I am also a licensed Military Family Life Counselor with previous counseling to current and former military and their families. I have many successfully treated clients.

Starting therapy can feel intimidating, especially when you’ve been carrying a lot on your own for a long time. I believe therapy works best when you don’t have to pretend you’re okay or have everything figured out. Together, we create a space where you can show up honestly, make sense of your experiences, and explore meaningful change at a pace that feels grounded and supportive. My approach is collaborative, trauma-informed, and tailored to your individual needs rather than a one-size-fits-all process.
Hi and thank you for your time to read about my background.
📘 Introduction
I have been providing mental health services as a psychotherapist and disaster mental health specialist for my entire adult life. Relationships with professors led to my first becoming a therapist as a twenty-one-year-old undergraduate student majoring in Community Service at University of Oregon. The majority of my career was working 23 years for the National Center for PTSD. Over the course of these years, I responded to a dozen Presidentially declared catastrophic events. Additionally, I created a therapy integrating cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and meditation endorsed by a leading 20th century cognitive therapy psychologist who assisted the work being published in an international clinical journal dedicated to CBT. Retired from the federal government in 2013. Worked in Ukraine in 2014 and 2018 providing services to veterans and civilians in addition to teaching at universities in Kyiv, Lviv, and Rivine, and training Ukrainian mental health professionals throughout the country Provided pro bono remote clinical supervision for six years to Ukrainian psychologists. Reaching out for help can be a very vulnerable experience, but also a great attribute of strength and resilience. I work with individuals who have experienced trauma in their life. Whether it's from childhood neglect, sexual assault, natural disaster, sudden death or other life circumstances. Trauma often creates patterns and loops that extend into many areas of a person's life, and can be challenging and painful to navigate. Sometimes the way people survive their trauma brings them more pain, adds to the chaos, and reinforces negative beliefs that perpetuate the cycle. I work to empower clients to understand and alter unhealthy cycles to strengthen and better their lives.
I am fluent in ASL American Sign Language and have worked with Deaf clients leaving domestic violence in both a shelter and outpatient therapy services. I have spent 2 years in correctional settings working with severely mentally ill patients and supporting their family members navigating having children with mental illness. I have also spent 2 years working with foster youth and foster parents in providing support to their placements, promoting healing and preserving relationships.
Note that online scheduling is limited. Broader scheduling options will be available to regularly scheduling clients. Please also note that I do not provide opinions about disability or fitness to return to work or other activities for clients who are not well-established at the time that the request for such opinion is made.
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Texas with five years of independent clinical experience and over ten years of experience in human services, case management, vocational rehabilitation services, and working at inpatient and outpatient clinical therapy offices.
I have a Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision from Ohio University, a masters degree in Clinical Rehabilitation and Mental Health counseling from UNC-Chapel Hill, and a bachelors of science degree in psychology from North Carolina State University.
I chose to get a PhD in counseling because of my desire to help others, and my continuous drive to learn and grow. Therapy was essential to me as a teenager, then as a young adult, and now as a middle-aged adult. I have always found it to be a powerful tool in allowing me to process my thoughts and feelings, both about my past and my future. As a result, I chose to become a therapist, to provide the same support and guidance to the people I work with!

Hi, I’m LaCortney—Licensed Clinical Social Worker in California, Hawaii, and Alabama. I specialize in supporting adults navigating anxiety, depression, and stress, helping you build motivation and confidence to create meaningful change. Using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and a strengths-based approach, I’ll guide you in understanding your triggers, reframing limiting beliefs, and developing practical coping skills.
Through Maddox Motivations LLC, I offer a supportive space where you can explore your story, gain self-awareness, and grow into the version of yourself you’re ready to become.
I was born in Managua, Nicaragua but moved to the United States at a young age. I can say that I’ve learned to appreciate, value, and grow from every experience given in life. Good or bad experiences can potentially shape who we are. They can impact our view and perspective about life, and make us stronger to overcome challenges we face throughout our journey or disable us temporarily, making the journey less enjoyable and pleasing.
I always had a strong desire to help others. I found in Psychology and Therapy a good option to provide others the needed tools to move forward, so they can find within them the strength to push toward a better and more productive lifestyle. I view therapy as a safe place to explore relationships, whether those relationships are with people (family, co-workers, partner) or things (food, money, alcohol). I also feel an important part of therapy is addressing the social, economic, and cultural influences on a person.
I am looking forward to working with you using my 20+ years of experience working in county outpatient, state/federal prisons, highest level of foster care, and with homeless individuals. Mostly, I have experience working with complex PTSD and am passionate about assisting in developing a sense of wellbeing and making the experience worth it. I have recently been certified in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy and enjoy introducing it to you. If you already know or are now just hearing about EMDR, it is a fascinating type of therapy.
