Honesty, integrity, insight, awareness, knowledge, relief and resolutions are what you'll get with me. I believe the theraputic process is organic and our sessions will unfold overtime, focusing on getting you to a place where you can think clearly, understand yourself better and feel solid. I am an out of the box thinker and doer with full acceptance for all lifes wonders. Differences are appealing and I welcome them with open arms, encouraging you to be your absolute self %100 of the time. If you need a jump start, help figuring out what makes you tick, what makes you happy, what your authentic self needs to thrive, I'd love to work with you. Life throws curve balls that can be annoying, frustrating, shocking at times. I get it because I've been there. It's ok and healthy to ask for help. My specialties include insight oriented talk therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, solution focused and strategic therapy. My history is working with adults who have depression and anxiety, relationship distress, anger management issues, trauma histories, existential crisis and have co-occurring disorders which require medication treatment. I work with couples who seek help communicating and bringing the love back into their relationship. I provide psycho-education and real life solutions to problems that seem unsolvable at face value, but with that one tweak, you find out they were solvable all along. I fully believe in the connection between body and mind and weave differing modalities into therapy in order to address each component of healing and wellness. Often we don't realize that just one simple tweak can launch you into the lifetime you want. Are you struggling with personal challenges affecting your relationships, work, social life and, most importantly, yourself. Do you miss that hope, that loving feeling for your partner or your kids? Complex, yet common, issues around love, family, purpose in life, and doing what truly makes you happy, have become overwhelming and you’re ready to do something different. Are you feeling underwhelmed? You may have recently undergone a loss, job change, life change, a psychiatric or medical emergency, and are feeling completely stuck. I believe your truth is in you, and my role of therapist is to provide emotional support, insight, and to help you navigate through past and present so you can have the future you deserve.

Hello, my name is Derek Nunn and I am a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor in the state of California. My approach to our collaboration is a solution-focused therapeutic approach revolving around you being the expert with your desired outcomes and my use of specific questions to help identify and amplify strengths, skills, and resources moving you in the direction of your preferred future. Each session is driven by you as we will address your best hopes for each conversation to encourage a respectful collaboration between the two of us. We will also explore increasing psychological flexibility utilizing skills from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). I have worked with diverse populations in varying settings and programs such as schools, community mental health programs, crisis intervention team programs, and outpatient settings providing individual and group services to clients ages 8-75 both face-to-face and on telehealth platforms. Currently, I have availability to work with individuals ages 18 and older through telehealth only. After working in the fire service for 14 years and recognizing the need to bridge the gap between public safety and mental health services, I transitioned into the mental health field in 2014 and discovered passion for helping people of various ages and health needs. Therapeutically, I have gravitated towards solution-focused therapy blended with acceptance and commitment therapeutic work, mainly because of the drive I have to maintain hope for others, engrained in me from my fire service career. If you are looking for court mandated counseling, seeking letters for emotional support animals, work disability, custody, or other court related services, I do not provide those services, and refer individuals to other providers having those services as their specialties. I am looking forward to working with you to build solutions towards your preferred future.

It has been a challenging two years. COVID came into our lives and changed the way we lived and worked. Many of us spent possibly a year or two in partial isolation, seeing only our closes friends and family members. Now, it is 2024 and we are wanting to get our old style lives back, but this transition has been difficult to accomplish. Anxiety, both social and life skill focused, along with depression, loss of self confidence or self esteem and not knowing where to begin. Many of us have anger over loss time, along with feelings or irritation at ourselves and others about how to go about putting the peices together which was once our true idenitity. Now, as you look in the mirroe, you want to begin to be the brave person you once were. You want to be social, travel and feel the joy again that life used to offer. My work and yours also, is to help you find your confidence to begin your post COVID life. COVID amy be here to stay, but as long as all the necessary precautions are taken, I understand two years is time enough to lose.

Do you struggle with people-pleasing, anxiety, depression, internalized and/or externalized anger, or managing emotions in general in a healthy manner? Did you experience childhood trauma and feel like you grew up too fast? Were you labeled "different," "the "caretaker," "black sheep," or "troublemaker"? I teach people how to prioritize and honor all parts of themselves, not just the "desirable" ones. We will work through parts people generally dismiss and ignore such as anger, resentment, shame, and disgust, and learn how to embrace them gracefully. I'll teach you the skills to feel more at peace. As your therapist, I will be challenging and direct, yet empathetic and compassionate. I will challenge you through introspective questioning that will lead you to your own answers. I help you take what you've learned and apply it to your own life by giving you things to think about and work on between sessions, along with resources and handouts to remember. I hope you'll witness yourself feeling more empowered, confident, and more at peace with yourself as my other clients have. You will notice your relationships evolve and change, which can be scary! Rest assured, you will be provided with skills to gracefully go through them. Everything you seek is already inside you. All I’m doing is helping you remember.

