a slow pace and generally do long-term work with clients. We will go over consents, legal requirements, and you will get opportunities to ask any questions you may have.
Strengths
I have performed specialized work with parents, teachers, and healthcare providers experiencing burnout. Support of your capacity to relate to yourself and those you care about is central to my work. I have a strong amount of experience and working knowledge of child development and early childhood adverse experiences, particularly among the 0-5 range. I believe I am a good fit as a therapist for clients who are feeling stuck, burnt out, and overwhelmed for various reasons and are interested in trying something different in order to move toward how they would like to feel and relate to themselves and others.
Ideal clients
Clients who typically find they are a good fit with me, are clients who are looking for a long-term clinician, who moves at their pace. Anyone who is hoping for a space to process what has happened, but not always verbally, would likely find us to be a good match. Dyads (caregivers and youth) who want to foster and grow their relationship, or caregiver who would like support navigating and explaining difficult circumstances to very young children, also would be very much within my experience.
