I am a licensed clinician providing telehealth therapy services to clients residing in California, Washington state, and Oregon. I am a second generation Korean American with a former background in literacy, ESL, and English education. I have significant personal and professional experience in navigating issues such as: immigrant cultures (mainly Asian, Pacific Islanders, and Hispanic), life transitions, self esteem, self-identity, anxiety and depression, family conflicts, relationships, parenting, work or career challenges and transitions, academic and social pressures for minors and college students, spirituality, trauma or PTSD, race and gender conflicts, and grief or loss. I also assist clients with behavioral challenges, including substance use, addictions, diet and exercise for healthier lifestyles, obsessive compulsive behaviors, and other issues that might stem from past traumas. My approach is compassionate, collaborative, and solutions-oriented, helping you gain inner strength and courage to move forward in a consistent way. I am passionate about my work and grateful to be considered as a participant on your journey to wholeness.
The first session includes information gathering, a review of policies and procedures, as well as your unique treatment goals in therapy. If time permits, we will address current and/or urgent needs for why you are seeking therapy at this time. My goal for our first session is for you to have a good understanding of what treatment might look like for you, what to expect while working with me, and some strategies or tools to start with to feel better until our next session.
I have a great deal of lived experiences that definitely shapes the way I do therapy work. It has made me a naturally more reflective, compassionate, and resilient human being, all of which are strengths I bring into my therapy practice. I am able to motivate, encourage, and foster change from a collaborative, affirming, and nurturing space.
Clients that find the most benefit from sessions with me are open to self-reflection and new or alternative ways of thinking and are open to trying new ways of coping. They may be open to direct guidance and feedback and put an effort to follow the recommendations I provide or have open and direct conversations with me about things they have already tried or things they continue to have challenges with in light of recommendations I provide. Clients that work well with me generally are communicative about their needs in treatment as well as their needs in scheduling and availability.
I help clients to be more present, aware, focused, and intentional of their thoughts, beliefs, communication, and behaviors. This helps clients to feel more in control, achieve more life balance and relational harmony, and to relieve anxiety, depression, or other mental health symptoms currently being experienced.
If you have a tendency to minimize your strengths, skills, and abilities, and tend to magnify your problems, stressors, and challenges, I will call out your unique gifts, talents, abilities, and accomplishments in a way that is genuine and sincere. The goal here is for you to be able to acknowledge your own strengths and be able to nurture yourself with more compassion, acceptance, and gratitude.
I often utilize Cognitive Behavior Therapy in my sessions. I believe that a good amount of mental health challenges stem largely from our cognitions (our thoughts and thought processes) and our core beliefs, which then impacts our emotions (feelings) and behaviors (including communication and speech). If we can alter what we think and believe, we can alter our emotional experience, which can then also impact our actions or behaviors. This modality has been very helpful for many of my clients. It is certainly not the best modality for every client, but it has had great positive impact for many of my clients.
I am personally acquainted with the unique cultural experiences of the immigrant family and can relate with clients who struggle with cultural identity and assimilating values of dual cultures. Particular challenges within the Asian American experience include: perfectionism, trying to please parents’ expectations or external social world, low self esteem, valuing self from performance- or achievement-based perspectives, and dealing with excessive shame or guilt. I also appreciate the uniqueness of each person’s journey and use curiosity, a nonjudgmental space, and questions to guide my sessions with clients.
I help improve the relationship dynamic between children and their parents as well as address any other presenting mental health concerns or symptoms that affect the parent-child relationship, school or academics, peer or social relationships, and behaviors at home or in public places. Sessions can be done with parent alone (collateral counseling), with child alone (individual counseling), or with parent and child both present (family therapy). Based on client’s or family’s needs, clients may utilize a variety of different session types. Both client and parent’s needs will be addressed when identifying treatment goals for minor clients. I have limited availability for minor clients due to not being able to accommodate for after hours and weekend sessions. Please schedule a free consultation to see if my services are available.
