Colleen Perseo
Hi there! I'm a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) currently providing virtual therapy. I received my Masters from Rutgers University and have been practicing for 6 years, with experience in various levels of care, including inpatient hospitalization and intensive outpatient (IOP).
Having worked with adolescents and adults in crisis, I'm equipped to offer support and guidance as clients figure out how to move forward in their lives.
My focus is working with adolescents and adults to manage their stressors and find healthy coping skills to improve their quality of life.
First session
In our first session together, we'll start with brief introductions, then discuss your current symptoms and challenges. We will review objectives for your treatment and create a safety plan in case of a crisis.
Strengths
Having worked with adolescents and adults in crisis, I'm equipped to offer support and guidance as clients figure out how to move forward in their lives. Using a trauma-informed and strength-based perspective, I cheer my clients on to become their best selves.
Ideal clients
Most of my clients have recently been in crisis, and have often been discharged from a higher level of care. My clients are motivated for change but aren't sure how to get there. They may feel anxious about the future, regret about the past, and an uncertainty about how to live in the present. Many of them feel like they are walking a path in the fog - my role is to remind them to take the next step.
Treatment methods
Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a type of psychotherapy that helps people change their thoughts and behaviors to manage mental health issues. CBT is based on the idea that thoughts and feelings influence behaviors, and that changing these can help people respond to challenging situations more effectively. We'll work on reframing thoughts, recognizing cognitive distortions, and using coping skills to manage stressors.
Dialectical Behavior (DBT)
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) is a type of psychotherapy that focuses on teaching individuals skills to manage intense emotions, improve interpersonal relationships, tolerate distress, and change unhelpful behaviors, using techniques such as mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness. We'll work on skills that can help decrease emotional dysregulation.
Trauma-Informed Care
Trauma-informed care (TIC) is a process that involves recognizing and responding to the effects of trauma on individuals, groups, and communities. It's based on the understanding that trauma can impact a person's neurological, biological, psychological, and social development. By identifying the impacts of trauma, we'll focus on being able to reclaim your own story.
Strength-Based
Strengths-based therapy is a therapeutic approach that focuses on identifying and utilizing an individual's inherent strengths and positive qualities to address challenges and promote personal growth, rather than primarily focusing on their weaknesses or problems. We'll explore how your existing strengths can help you overcome obstacles and achieve positive change in your life.
Structural Family Therapy
Structural family therapy is a type of psychotherapy that focuses on understanding and modifying the underlying structure of a family system by actively engaging with the family to improve communication and interactions between members, with the goal of resolving dysfunctional patterns and creating healthier family dynamics. We'll explore communication patterns, boundaries, and roles within the family to increase positive functioning.
