Are you ready to get out of the valley and step over those mountains to reach your defined success and goals? Are you ready to put in the work so you can press through those situations, obstacles, emotions, behaviors or past experiences that have been a barrier to reaching your destiny? If so, I would love to do life with you to help you restore what has been lost. My name is Arriba Walker, and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor with over 25 years of experience working as a Master’s level Community Counselor. I am deeply committed to serving individuals from underserved populations who face barriers to accessing mental health care, and I am passionate about helping reduce the stigma surrounding mental health treatment. I also have a strong passion for empowering clients and supporting them through critical stages of growth and healing. My clinical work is grounded in evidence-based practices and shaped by years of experience supporting individuals with complex emotional, traumatic and life challenges. I specialize in trauma-focused treatment using a Trauma-Informed Care approach. I work with individuals experiencing symptoms of depression, anxiety, grief, loss, dissociation, and other emotional difficulties that often stem from traumatic experiences, particularly childhood trauma. The therapeutic goal is not to remain a victim of your trauma, but to become the creator of your destiny, regardless of your past circumstances. As a practitioner guided by Christian principles, I offer faith-based counseling for clients who wish to integrate their identified spiritual practice into the therapeutic process. When aligned with the client’s clinical goals, the treatment plan may incorporate spiritual reflection, prayer, and the application of faith principles alongside evidence-based clinical interventions. This integrative approach is strictly client-led, ensuring that faith-based elements are provided in a manner that is consistently respectful, supportive, and nonjudgmental.

In our first session together, here's what you can expect

I know that the first step can feel a little intimidating, so I want you to know exactly what to expect when we meet for our initial session or consultation. Our first session is a relaxed, no-pressure space where we will: 1) I will briefly share my background and therapeutic approach, 2) you will have the opportunity to share your background, concerns, and what brings you to therapy, 3) Time will be set aside to answer any questions you may have, 4) I will explain what the therapeutic process may look like moving forward, and 5) We will complete the intake process and begin identifying initial treatment goals. Most importantly, the first session is also your opportunity to determine whether I am the right therapist for you. Finding the right fit is an essential part of effective therapy, and I fully support clients in making the choice that best meets their needs.

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

My main area of focus is working with youth, young adults and women. I experienced challenges as a youth and have always had the passion to find a way to give back to this particular generation to provide preventative strategies to decrease involvement in at-risk behaviors, improve building relationships, healthily manage social interactions, improve decision-making, and maintain their physical and emotional safety. Since I experienced challenges as a young girl who was at-risk of going down the wrong path within my community, I also have the desire to help women process any of their traumatic childhood experiences, change their perspectives, and use their experiences to improve the quality of their lives.

The clients I'm best positioned to serve

My target populations are youth ages 9 to 18 (adolescence) and young adults ages 18 to 25. I will also work with adults up to age 50. My core areas are teens and young adults. I am very skilled at addressing trauma (sexual abuse, emotional abuse, mental, etc), depression, anxiety, self esteem, goal setting, safety planning, etc. My niche or ministry is working with adolescent girls and young women, but I will work with boys/men depending on what needs to be addressed.

My treatment methods

Trauma-Focused CBT

I am certified in TF-CBT which is an evidence-based treatment to address youth (ages 3-18 years) posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and related difficulties. It is a components- and phase- based treatment that therapists provide individually and in parallel to youth and their parents or primary caregivers, with additional conjoint child-parent sessions. TF-CBT has strong evidence of improving children’s PTSD and related difficulties in 8-25 sessions, for children of different genders, races, ethnicities, and who have experienced diverse types of traumas. For adults, it is an evidence-based, structured, and short-term approach designed to process traumatic memories and reduce PTSD symptoms. The therapy promotes skill-building for emotional regulation and safety, helping individuals reframe their trauma and develop healthy coping mechanisms. The key components are psychoeducation, relaxation techniques, cognitive restructuring, trauma narrative and processing, exposure therapy and safety planning.

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

The strategies of focus include: learning to recognize one’s distortions in thinking that are creating problems, and then to reevaluate them in light of reality; Gaining a better understanding of the behavior, core beliefs (self, others, the world) and motivation of others; Using problem-solving skills to cope with difficult situations; and Learning to develop a greater sense of confidence in one’s own abilities.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT)

DBT is based on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), but it’s specially adapted for people who experience emotions very intensely. It is a structured, evidence-based psychotherapy designed to manage intense emotions, reduce self-destructive behaviors, and improve relationships by balancing validation (acceptance) with change. Four sets of skills are practiced: Mindfulness, Emotion Regulation, Distress Tolerance and Interpersonal Effectiveness.

Acceptance and commitment (ACT)

ACT is action oriented and rather than trying to eliminate or avoid difficult thoughts and feelings, ACT teaches individuals to accept them, detach from them, and commit to actions that align with their core values. I focus on acceptance, values, committed actions, being present, addressing thoughts. With this model, I address self esteem, self worth, self care, and 8 dimensions of wellness (Spiritual, environmental, physical, intellectual, emotional, occupational, social, and financial)

Trauma Informed Care

I operate according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration (SAMHSA) framework of trauma informed care which involves 6 principles: Safety, Trustworthiness and Transparency, Peer Support, Collaboration and Mutuality, Empowerment, Voice and Choice, and Cultural, Historical and Gender Issues.
