Welcome! I'm Lanelle P. Laws, LMFT. For over 15 years, I've had the privilege of helping people overcome challenges related to trauma, incarceration, depression, anxiety, and LGBTQ+ identity. My passion is empowering individuals to build their self-esteem and thrive. I offer an environment that is non-judgmental, comfortable, and encouraging but from a BIPOC approach. I'm a unique therapist because my lived experience gives me relatability that others do not have. I have dedicated my life to breaking generational traumas that have plagued most underserved communities and I aim to bring voices to marginalized populations that have been misrepresented. I always say, "I'm not your average therapist!" I don't say this because I'm better...I say this because my approach has been elevated to attract individuals that have fallen through the cracks due to unhealthy relationships with therapy. I know what it's like to need help and not be able to find it...let me "Change Ur Narrative".
From the first session, you can expect to experience a warm, understanding, and genuinely supportive therapeutic relationship. This initial meeting will build a strong foundation for future growth and healing.
My approach to therapy centers on creating a safe and comfortable space where clients feel truly seen and heard. I believe this begins with being a knowledgeable and culturally empathetic listener, adept at communicating clearly and adapting my approach to meet individual needs. My emotional intelligence and self-awareness allow me to build trust and rapport, fostering a collaborative and flexible therapeutic environment. I am committed to ethical practice and believe that therapy should be a conversation – an opportunity for shared learning and growth as we process life's challenges together. Ultimately, my goal is to empower individuals to cultivate self-love, self-acceptance, and a compassionate understanding that it’s okay not to be okay.
I am best positioned to serve clients who identify with one or more of the following communities: the BIPOC community, women, and LGBTQIA+ individuals, particularly those navigating the challenges of re-entry after incarceration. My expertise lies in understanding and addressing the unique systemic, cultural, and individual barriers these groups face within the mental health system. This includes providing culturally sensitive and trauma-informed care that acknowledges the impact of historical oppression and ongoing marginalization on mental well-being. My therapeutic approach is tailored to empower these clients to build resilience, self-esteem, and a strong sense of agency in their lives. I aim to create a safe and validating space for healing and growth, where their lived experiences are fully honored and respected.
