Hi! I'm a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I received my Masters from the University West Florida and have been practicing for 14 years. I have served individuals in an outpatient and residential setting. I prefer to provide services in an outpatient setting as it allows me the opportunity to observe the growth of my patients over time. I help adults struggling with depression, anxiety, and other challenges to live the life they deserve.

Are there things in your life that you want to change to be happier, feel better about yourself, come to terms with things from the past, or have better relationships with others? If you do, I believe that counseling can help you achieve the kind of life you want to have. I'm a clinical psychologist specializing in treatment of post traumatic stress, anxiety, and depression. I have over 20 years of experience as a therapist and I am trained in multiple types of therapies. I'm originally from Oregon, but I have spent most of my adult life in Texas and a few years overseas in Asia and Europe. In addition to private practice, I have been a military psychologist, Veterans Affairs psychologist, PTSD clinic director, Psycho-Social Rehabilitation clinic director, and adjunct clinical assistant professor at UT Health medical school, as well as participating in major research projects in treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder. I believe that therapy is a science as well as an art, and I have found that my knowledge of clinical research can greatly improve the results of counseling. I have found that counseling can be very effective at helping people make the kinds of changes that they desire in their lives, help them to have a healthier sense of self, more satisfying relationships with others, and a better quality of life. I'm confident that you can meet your goals with a bit of work and the right treatment plan.

I am a licensed Professional Counselor in the states of Georgia and Alabama. My focus areas of practice are anxiety, depression, identity development, academic and career stress, relationship social skills, trauma, and resilience building. My therapeutic approach is strengths-based educational counseling. My approach to therapy is the holistic integrative counseling approach that combines evidence-based practices with a focus on the interconnectedness of mind, body, and spirit. It draws from multiple therapeutic frameworks, including cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), person-centered therapy, and mindfulness-based practices, to create a personalized and flexible approach tailored to each client's needs. My client's focus in counseling is on adolescents and young adults, with a strong emphasis on helping them achieve academic success, develop leadership skills, build resilience, and foster personal growth. My communication style is empathetic and supportive by building trust through active listening, validating emotions, and creating a safe, non-judgmental space. I was attempting a career as a therapist because my mother was a school counselor, and I saw the effect that she had on her students. I wanted to do the same thing in my community. What drove me to this work is being able to see people doing better. My approach to goal setting with clients is by using a SMART goals framework. Use the SMART criteria (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-Bound to help clients set clear and actionable goals.

Sometimes people experience emotional problems (e.g., anxiety, depression), behavioral problems (e.g., overeating, smoking), or relationship problems (e.g., excessive arguing, poor communication) that interfere with their daily functioning. These difficulties result from the interaction of biological, learning, behavioral, and environmental factors, which influence patterns of thinking and behaving. Negative life events can contribute to the development of self-defeating patterns of thinking and behaving, which some people can have difficulty changing. In my work, which I have been practicing for 40 years, I help people identify these self-defeating patterns and develop strategies for dealing with them. I emphasize the importance of practicing these strategies consistently, with the goal of handling emotions more effectively and behaving in more responsible and healthy ways. I focus on life pattern changes with respect to relationships, depression, anxiety, anger control, impulse control, and stress management.

My name is Bill Massey and I am a licensed clinical social worker practicing in west central Georgia and east central Alabama. I graduated from the University of Georgia's MSW program in 1993 and became an LCSW in 1996. I have worked in home health and hospice for most of my career with a strong emphasis on geriatrics and dementia care. I have experience in inpatient psychiatric settings and residential services as well. I am looking to fill a niche that I have seen wanting attention for some time. For many years I have seen elders and their families in their homes but had to refer out any counseling other than crisis intervention to outpatient therapists. The problem is that I have been referring homebound people for outpatient therapy. This is not effective for many reasons. With the help of Grow Therapy, I intend to offer my services of counseling and case management to people in the comfort of their own homes. I will become a mobile mental health provider to serve a population that has gone largely underserved for all too long. My coverage area for in-home therapy will be Lee, Russell, and Chambers counties in Alabama as well as Muscogee, Chattahoochee, and Harris Counties in Georgia. I am opening up limited appointment times for virtual counseling as of mid May 2024.

Frequently asked questions

Why filter by Alabama rather than a city like Huntsville?

When looking for online therapy, you can see anyone that is credentialed in the state. We want you to find the best fit, therefore, Grow Therapy shows available therapists across Alabama from Montgomery to Birmingham! If you’d rather see someone in-person, you can change the filter from virtual and find a therapist near you in Alabama.

Will my therapist take insurance?

When booking you’ll be asked to verify with your Member ID. However, if you don’t have any of the insurances available you can select cash. Our therapists will have their cost of appointment on their profile. Individual session costs will vary.

How does the Specialty Filter work? Can I find a therapist that focuses on a specific issue?

The specialty filter is optional. You don’t need to check any boxes to see a provider. However, fit is very important when selecting an online therapist. If you have knowledge or experience to recognize what specialties you may need.

What are the "Clients say I'm" badges?

Grow Therapy asks patients about their experience with therapists after they have had a certain number of sessions. After enough responses, we add those characteristics to their profiles to help you find the best online therapists for you. We're still working on collecting this information from all our therapists.

Why use Gender, Age, and Identities filters?

Finding a provider with a similar life experience can be beneficial because it can be easier to establish rapport and potentially be understood quicker and clearer.

What to expect during your first session?

Your first therapy session is for you and your therapist to meet each other and to ask any questions that you have about the counseling process. This is where you can expect your therapist to do the same as they will ask questions to gain insight into your specific situation. In this first session the therapist is doing their part to gather as much information so they can better assess if they are able to meet your therapeutic needs.

Depending upon your provider's specialty, you may also discuss the methods the therapist will use. For additional information on therapy methods, please visit the Grow Therapy Help Center. Some people feel nervous before their first appointment, and that is totally normal! Coming prepared with a list of questions for your therapist may help. Remember, you're taking a brave step by seeking therapy, and it is okay to be nervous as you try something new.