At times, life presents us with challenges that are too difficult to face alone. While some people turn to family and friends for support, others may find themselves without anyone. The fear of judgment and understanding can prevent many from obtaining the support they need. My passion for therapy lies in the opportunity to work with a diverse range of individuals and learn about their unique experiences. Each person's story is different, and being able to support them through their journey is incredibly rewarding. I appreciate the chance to witness their growth and resilience as they navigate their challenges. While each approach is tailored to the individual, I utilize a blend of therapeutic techniques that include inner child work, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), and supportive therapy. Together, we explore how past experiences shape the present and develop strategies to navigate life’s challenges. I’m here to offer a judgment-free zone where you can express yourself openly. My aim is to provide a space where your thoughts and feelings can be acknowledged and reflected upon. Together, we can explore insights that may not be apparent to you on your own. Let’s work together to find the best path forward for your situation.

I have worked in private practice and the school systems providing Educationally Related Mental Health Services (ERMHS) for almost 25 years. During this time I founded a small business where my team and I provide these mental health services individually and in groups on-site to school districts all over Sonoma County, CA. I love working with children k-12 and their families. I have worked in non-public schools, public schools, and privately with at-risk youth and their families. This has been my passion my whole career. I have been married to my lovely wife for 18 years, together for 24 years and we have two beautiful children. Our son is 13 and our daughter is 10. I enjoy all things outdoors. I surfed competitively in my youth and I love mountain biking, snowboarding and anything that has to do with water, but my main love is spending time with my family.

I understand that making the decision to start therapy can feel overwhelming and intimidating. Whether you're struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma or everyday life struggles; we can work together to help you reach your highest potential. I know we can feel stuck, our minds constantly overthinking, which leaves us feeling emotionally exhausted. I aim to help adults on this journey called life by learning coping skills, changing negative thinking patterns, and improve self-esteem. I believe in using a whole-self approach, finding the connection between the mind, body, and spirit. I focus on creating a safe space for you to truly heal, grow, and build insight. Through compassion, reflection, and evidence-based strategies, I will walk along side you every step of the way.

Frequently asked questions

Why filter by California rather than a city like LA?

When looking for online therapy, you can see anyone that is credentialed in the state. We want you to find the best fit, therefore, Grow Therapy shows available therapists across California from San Francisco to San Diego! If you’d rather see someone in-person, you can change the filter from virtual and find a therapist near you in California.

Will my therapist take Oxford?

Yes! If you use Oxford you’ll be asked to verify your Member ID at the time you book the appointment. However, if you don’t have Oxford you can select cash. Our therapists will have their cost of appointment on their profile. Individual session costs will vary.

How does the Specialty Filter work? Can I find a therapist that focuses on a specific issue?

The specialty filter is optional. You don’t need to check any boxes to see a provider. However, fit is very important when selecting an online therapist. If you have knowledge or experience to recognize what specialties you may need.

What are the "Clients say I'm" badges?

Grow Therapy asks patients about their experience with therapists after they have had a certain number of sessions. After enough responses, we add those characteristics to their profiles to help you find the best online therapists for you. We're still working on collecting this information from all our therapists.

Why use Gender, Age, and Identities filters?

Finding a provider with a similar life experience can be beneficial because it can be easier to establish rapport and potentially be understood quicker and clearer.

What to expect during your first session?

Your first therapy session is for you and your therapist to meet each other and to ask any questions that you have about the counseling process. This is where you can expect your therapist to do the same as they will ask questions to gain insight into your specific situation. In this first session the therapist is doing their part to gather as much information so they can better assess if they are able to meet your therapeutic needs.

Depending upon your provider's specialty, you may also discuss the methods the therapist will use. For additional information on therapy methods, please visit the Grow Therapy Help Center. Some people feel nervous before their first appointment, and that is totally normal! Coming prepared with a list of questions for your therapist may help. Remember, you're taking a brave step by seeking therapy, and it is okay to be nervous as you try something new.
