I'm Tanner Furgeson, and I believe that therapy is most effective when it feels like a genuine, collaborative relationship. My approach is client-centered, which means I want to understand your experiences, relationships, and what is most important to you. I see my role as walking with you as we explore what may be getting in the way of the changes you want to make. I hope to create a space where you can feel heard, respected, and comfortable being yourself.

First session

The first session in therapy can be a little intimidating. Our first session will be a time for us to get to know each other a little better and talk about what brought you here. From there, we can explore what you are hoping to get out of therapy and make a plan for how we can get there. My hope is that you will leave feeling excited to begin therapy and hopeful that we can work together to get where you want to go. I can answer any questions or concerns you may have, and we will be ready to get started!

Strengths

One of my strengths is my ability to build connections and rapport with the people I work with. I really try to create a welcoming and nonjudgmental space where clients can open up about what they are experiencing. Through my work with different individuals and couples, as well as at a TK–12 school, I have seen how important it is to meet someone where they are and not use a "one-size-fits-all" approach. I believe that connecting with you will provide an important foundation for growth.

Ideal clients

I work with people who want to work together to figure out how they can improve their life. Maybe they have not felt like themselves lately, have been stuck in a rut, are making important life decisions, or are going through a hard time. They have a desire to change something and want a some help with it. They may also be anxious and have a hard time navigating life's challenges, or feel depressed and lack the energy to engage with the world around them. They would be looking for a therapist that will connect with them authentically and walk with them through whatever they may be going through.

Treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

Our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are all connected and can influence one another. In therapy, we can work together to understand these connections and identify areas where making a change may help. We might explore a situation you are experiencing, what you were thinking and feeling, and how you responded. From there, we can look for patterns and explore different ways of thinking or responding that may better support the changes you want to make.

Person-centered (Rogerian)

Everyone is unique, and I want to hear about you, your story, and what you hope to accomplish. Rather than trying to fit you into a predetermined mold, I want to work together with you to get where you want to go. I believe that you know yourself better than I do, and I will meet you where you are in life and walk alongside you as we figure it out together.

Acceptance and commitment (ACT)

This is our first time through life, and we are guaranteed to make mistakes. This does not mean you are broken; it means you are human! By utilizing Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, we can work together to notice how thoughts and feelings come and go. By being mindful of these experiences, we can work toward being less judgmental of ourselves and focus on what truly matters to you.

Solution Focused Brief Treatment

Sometimes we want practical solutions and ideas for the issues we are facing. Solution-Focused Brief Therapy is an approach where we explore what you want your life or situation to look like and then work together to figure out how you can move in that direction. You are the expert on your life, and I can work with you to create a plan that fits your unique needs and goals. There is no one-size-fits-all solution (I wish there was!), but together we can identify what is already working, build on your strengths, and find steps that can help you get where you want to go.
