Hello! I am a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) in California and a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) in New York. I am also a gay, Asian/Hawaii-local male, with more than 20 years of active recovery. My entire journey into this field was inspired by getting court mandated to treatment myself when I was younger, and finding that I had a passion for helping others overcome similar issues with addiction, behavioral health issues, and legal involvement. I started as a Certified Substance Abuse Counselor in Hawaii (a credential I still maintain in both NY and CA) and worked up to a Master's degree in Counseling Psychology to round everything out. Throughout this process I have put together an extensive work history in therapeutic, addiction-related, and forensic treatment settings, including long-term, residential, dual diagnosis treatment; Drug Court; and a variety of outpatient clinics.

In our first session together, here's what you can expect

In the first session, we will introduce ourselves, explore reasons for seeking help, and dive into where to start in terms of what you expect to gain from the work we do, and what your goals might look like. It's okay if you have no idea and just need to talk it out until something takes shape, or if you already have a laundry list of things that has been building up for a while. Let's get it all on the table!

The biggest strengths that I bring into our sessions

Having worked with a variety of people from different cultures, different backgrounds, and different socioeconomic classes between cities like Honolulu, HI, New York City, NY, and Los Angeles, CA, cultural humility is something that is paramount for me. Also, being part of the LGBTQ+ community, having had my own lived-experiences in early adulthood, and then working with everything from criminal cases to severe mental illness as an adult, you can be at ease without worrying about how "bad" you look, because of the range of things I have seen personally and professionally in my life is quite wide, and I have firsthand experience working through many things myself.

The clients I'm best positioned to serve

I am great with working with individuals who feel like they have been backed into a corner by their problems, feel overwhelmed, and don't know what to do next. I also work well with individuals who struggle with change, from not knowing if change is even possible, to having difficulty following through, or even running into roadblocks trying the same thing over and over again without getting the desired results. Addictions, symptoms of a major mental disorder, and personality problems may all play at part in these struggles, and I will take the time to help you develop an integrated approach.

My treatment methods

Cognitive Behavioral (CBT)

CBT has been show to work across a wide range of treatment populations. I have used this in substance use and forensic settings, as well as with individuals and groups. Every feeling and action starts with a thought, and thoughts come from our beliefs about ourselves, others, and the world around us. If we can change things at that level, feelings and actions will follow suit.
